Situation: Zatanna has a theory. With a little help from some new friends and some not-so-new friends, she's about to test that theory out...

Warnings/Rating: UNPREDICTABLE MAGIC

Note: This Log with be separated into three parts. First will be the Pre-Spell Mingle, which is exactly what it sounds like. Characters will be given the opportunity to meet and greet with one another, discuss their respective magics, theories as to what might happen, etc. The second will be the Spell Casting, where each character involved will be given the opportunity to show off his/her/their stuff.

The third part of the Log will be the Results/Aftermath. Basically, once I have word from the mods how the Spell Casting will go, the subheader will be edited to include every last detail. From there, characters will be given the chance to react accordingly.

[Gene waved back, and watched her go about her business marking sigils on the ground.]

I have to say, I've never seen anything like this before.

[Given their last conversation, that didn't surprise her.]

It would have been even easier to set up if we were back home.

The rules here have always been...slightly different.

That's true, [he said, and nodded. Even the rings were a little off here, or maybe his control of them had waned after they'd returned to the Makluan Overlord's hand; regardless, he was getting better with them, his skills more refined.]

Any particular position you need me for?

Well...let's see...

[Her mind went back to what he had told her. What he was capable of doing. He wasn't one of the bodyguards, but he also wasn't too well versed in these types of spells.]

Not particular. We're not going in any one set order. When the time comes, you'll stand on one of those points--[She motioned to the outer edge of the circle drawn on the ground. While there were no set "points", per say, it was clear from the way she indicated around that people were meant to stand on the edge. Most likely, facing inward.]--there, and I'll be here, in the center.

Your job will be to focus as much of your energy as possible, sending it to the middle of the circle.

[Gene smiles slowly.] Great. So I'll be a battery for this part. I guess this means I have to stay on the edge and not move.

[Not like he planned to, but...well, he's always on the lookout for an attack from some quarter. 'Perks' of growing up paranoid.]

Not just any battery, though. A very useful, very important battery.

[Trying to make light of the label. She wasn't entirely wrong, either. Whatever he wanted to call it, he was still a part of this whole thing, and they would be that much stronger because of it.]

And, just for the record, you are allowed to breathe. This might go on for a while, so that might've been an issue for some.

Yes, breathing's important, [he said dryly, but he was a little soothed by the ego-stroking. Hey, who wouldn't be? Everyone likes to be told they're important.] I mean, not breaking the circle for any reason. I get the feeling that could throw things off.

[She could empathize with that sentiment.]

Yeah, no, we don't want to do that.

Breaking a circle automatically cancels out any spell being cast inside it. And we're preparing for this way too much to want to accidentally hit the emergency breaks before it can go anywhere.

[Gene nodded. This was some serious stuff, and he wasn't about to knock the arcane rules or weird chalk drawings. In his time in Keeliai, he'd learned to respect magical systems, no matter how strange they seemed.]

I'll be sure to keep my post, then, [he said.] Anything else I should know before we begin?

[She thought about that for a moment.]

Nothing you won't figure out along the way, really.

That sounds ominous, [Gene said, resuming his dry tone.]

I try.

[Though, all things considered, she didn't seem overly concerned.]

You sure we'll have enough power for this? [he asked, almost rhetorically. He remembered Valdis' recent attempt and how disastrous that had been, and the thing she and Wan had tried before fighting Malicant.] Only I'm not looking forward to another vision like that.

Sure, I'm sure. [...mostly.] I've got this all planned out.

We have multiple experts on detection. We've gone more magic users in one spot than since the Dream realm fight. And, on top of that, we're just taking a little look at the magic in the area. What could possibly go wrong?

[...yup. She said it.]

[Gene winced.] Oh, you did not just say that, [he said with a groan.]

I'll spare you from my worst-case scenarios, though. Not exactly great for building confidence.

[...oops?]

So I'm trying to remain positive here. Is that so wrong?

...besides, the more negative you are, the better chance of something going wrong. Sometimes, feigning confidence is just as good as the real thing.

I try and do my best not to tempt fate, [he said, though he'd been cocky in the past. And learned his lesson, that was for damn sure.]

Well - let me just say I have every confidence in you. [Outside factors, well...]

[...he just had to go and use the f word, didn't he?]

[In her defense, she managed not to wince too noticeably. That didn't even have anything to do with the current spell, and yet...it was a very powerful reminder of what could happen when she didn't entirely think things through. Fate. Specifically, The Helmet of.]

Yeah. Thanks.

That actually means a lot.

[Huh. Well. That was interesting. Looked like they both had some potential issues with destiny.

But that would be a subject for later.]

Hey, anytime. I appreciate that you're doing this. Hope we get something useful from this recon.

[She nodded, her main focus returning to the symbols she had drawn on the ground. Going over them all yet again. just in case.]

Yeah.

I'll get ready, [Gene says, and goes to stand on the circle. He prepares the rings on his fingers and closes his eyes, breathing in and out in the meditative way Skul had instructed him in,]
