Event | Console Crash Chaos | Phase One

Characters: ALL!
Date: April 17-30, 2014
Location: Keeliai
Situation: In an unexpected and bold attack by Malicant, the console system is completely shut down while food and supply locations all around the city are targeted by bombings.
Warnings/Rating: Explosions! Possible descriptions of related aftermaths, injuries, death, etc.

Shortly after eight in the morning of the 17th, the consoles experience a strange glitching effect. They'll display 15-20 seconds of static, interrupting anything being done on them at the time, before going utterly dark. No power, no signal, completely offline even to detection of their normal bio-mechanical signatures. No amount of energy influx will get them going again, though taking them apart (or trying to) will still cause them to melt into goo.

Within minutes of the console shutdown, explosions will begin ripping through Keeliai. The bombs are all timed as close to simultaneous as coordinating a city-wide attack can be, with many going off within seconds of each other, throwing the thriving morning rush into chaos. They tear into businesses and across public spaces, collapsing walls and blowing piles of debris into the streets. Places of high traffic quickly become evident as prime targets: marketplaces, hospitals, schools and cafes. The streets take only moments to fill with panicking, screaming kedan trying to pull their injured fellows out of harm's way. All told, the explosions take place across approximately a 10-minute stretch and their explosive yields are fairly high.

In addition to the bombs that cause destruction through their blasts, smaller bombs are going off around the city that specifically target food and water supplies, particularly where large stocks of it were kept such as grocers, produce markets, and the like. Rather than cause mass damage, these explosions spray out a fine mist of spores. Any perishables in their immediate area that are splattered develop an oozing black mold within minutes, eventually breaking down organic substances that turn to foul smelling rot and release their own mist, perpetuating the cycle. While skin contact with the mist doesn't harm, inhaling or ingesting it will produce shakes, fever, vomiting with a cumulative effect that has the potential to be fatal. It is much slower to infect the water supply but the sheer volume of rotting perishables will eventually put enough of the spores to taint water sources, approximately 6-8 hours after the original bombings.

The police force are out as soon as possible and within the hour are helping move the injured to safer locations with Evandau in charge, right in their midst and shoulder to shoulder with his subordinates. Not being stockpiles for any of the apparent targets, many of the Foreigner residences have been left undamaged and, wary of putting them in further danger by collecting large groups in public spaces, Foreigners may even be asked to take in a few individuals or a kedan family.

Despite the number of explosions, there are far more reports of injuries as opposed to casualties. The person or persons (or That Bad Guy) responsible for this were, for this attack at least, more intent on damage than on death.

Closed to the Hal's

[Hal hadn't touched his ring since his brush with a Sinestro Corps ring. He'd killed his counterpart, maimed his friends, and destroyed relationships. If Wonder Woman hadn't gotten in his way who knew what else he could have done. It was like Parallax all over again, except he had no one else to blame but himself. He didn't deserve the ring and that time in the Dream plane had showed him that there were at least other avenues he could take to be of use without it.

Except when the bombs hit there was too much chaos. By himself he could only help move the injured, one kedan at a time and while he did what he could, the knowledge that he had the ability to do more burned in the back of his mind until he couldn't ignore it any longer. He ran back to his place and pulled the ring and lantern out from under the bed, charged his ring and raced back into the fray. He's glowing green, evidence of the protective field being active, but he's still in his soot stained flight jacket instead of the standard issue green and black uniform of the Corps. That's still a privilege he considers himself unworthy of. But now he's able to hold buildings up, carry people and even sterilise food and he does so as he heads towards the one building he's avoided this entire time.

He doesn't know if the reason it takes him so long to get there is because he's trying to avoid it or if it's because there are so many people that need help, but eventually he reaches his counterpart's place.

He was picked for his ability to overcome fear. Hal takes a deep breath before hammering on the door.]

Hey, you in there?!
corage: can I turn in my resignation (I did not sign up for this)

Halcest let's do this

[personal profile] corage 2014-04-17 01:27 pm (UTC)(link)
[This Hal as well hadn't been coping well since his 'death', and if anything was probably handling it worse than his counterpart. But what happened to him was a harsh wake-up call he was forced to face - the fact that he could never, would never be the same Hal Jordan as the other was. They may look the same and even have the same ideals and background, but they were never going to be the same person. And nobody would ever look at him and actually see him as the Hal he is, not the Hal everyone else thought he was.

