The statues were incredibly strange. The one where he was a little kid didn't interest him as much. He'd seen baby pictures. It was kind of amusing to think of himself as cute-weird and not creepy-weird, but aside from that, he wasn't that intrigued. The one that caught his eye most was the one that looked like an adult. He knew full well he'd never be one, unless maybe he got to stay here, and it was sort of fascinating to pick out the differences between the person he would have been and the extradimensional double he had here. Scrawnier, definitely, and scruffier. He suspected the glasses were an affectation, since he had perfect vision--and could be a bit pretentious. No sleek uniform, just a labcoat and an old t-shirt and jeans.
He was a little disturbed at how fascinating he found it and turned to the last one. The idea of himself as old was so weird it didn't register as possible, and his defenses were a bit lower as a result. He absentmindedly gave in to the compulsion and tapped the statue with his tail.
He had just time to see them crumble before he was suddenly transported to another place entirely (not an unfamiliar sensation for him, except that it wasn't volitional). He was in the unused storage room his parents hid him in when the world ended, but this time he knew what was coming, that the drug his mother injected would knock him out and hide his life-signs from the scanners, that he'd be safe while he lay in the dark while every other person on the planet died, and he wrenched away as she tried.
