The Midnight Hotel fares well against the earthquake caused by the turtle running aground – it’s built for these kinds of damages to begin with, but apparently its unique interdimensional position lends it an element of security. It suffers no damage from the quake; not even the effects of objects being shaken off their shelves.

The fog, on the other hand, is a major problem all month. Whatever Anton’s troubles in November, in December he barely has time to think about them while keeping up with maintaining the Hotel’s wards and utilities. Though nothing breaks suddenly, the fog has a constant degrading effect on the magic of the Midnight Hotel. The fog getting inside and lingering is a serious concern.

Herra and Muf, Anton’s two security kedan, station people by the doors to make sure they get closed after use; likewise, anyone who leaves a window open is liable to be, at best, snapped at; at worst, fined (only a small amount, such as if someone loses their room-key). Despite their conscientiousness, the Hotel’s amenities are tied into the wards, so the oppressiveness of the fog outside is enough to cause glitches and problems all through the building.

The front door’s ability to change between sectors bears the brunt of the problems, so much so that this feature is turned off for the duration of the month, leaving people forced to enter and exit into Central for the whole of December. Even that doesn't completely fix the problem, since the interdimensionality is the Hotel's natural state; so every now and then a patron might find themselves dumped somewhere else without warning as they exit.

Other than that, there are constant small problems: water doesn’t come through taps, or comes through too strong; wall sockets lose power; small appliances receive a surge of power; the internal temperatures go haywire, with some rooms sometimes being too hot or too cold. The walls will frequently show the effects too – sometimes they will spark with no apparent cause, or the sooty outline of a sigil will appear as they’re burned out.

To keep the Hotel running this month Anton is on his toes, though luckily it seems to mean he isn’t chewing on his issues as much.
