Aang slept.

In those first few hours, Toph only really left when he slept. Hard, perhaps, even for her to say why. Certainly he was well cared for, he was safe, he as comfortable as could be managed . . . but somehow, even knowing that, it wasn't enough. She had to be there, be present.

Maybe she was afraid he would slip away, vanish under her fingertips. Maybe it was because she'd long ago decided he was family. . . . Maybe he was just the only thing that had made sense since she'd come here, and at a time when very little made sense at all.

But when he slept this time, she'd left the room, padding down the hallway to the exit. There she leaned against the wall, sliding downward until she slipped into a sitting position, tucking her legs underneath her. Her head rested back against the cool smoothness of the surface behind her. To anyone not knowing better, they might have thought she'd fallen asleep.

They would deal with it, she'd promised Korra. That conversation between them yesterday was a stain in Toph's mind, jagged and abrasive. She'd grown to trust the Avatar with a great deal; Korra had been solace and sanity in a world where there wasn't a lot of it. They didn't need shit between them. Especially not now.

Korra was in the building; Toph had both heard her earlier and picked her out with seismic sense. Settled in the hallway, she waited for the Avatar to finish her shift.
