Event | Console Crash Chaos | Phase One
Characters: ALL!
Date: April 17-30, 2014
Location: Keeliai
Situation: In an unexpected and bold attack by Malicant, the console system is completely shut down while food and supply locations all around the city are targeted by bombings.
Warnings/Rating: Explosions! Possible descriptions of related aftermaths, injuries, death, etc.
Shortly after eight in the morning of the 17th, the consoles experience a strange glitching effect. They'll display 15-20 seconds of static, interrupting anything being done on them at the time, before going utterly dark. No power, no signal, completely offline even to detection of their normal bio-mechanical signatures. No amount of energy influx will get them going again, though taking them apart (or trying to) will still cause them to melt into goo.
Within minutes of the console shutdown, explosions will begin ripping through Keeliai. The bombs are all timed as close to simultaneous as coordinating a city-wide attack can be, with many going off within seconds of each other, throwing the thriving morning rush into chaos. They tear into businesses and across public spaces, collapsing walls and blowing piles of debris into the streets. Places of high traffic quickly become evident as prime targets: marketplaces, hospitals, schools and cafes. The streets take only moments to fill with panicking, screaming kedan trying to pull their injured fellows out of harm's way. All told, the explosions take place across approximately a 10-minute stretch and their explosive yields are fairly high.
In addition to the bombs that cause destruction through their blasts, smaller bombs are going off around the city that specifically target food and water supplies, particularly where large stocks of it were kept such as grocers, produce markets, and the like. Rather than cause mass damage, these explosions spray out a fine mist of spores. Any perishables in their immediate area that are splattered develop an oozing black mold within minutes, eventually breaking down organic substances that turn to foul smelling rot and release their own mist, perpetuating the cycle. While skin contact with the mist doesn't harm, inhaling or ingesting it will produce shakes, fever, vomiting with a cumulative effect that has the potential to be fatal. It is much slower to infect the water supply but the sheer volume of rotting perishables will eventually put enough of the spores to taint water sources, approximately 6-8 hours after the original bombings.
The police force are out as soon as possible and within the hour are helping move the injured to safer locations with Evandau in charge, right in their midst and shoulder to shoulder with his subordinates. Not being stockpiles for any of the apparent targets, many of the Foreigner residences have been left undamaged and, wary of putting them in further danger by collecting large groups in public spaces, Foreigners may even be asked to take in a few individuals or a kedan family.
Despite the number of explosions, there are far more reports of injuries as opposed to casualties. The person or persons (or That Bad Guy) responsible for this were, for this attack at least, more intent on damage than on death.

Not that he's like...now paranoid about it, or anything.

The ring rattled off statistics and vital signs. Then: "Contaminated."
Korra sighed as the ring green glow faded and she looked at the ground for a moment.
"Must have been when you helping everyone. Maybe I can heal you, I don't know how well it will work. But I can try."
no subject
But no where near as still as when the disembodied voice proclaims him to be Contaminated.
"Wait...I have the spores? They're inside of me?!"
no subject
"I'd try to see if the ring can eliminate them, but I don't trust my skill with it for that. Not yet." Still a rookie Lantern. "That means Momo might have them too."
no subject
"Try it anyway. But on me first."
He trusts you, just not with Momo.
"I know you can do it, Korra. You can do anything."
no subject
Taking an even breath, Korra gave determined look at Aang and nodded.
"Let’s do it."
Pointing her ring at him once more, a transparent green light wrapped around him and showed her where all the spores were. Spreading and multiplying. Working on a molecular level is entirely new to Korra, but she focused on her ring and focused on sterilizing each infected spore she found.
The only prior experience she had was watching Kyle clean with his, and he made it look ridiculously now that she looked back on it.
Progress was being made, but it was tedious work and Korra knew this wasn’t going to work if she had to do this with everyone. Her ring would run out of charge with merely half of the patients here.
Getting more training on using the ring was becoming a bigger issue and she made a mental note on it.
"I don’t think this is going to work for everyone. Just you and Momo." At least Momo was smaller. Thank you for being a little winged lemur, Momo.
no subject
Aang is in awe.
"Wow...thanks Korra! I feel better already!"
no subject
"All right. Your turn." She did the same procedure with Momo, the transparent light was accompanied by a grid this time to help her pinpoint.
"Did you find the hospital staff too?" Having worked at the hospital since it went up, she needed to know if her co-workers were okay too.
no subject
"Everyone is accounted for...except for Mrs. Reyes."
no subject
But her smile faded rather quickly after she heard Aang.
"She's still missing?" Korra looked over to what's left of the hospital. "I can find her, the ring lets me know if there's anyone still alive." She picked up Momo and held him out to Aang, intent on flying over to search.
no subject
"I've been kind of afraid to ask for more details."
no subject
"Don't worry, I'll be right back." Flying faster than she's done in the past, Korra drifts into what's left of the hospital; but she doesn't need to physically search. All it took was a command of her ring and the answer she received wasn't a welcome one.
No signs of life.
Korra went back to Aang looking down at her ring when she was a couple of inches off the ground.
"I'm sorry." There was at least one thing she could do. "Ring. Scan for Bianca Reyes on Tu Vishan." When people died, they usually came back.
"Not detected."
Her eyes widened at that and she looked over at Aang. That meant-
"She's gone, home."
no subject
"Gone home...like home home? Do you...do you think she's okay?"
no subject
"Her son's gone back home too, so I'm sure she's okay." That didn't stop her from feeling like she lost one of the most important foreigners in her life on Tu Vishan.
"...how many more tents do we need to make?" Not even asking if she can help, it's just something she can focus on to help others.
no subject
He sighs, looking out at the ever expanding field of earthen tents. Just like the one Toph used to make when she was trying to avoid Katara for whatever reason.
"I don't know..." his words trail off. "I was just trying to clear an area, because more people are going to show up as the day goes on, and I want them to have somewhere safe to go to until we can rebuild. Maybe another dozen or so over there?"
no subject
But she looked over at him and nodded. For some reason, she didn't want to burden Aang with any more than he was already dealing with. He wasn't fragile, not by any means, and Korra knew that. But it wasn't a habit she could just shrug off.
He reminded her too much of his grandchildren, the ones she would be looking out for if they were here.
"I'll get those handled." That spiritual connection between them only made her feel like protecting him was protecting herself.
Which in a way, it was. Raava.
Korra blinked at that revelation. The spirit of peace and light was- No, that was something she'd have to talk to him about later. Maybe even meditate with him. It could be the first time in history two avatar's spirits met while they were both alive.
"While I do that, do you want to go back to the suite so you don't get any more spores?" She knew the answer to the question, but asked anyway.
no subject
"Maybe I we can use airbending to control the spores?"
no subject
"They're all over the city, mainly where there's food and water. Someone set it up like that."
But then she realized he probably meant something else.
"Wait, like keeping it away from here?"
no subject
no subject
"That’s perfect! Go ahead and get on that and I’ll earthbend those tents, when I’m done I’ll catch up with you so we can keep everyone safe." Right on track. They could do this together and go over what happened to each other later when things were settled down.
