The Midnight Hotel January catch-all
Characters: Anyone, everyone.
Date: Month of January, 2016
Location: The Midnight Hotel
Situation: Catch-all post! Feel free to use this post for anything that happens within the Midnight Hotel over the month of January, using the subject header to label specific rooms or for specific people. Please also see the OOC note at the bottom.
Warnings/Rating: None thus far.
The Midnight Hotel was among the few buildings which showed no sign of having been damaged by the invasion six months ago. That followed, of course; the Hotel hadn't even been present. But either way it stood out, and many of the kedan knew by now that the building, so different from the architecture of the rest of the city, was a safe-haven. Too many mistook it as a Foreigner safe-haven alone, but not all; even now there was usually one or two kedan present.
Some of them were gang-members, ones with whom Anton had forged closer relationships before the Foreigners' year-long disappearance or simply those who chose to visit in defiance of the general public's opinion.
Anton had taken great pains to give the Foreigners structure and normalcy. While the means of payment were, in some cases, not much more than an illusion, he gave as much in the way of purpose as he could. As a result there were now many Foreigners on staff at the Hotel, though of course the rules were still in strict effect. Anton himself was readily available at most given moments if needed for assistance, questions or otherwise.
There was also an oddity in the lobby: a construction in one of the corners where a long bank of three public consoles was being built. The Metalworkers responsible for its construction were generally taciturn and more concerned with their work than with interactions, but they didn't seem worried about being observed or by the close proximity of the Foreigners.
[ooc: The Midnight Hotel's status page is available here, with the rules at the top and ongoing status at the bottom. PLEASE POST TO THE STATUS PAGE IF YOUR CHARACTER WOULD LIKE A ROOM. Anton will manufacture means of payment until Foreigners are able to properly offer recompense or choose to move out, so you can assume they're 'paying' in some method.
If you have a specific job for your character to do around the Hotel (eg working the kitchen, security, house chores) please also note that so I can keep track of Anton's casual staff.]

Re: Lobby: OTA
She spotted Valdis in the corner, and a brief surge of comfort washed over her. Thanks to Anton's intervention when Sonja had arrived, she now associated Valdis with emotional safety. She walked over and squatted down, reaching her hand out to pet the large dog.
"Hi, there."

She was not entirely thrilled that the girl had approached her, but it wouldn't do to snap at her now. Especially when she knew that the girl meant no insult. It was Anton's fault that the girl thought that she could pet the 'dog'.
Hello. Valdis replied, looking back over at the kedan. She hoped that the girl wouldn't spook too badly at hearing the voice in her head, but a bit of surprise wouldn't be unwarranted.
no subject
Did I even actually 'hear' that?
"Alright, Sonja, you've done enough freaking out to last at least a few more weeks," she mumbled. "Let's just suspend our disbelief a bit for now."
She turned back to Valdis. "So Anton wasn't exaggerating when he said you were 'no ordinary animal,' I take it?" She put her hands in her lap, suddenly intensely uncomfortable and somewhat mortified that she'd petted something that could talk. "I... thank you. For the other day, I mean. It was- thanks. I'm sorry, I didn't mean to be a bother..."
no subject
Anton rarely exaggerates, she replied, wondering what exactly she should tell Sonja about who she was. But do not worry, you are no bother. A pause, My name is Valdis.

Sonja looked around, suddenly self-conscious about how she might look talking to a dog. She readjusted herself, putting her back against the wall with her hands around her knees and trying to match Valdis' gaze. She spotted the metalworkers in Valdis' line of sight.
Sonja didn't have a compulsion to fill silences. People-watching was actually one of her favorite pastimes. After a bit of watching, however, Sonja was struck with a revelation.
"Are they installing computers?" Her enthusiasm was hard to contain. Sonja was not a computer genius or a crack engineer, but computer use was more or less hardwired into her. The last two weeks had been made worse by not being able to log onto World of Tanks, and she was sure that her photo blog followers were wallowing in neglect without her updates.
This also left Sonja somewhat confused, since the crazy sword man outside the city had implied that everything in this world was primitive and backwards. How does a world with computers not have planes?
The excitement was enough to bypass pretty much every social anxiety that Sonja possessed. She bounced up from her seat and half-skipped to the nearest metalworker. "Hi! Are you installing computers? Are they network capable? When will they be ready? Are they being installed for a specific purpose or are these public terminals?"

With that she turned back to continue setting the goo-globules that would grow into the console's biomechanics with every intention of not turning around again, even if the girl did try to engage her again. Some of the others had glanced up, but none had stopped, and likewise were intent on their tasks.
no subject
Thank you, she replied, Your name is lovely as well.
Before she could answer Sonja's question about the computer, the young girl was up and bounding over to talk to the Metalworkers. Valdis hissed quietly and stood, following the girl over. Her lips curled back at the Kedan's less than kind response and she stepped to the girl's side, lowering her head so that she was at eye level with the speaker.
There is no need to be rude, Valdis growled. She had been watching the Kedan long enough to think that they might be able to hear, but if not, then her show of teeth should be enough to get her point across.
Uh oh, you caught sonja at the wrong time dude
But more importantly, did this wage worker just dismiss her? Sonja's composure completely changed. She was rigid, hard, her eyes taking on a menacing intensity, the only way a world leader, a commander of thousands of men, defender of three continental invasions, and daughter of the greatest military leader in Wars World could.
"Excuse me, when I ask you a question, you answer it." Sonja was not yelling exactly, but her voice could carry quite a way with this authoritarian tone, and it filled the entire room, turning many heads towards Sonja and the technician.

"I'll take care of this," she said, and straightened up all of her five-foot height and looked Valdis squarely in the eye. She stood between them and the other Metalworkers, even though all Valdis had to do was leap over her to get to them. "I've been informed that this building is a place of no-violence," she said, "so you can take back your snarling, because it's meaningless unless you intend to ambush us outside the building like one of Yunxu's common thugs."
The Metalworker dropped her gaze to look at Sonja, apparently unconcerned by the fangs not far from her head and unimpressed by Sonja's demanding posture. "As for you, young lady," she said, "we're being paid to install a console. We're not being paid to answer questions. We're not being paid to entertain you. We're not being paid to get distracted. Give us the basic courtesy of letting us work or I'll be forced to complain to the proprietor, and from everything I've heard about him, he's not someone to cross."
no subject
I like you, She told the woman, her large green eyes glittering in amusement. She turned her head to nudge Sonja. Apologize to the woman for your rudeness and let them continue their work in peace.
no subject
Obviously Valdis was somehow misinterpreting the facts.
Seeing that she was in-effect outnumbered, however, the correct tactical choice was to retreat. She would not surrender, however. She turned back to the metalworker with a composed, if not haughty expression.
"Thank you for answering my question. That will be all."
She turned around and started walking.
Where are we going? I don't know yet. Are we going back to our room? We just came from there because we were trying to get out and there's nothing to do in there. Right. So. The door. That leads outside. That would be the only logical solution, wouldn't it?
Sonja slightly faltered as she approached the door leading out of the hotel. She seemed to remember Skulduggery saying that there were five doors leading to this one entrance? How did you pick where you ended up?
She made a half-gaze back towards the lobby, but stopped herself, for fear of looking weak after that display, and instead marched through the door.

"You've got your hands full with that one," she said with a snort, half to Valdis and half to the air, and turned to stump back to the abandoned task of setting the goo-globules.
