[Midnight Hotel] July catch-alll
Characters: Anyone, everyone.
Date: Month of JULY, 2016.
Location: The Midnight Hotel.
Situation: Catch-all post! Feel free to use this post for anything that happens within the Midnight Hotel during the month, using the subject header to label specific rooms or for specific people. See also the OOC note at the bottom.
Warnings/Rating: Mark your threads if content warnings become applicable, please!
Though the attack on Anton and Jintou occurred outside of the Hotel, its effects can nevertheless be seen on the Hotel’s runnings during July. Jintou is absent, in the first place, though Anton keeps his room in the event he’s found.
For the last few days of June and the first couple days of July Anton is preoccupied with rebuilding the shops he damaged in his attempt to stop Jintou from being taken, and therefore a good deal of the Hotel’s daily running is in the hands of his staff and a handful of trusted ex-gang kedan.
Within the first few days of the month Anton’s health takes a nosedive. Though the chronic condition discovered by Raine and Tony wasn’t previously active, the poisoning attempt apparently changed that and for the rest of this month Anton is under enforced bed-rest—or if not bed-rest then an enforced holiday. For that reason, any and all offers to help out with maintenance, cleaning, cooking, accounting and other daily chores at the Hotel will be welcomed.
Provided, that is, that no one minds the Hotel proprietor hovering over their shoulders—when he isn’t being sat on by a giant wolf to make sure he doesn’t overtax himself.
Hotel rules are, obviously, still in effect.
[ooc: The Midnight Hotel’s status page is available here, with the rules at the top and ongoing status at the bottom. PLEASE POST TO THE STATUS PAGE IF YOUR CHARACTER WOULD LIKE A ROOM, JOB OR AREA IN THE GARAGE, OR ARE MOVING OUT. Anton will manufacture means of payment until Foreigners are able to properly offer recompense or choose to move out.]

OTA
[If the music is going at that point, you'll probably find her foot tapping, enjoying the beat . . . but it's anyone's guess if you could get the blind girl to dance.]
[Hopefully between cake and music, the party will be a lift to her mood.]
no subject
Are you going to save some for the rest of us?...
[he means to be teasing, but a moment later, recognition hits him- thankfully, he's able to regain his proverbial footing before his voice betrays him.
he thinks.
not this kid]
no subject
Look, you want cake? You get there fast. Or take your chances. Those are the rules.
[And . . . there's something about that voice. Nothing anyone else would recognize. And nothing she can really put a finger on. It's not exactly known to her. But for a girl who "sees" partly with her ears? There's just something in it.]
[It itches at her brain.]
[She cleans off another finger, idle and thoughtful. Casual.] Nice party, huh?
no subject
[he should go. but - how to without making her confused as to why he'd go so quickly? he could feign some sort of offense, but...
he looks back out at the crowd, forcing a small smile on to his face]
I suppose. Especially since, after all, there's not that many of them.
no subject
[A pause, and her bouncing foot comes to rest on the earth.] I don't think we've met. I'm Toph.
no subject
[and while he does start to move away - well, there that goes. he looks back at her, arching his brow. probably best to keep some distance, even namewise...though at least now he knows hers.]
...you can call me Professor Callaghan. [after all - he is teaching again.]
no subject
[Of course, both of these things could just be his mannerisms. But Toph wouldn't have gotten nearly as far as she had without her instincts. And for a man who'd spoken first, avoidant behavior was . . . off.]
[Her eyebrows shifted upward, though, at the name -- because it was one that was even more familiar.] You know Hiro and Tadashi?
no subject
[...he would have liked to. especially once he's gotten to know him.]
...I hadn't really gotten the chance. You're friends with them?
no subject
I'm a metalbender -- I can make tools and pieces they can't do too easily.

[This goes double when the food is cake.]
[And triple if the kid in question is Mike.]
[Quiet, yet distinctive, feet pad past Toph towards the cake.]
[Stop.]
[And then backpedal.]
I didn't know you danced.
no subject
I didn't say I did.
no subject
[He stops himself. It's not worth it, arguing semantics.]
How's the cake?
no subject
[The words are purely non-committal, aimed at giving him the least amount of information with the least amount of effort as possible. Hopefully he'll get the hint.]
no subject
[This isn't small talk,...well okay, it is a little bit of small talk, but Mike is seriously wondering about the cake. He spent his first few months here trying to cobble together food from home using ingredients that were anything but. So good cake? Is something he's kind of missed.]
Look, I can see you're like all...
[His hands make a vague gesture which one could reasonably discern as busy.]
I just wanted to, you know...Well I got something for you.
no subject
[But the next statement wipes even the note that he hadn't finished his sentence out of her brain.]
For me?
[All right, that did catch her off guard. The irritation in her tone smooths to genuine surprise.]
no subject
[There's a slight rustle of cloth and leather as Mike lowers his head slightly into his shell so as to more easily remove the scabbard that's slung across his body and over one shoulder.]
Took me forever, maybe had to break a few fingers more than I'd like, but...I found it. And believe me, the Bookends would rather you keep it than me.
no subject
You found-- . . .
[Her mind flashes through possibilities, but likely he'll say it before she comes to it. She hasn't forgotten her sifu's sword -- not by a longshot. But she hasn't been able to locate it herself, and she certainly hasn't expected him to -- so much so that the possibility that he has found it doesn't immediately occur to her.]
[The idea of taking it doesn't even register.]

Re: OTA
[Iroh has cake, tea, and a musical instrument. He looks like he's enjoying himself, but that's not terribly surprising for Iroh.]
no subject
[She scoots to make room for him to sit if he wants.] Don't know too much about the rest of it. But the music's pretty good, and the cake is even better.
no subject
[he moves over to sit]
no subject
Company's good now.
[A pause. She's not sure she wants to go where she's thinking of next . . . and yet she does. Maybe even needs to. Because of all people, Iroh is one who will get it.]
[Her tone sobers, feet scuffing lightly across the ground as she hesitates.]
How are you doing . . . ? You know. Without . . .
[She doesn't say the name -- hopes he knows it without her having to say it aloud.]
no subject
[Iroh paused, considering this, turning his teacup over in his hands]
But I must say, I liked having him close by. He is good company.
[A change from the angry young man he had been. It reassured Iroh so much, but it made him miss Zuko more; he wanted to know his older, more mature, nephew and see what he'd become.]
[Also, Wan trying to impress Iroh as a potential in-law had been endearing.]
no subject
. . . Kind of big now with only two of us.
[She's quiet, holding her plate between both hands. She's not sure exactly what she wants to say . . . or how she wants to say it. But she wants to say something . . . give some kind of voice to what's churning around inside.]
How . . . do you deal with it? Him . . . gone, I mean.
no subject
[Iroh sighed]
The same way you deal with anything else. One day at a time.
[It's not a specific answer, but there's a thousand things he could say. And it's a lot of very specific things. Like reminding himself that it was just like when he worked in Ba Sing Sei and Zuko was in the Fire Nation. Just even harder to visit.]
no subject
[It lasts only for a moment.]
Zuko, Wan, Katara. Sokka. They're all gone now.
But me . . . I'm still here.
[Her lips press together, and she's quiet for a long moment. In that moment, she almost looks smaller . . . like she's pulled inward on herself.]
I don't know how to take that "one day at a time."
[It's the sort of thing she can only admit to a few people. She gives it to him without question.]
