Jack had spent the last three hours balanced motionlessly on the top of a flagpole, head tilted back as he listened to the wind and the sound of the city below. Where is Winter? it asked. I'm here! the spirit replied, but he knew it didn't mean his physical presence. He'd had too much on his mind and too much in his heart and in that sense he had indeed been absent these last few weeks.

Eyes closed and thoughtlessly trusting, he tipped forward into open air, letting the wind catch him and hurl him upward into the misty cloud cover that scudded across the stars tonight. At his touch they thickened, fat and pale grey against the indigo backdrop and Jack swirled them up, the motions so ingrained in him they felt just like breathing. In the small hours of the morning snowflakes began to fall on the sleeping city, specks at first but then quickly becoming heavier.

Now with a fresh canvas to work with, Jack was really in his element. He could never have done something like this back home, not anywhere in his world. It would have been too strange, too inexplicable, drawn too much attention. But here on the turtle, things were different. There wasn't really a semblance of normal and Jack poured his imagination and heart into the things he wanted most to share, and from the snow rose gleaming swirls of snow and blue light, forming things of exceptional detail and delight.

By the time the sun rose, a solid three feet of the snow had blanketed the city, glistening and crisp and Jack went rocketing down the streets, rapping on doors and windows to leave spirals of frost on every surface.

"Whooohoo! Snow day! Get up sleepyheads, everyone come out and play!"

Her eyes travel back to the source and look down -- footprints appear, but still no shape. How...odd.

"Ah -- I see. On many planets I've visited the weather generally acted of its own accord." 'On its own'.

"Why can't I see you?"

The climate on the turtle seemed closer to...something not quite tropical, but not far from it. He was right, though, judging from the calendars she'd seen, it felt like it ought to be winter even though the weather went against that.

"A spirit?" That has her interested, head tilted a little. "I've never encountered something like that before, here or at home. What is your name?"

She squints, trying to make him out. She doesn't tend to believe in 'spirits', though her experiences on the turtle have vastly broadened her horizons. She thinks...just maybe...

"Inara Serra. It's a pleasure to meet you, Jack."

Pausing, Inara considers her next question before speaking.

"If one begins to believe, do you become visible?"

It’s a striking display; glittering snow falling around the dark haired Companion. Even bundled in her winter coat, Inara shines.

“I suppose that believing in something that is invisible yet directly speaking to me isn’t such a difficult concept.” She pulls in a breath and smiles, eyes briefly closing. “My beliefs aren’t limited to the tangible; it’s no leap to put my faith into you. If you say you exist, then you do.”

She opens her eyes and peeks – would he be visible now?

Squinting against the light, Inara blinks a few times at first to try and allow her vision to focus. Once she has become accustomed once more to the light of the world she exhales a swirl of white as breath meets cold air, and she grins in delight.

"Well wonder of wonders...isn't that something?"

"I can." She's -- certainly surprised at it herself. "How incredibly fascinating. You're a bit blurred around the edges, but yes. I can see you."

She smiles, but she has to agree with him. Being blurry is much better than talking to a disembodied voice.

"It's not so hard to believe in something like you these days, I don't think. Especially when you are in front of me and talking directly to me."

She's glad, because referring to him personally as 'something' wasn't her intention.

"I suppose you're right. But..." She hesitates and leans down to run her fingers through the white powder.

"I...rather like the idea of keeping an open mind. It makes a person more receptive to new experiences."

That makes her smile and laugh; the day feels joyous and lighthearted - no heavy sadness or lingering regret over things past plagued her for the moment.

"It does. I admit I feel...refreshed, today. I don't know how else to explain it." She winks at him. "Maybe meeting new, special people has something to do with it."

She meets his eyes and smiles, expression warm and happy -- a feeling she is clinging to with all of her heart.

"I will. Thank you, Jack."