Still, his own troubles didn't concern the chaos that was going on right now. He had been in his room when everything had begun, and superhero or not Hal, too, was out doing his best to help. He may not have his ring any more but hell if others were going to suffer. He could still do stuff even without his ring, had been for a long time. He didn't need a stupid ring to prove himself to anybody.

After a while of helping out Hal eventually returns back to his suite in order to take a short break, but before he can do that there's a hammering on his door accompanied with the last person Hal wants to hear anytime soon.]

No. [He snaps out before he can think twice about it and turns on his swivel chair away from the door. Yeah, like hell if he's going to talk to the asshole and pretend that everything is alright.]

[Hal bites back some less than nice words. He regretted his actions, but it didn't make the other's reaction any less of a pain in the ass.]

Okay, you're fine. I know I screwed up and I'm sorry, but could you open the damn door!
corage: (possibly sort of annoyed.)

cw: hal jordan

[personal profile] corage 2014-04-18 05:21 pm (UTC)(link)
[Well, its not like this Hal is making any attempt at being nice. Any thought of that vanished two months ago the moment he found his death at his counterpart's hands.]

I've got no reason to listen to you. [He's not even a Lantern anymore, so suck on that Hal.]
animosus: (( ɢʟ ) i'm pretty fly for a white guy)

you mean tw

[personal profile] animosus 2014-04-19 10:41 am (UTC)(link)
I don't want you to listen, I want to know you didn't get caught up in explosions and then I want you to get out here and do some ring slinging. In case you hadn't realised, this is our job!

[He could be stubborn, but being stubborn at the expense of other's was something Hal couldn't put up with.]
corage: (at the crossroads.)

w/e its the same with these two anyway

[personal profile] corage 2014-04-19 02:36 pm (UTC)(link)
[Hey, he just helped people, why do you think he's back here? Rude, other Hal.]

And I just did it. Now scram and leave me alone.
animosus: (( ɢʟ ) he's gonna play the field)

...true

[personal profile] animosus 2014-04-21 10:17 am (UTC)(link)
[On the other side of the door Hal has fashioned a battering ram construct that he's preparing to use if this keeps up.]

Then what's this I hear about 'Green Lantern Korra'?

[He already flipped out when he first heard it, now he needs to flip out again.]
corage: but you should be used to this (sorry about the screw ups)

such losers

[personal profile] corage 2014-04-21 03:43 pm (UTC)(link)
[See Hal things like this is why your counterpart has issues with you. Not that he isn't guilty of the same himself when it comes to it, but he hasn't had issues like that, so.]

There's another Green Lantern and her name is Korra. I thought that was pretty obvious.

[Ugh why can't he just go away. It's not he's going to make things any better.]
animosus: (( ʜᴊ ) 20)

[personal profile] animosus 2014-04-23 11:35 am (UTC)(link)
[That's it. He's done being 'diplomatic'. The battering ram goes through the door and Hal steps in after.]

Who gave you the right to add another to the ranks?!

[While he's done it before, it was under different circumstances and that had been his role at the time.]
corage: (so done with this BS)

[personal profile] corage 2014-04-23 02:31 pm (UTC)(link)
[As if 'Hal' and 'diplomatic' could ever be in the same sentence.

And of course, this Hal obviously Is Not Pleased with what his counterpart is doing, and it shows clearly in his face as he glares at the other.]

What the fuck do you think you're doing?!
animosus: (( ɢʟ ) i'm pretty fly for a white guy)

[personal profile] animosus 2014-04-25 12:05 pm (UTC)(link)
[Hal's rage runs cold and he's calm as he retorts. Ordinarily he'd be just as fired up, but the circumstances were special.]

Being done with watching you throw a tantrum and disrespect the Corps.
corage: this job sucks (did not see that coming at all)

[personal profile] corage 2014-04-26 04:23 am (UTC)(link)
['Special' yeah you got that right, you jerk.]

You're in no position to speak yourself. [He snaps back without really thinking about it.]
animosus: (( ʜᴊ ) 32)

[personal profile] animosus 2014-04-27 11:16 am (UTC)(link)
[A while ago, that remark would of hit its mark, but Hal's made peace with his past.]

