While Costigan speaks, Jack manages to get himself back under control, tamping down once again on the emotions storming through him. He shoved the heel of his hand against one eye, roughly wiping it, listening to the words in their unique Bostonian accent. As Costigan's past unfolds the spirit feels disquieted by the knowledge, ashamed of his own hurts. He'd been the one to die and brought back with no memory, he'd never had to live through the immediacy of the loss and then the added sting in the way the rest of his family behaved the way the undercover had.
In a way, Jack's pains were selfish... he chose to yearn for them after the fact and though he knew that was probably not the intention the man had for telling him these things, nonetheless it gave him some perspective to force away his own sorrows. When he spoke again, his voice was steadier.
"I'm glad he was there for you," Jack said softly, once Costigan had finished. "You deserve to have someone in your corner, Billy. And... I'm sorry, about your mom and dad. For what it's worth, I think he'd be proud of you, for doing the right thing even when it was hard."
