There's an old philosopher named Hobbes who basically said that all men were driven by self-preservation, that good only comes from the benefits you can receive by performing the task.

At the end of the day, that's all "good" is. A justification for people to sleep at night, or to make themselves look better, or to improve some aspect of their lives.
