Sonja January Catch-All
Characters: Sonja, Open!
Date: Month of January, 2016
Location: Anyplace in Keeliai and its surrounding area
Situation: Sonja is figuring this city and its denizens out
Warnings/Rating: None
[ A: The Fire Sector - Trouble's Brewing ]
Sonja's first steps into the Fire Sector instantly erased any concerns she had about leaving the Midnight Hotel (and the uncomfortable altercation she hadmaybe started).
"I obviously entered through the wrong quarter," Sonja reflected. The Wood Sector was rustic and all, but trees and fruit definitely couldn't hold her attention as well as fire fountains and gargoyle statues. Plus, there were no fruit vendors to knock over. That was definitely also a thing that differentiated the two. Sonja idly wondered if fruit vendors were going to be a panic attack trigger in the future. She hoped to the spirits that that wasn't true. She had enough weird quirks as it was.
She started to wander around, although she quickly noticed the suspicious glances that were frequently tossed her way. She was even like 75% sure that she wasn't imagining most of them. She attributed most of it to foreigner-phobia (the rational part of her brain, anyway) and tried to put it out of her mind as she wandered the beautiful streets. What she didn't notice right away was the Snake who had spotted her and the sidearm she had brought with her, ignorant of the Kedan's rules on weaponry. The Snake slithered away to get some backup.
[ B: The Metal Sector - Check this place out ]
"Am I still in Keeliai?" Sonja thought aloud, as she took her first steps into the Metal Sector. Featureless metal facades rose up on either side of the street she was standing in. This city was just perplexing. How could there be such a stark difference in architecture, technology and culture just a few miles apart?
There were a lot of things that Sonja was interested in, and the idea that she couldn't just order her chamberlain to acquire it for her was a bit hard to swallow. She was content to stay of guest of Anton's at the hotel, but she doubted anyone else would be quite as hospitable with their property. She was either going to have to embrace asceticism, or she was going to have to find some kind of job.
[ C: Keeliai - I Spy ]
There were a lot of things in Keeliai that were new and interesting: the city, the people, the foreigners and all the strange technologies and physics they seemed to bring with them. The only responsible and forward thinking thing to do is document them. And documentation required observation, preferably of the stealthy variety. Sonja wasn't a hide in the bushes type, but she was pretty good at hiding in plain sight while her phone camera recorded away.
She did occasionally get caught, however...
[ D: Midnight Hotel Commons - Closed to Donatello ]
Sonja sits on a bench with some papers scattered about. On page are the words
Kerror Raris the Mother still lives
south caldera, beneath the blue eyes

D for Donatello
He'd been told to look for a girl sitting alone. "Alone" is easy; distinguishing age and gender in humans sometimes gives him trouble. Fortunately the commons isn't crowded, and only one patron seems to fit the description.
"Hi," Don says, as he approaches the table. "You must be -" She hadn't given her name. "- the brilliant code-solver."

"Well, man-sized, I suppose, considering 'giant' is an appellation reserved for the continent-sized beast upon which we reside."
no subject
"Donatello," he says, as he takes a seat. "No relation to the Tu Vishan." Aside from being parent to one of the now-deceased hatchlings, a thought which might show on his face.
no subject
"I assume with the familiarity that you use the giant turtle's name that you've been here awhile."
no subject
That seems to involve some painful memories as well.

"So, ah... the south caldera. A caldera is the vent of a volcano's magma chamber. Where is there a volcano around here?"
no subject
"Not quite. A caldera is a geological feature that occurs when the magma chamber empties in such a way that the edifice above it collapses, leaving a depression. Its similar to a crater, although the mechanism of its creation and its physical attributes are different. Given time, it is often filled with water. We could be looking for a lake."
"Asti doesn't have magma vents on its back, does it? Could this be referring to something on a foreign continent or island?" Sonja had been busy on the network since her arrival, and had become superficially familiar with more recent events, including that there existed a world beyond the turtle shell, from which resources were gathered and foreign invaders hailed.
no subject
"What is that?" he asks, pointing to the device in Sonja's hand.

She pulled up a music video and showed the screen to Don. A group of five young girls in frilly costumes and colorful hair, dancing and singing to an upbeat Electronica song.
She gave Donatello's large three-fingered hands a nervous glance. "It would probably be pretty hard to use the touchscreen for you, but you can try out the stylus if you promise to be careful."
no subject
"That's all right. Did you make it yourself?"
no subject
"These are relatively common consumer devices, although this particular one is top-of-the-line. That is, where I come from. But here, in Keeliai, it is a spectacular, irreplaceable extension of my brain.
"It's highly modular, mostly software-wise but even with hardware to some extent, but without internet, app market places or accessory stores, what it had when I was nabbed is what it stays with. Well, that and whatever Tony can rig up."
no subject
"Anyway - yes, there are other continents, though I've only been to one of them. Geography isn't really my strong suit; I couldn't tell you what the other land masses of this world are like."

Or is he misunderstanding the sentence?
no subject
Was that too much? Maybe she spent too much time on Tumblr.

"It's complicated. Um. So like - I think, mothers are generally considered 'she' because of this association of gender with, um, biology? But not everyone likes that?" Oh spirits, could you be more inarticulate about this?
no subject
Don may be a dunce when it comes to grammar, but he is pretty well-read in the sciences.
"In sexually-reproducing species," he says, "mothers are by definition female. It's not a matter of like or dislike."
no subject
"So anyway, we need to find out about Kerror Raris the Mother, and we need to find out about the South Caldera, and neither of us have any idea where to start. I have a few people who might know where to start. Do you have any contacts of your own?"