I know I've made mistakes, but I've owned up to them unlike you.
corage: (run that through one more time.)

[personal profile] corage 2014-04-27 02:29 pm (UTC)(link)
[Hal just lets out a snort in a way that shows his own disbelief over that response.]

Funny, I don't seem to see that at all.
animosus: (( ɢʟ ) he sees homies as he pass)

[personal profile] animosus 2014-05-01 06:12 am (UTC)(link)
I was trying to give you space! What the hell do you expect from me? You hate me, I get it and I thought you could do with a bit of breathing room, but then you had to go and throw away your ring.

The most powerful weapon in the universe and you just throw it out where anyone could find it. So I'm sorry for what I did, but right now I have to clean up your mess.
corage: did you just call me responsible (wait what)

[personal profile] corage 2014-05-01 02:13 pm (UTC)(link)
[Try as he might there's only so much goddamned hypocrisy Hal can put up from his counterpart, and at the end he just turns around, eyes glaring daggers at the other Hal as he all but snaps, letting the words and anger fly.]

My mess? My mess? Who was the fucker who killed me in the first place? Who let himself get overtaken by fear? Who turned against everything we've lived for in our lives just for power?

[That's the crux of the entire matter - that Hal - the other Hal, Hal the Great and Almighty and Ever Fearless - actually let fear take over him. And if even he fell to it, then what chance had he?]

Don't you even remember what dad told us? What he said? That its our job to be fearless! To remember the courage inside of us! And you just threw that all away in a fucking heartbeat! Don't talk to me about messes when you haven't even fixed your own!

[He stops after that, if only because he's run out of breath, panting to catch said breath but continues to glare at Hal all the same. He's done with your bullshit, Hal. He's so done with it all.]

[While other people may have looked up to Hal and put him on a pedestal, he's always known how fallible he could be especially after the whole Parallax incident. It was also a little known fact that he didn't originally want the ring and the responsibilities that it brought.]

I screwed up! I'm only human. [He doesn't want to admit it, but bringing up their father is hitting a lot of sore points. He falls silent, he no longer wants to yell.] I have never been fearless. Fear always has and always will be a part of my life. I know I'm not living up to dad's words. [Words he's never heard his dad say, but if this Hal says he did say them it's good enough for him.

Hal's always wondered if his dad would be proud of him despite everything he's done and it's things like this that make him lean towards no.]

I screw up all the time. I know, but this isn't about me. You're using me as an excuse to dig yourself a bigger hole and I'm not going to enable that.
corage: but not one of the few. (just one of the many.)

[personal profile] corage 2014-05-05 04:00 pm (UTC)(link)
[Like it or not, the response hits Hal in a few spots as well. I'm only human. He had said that before, too, before the Guardians, before Sinestro, when was pleading to them his case to have them help him defeat Parallax.

(There's a saying we have on Earth: I'm only human. We say it because we're afraid, we say it because we've screwed up.)

As much as he wants to Hal can't find the energy inside of him to flare up again, and he just slumps back down to his chair, tired and exhausted, just so done with all of this. He never asked for this, never for this life. He knew he was never cut out for this life and he was trying, god he was trying, but--if even the other Hal can't do it, then how could he? What chance did he have?]

Fear is part of your life, but so is courage. [He eventually says, the only thing he can say - the words that Carol told him, the words that gave him the strength to go up against Parallax.] And that's all we need to overcome that fear.

Then show it. Take the ring back. Be the man Abin Sur wanted us to be.

[While Hal doesn't take the shadow he casts into account, he can take into account that while he's had years to grow out of Abin Sur's shadow, this Hal hasn't had that opportunity.]
corage: a green lantern (remember who you are)

[personal profile] corage 2014-05-23 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
[And this is why this Hal will never understand him. Abin Sur was one thing, but when you're overshadowed by another version of yourself? It's another thing altogether.]

I don't need a ring to prove myself.
animosus: (( ʜᴊ ) but he fakes it anyway)

[personal profile] animosus 2014-06-07 09:23 am (UTC)(link)
You're right. But at least take it back so it's not out there in unknown hands.
