Event | Console Crash Chaos | Phase One

Characters: ALL!
Date: April 17-30, 2014
Location: Keeliai
Situation: In an unexpected and bold attack by Malicant, the console system is completely shut down while food and supply locations all around the city are targeted by bombings.
Warnings/Rating: Explosions! Possible descriptions of related aftermaths, injuries, death, etc.

Shortly after eight in the morning of the 17th, the consoles experience a strange glitching effect. They'll display 15-20 seconds of static, interrupting anything being done on them at the time, before going utterly dark. No power, no signal, completely offline even to detection of their normal bio-mechanical signatures. No amount of energy influx will get them going again, though taking them apart (or trying to) will still cause them to melt into goo.

Within minutes of the console shutdown, explosions will begin ripping through Keeliai. The bombs are all timed as close to simultaneous as coordinating a city-wide attack can be, with many going off within seconds of each other, throwing the thriving morning rush into chaos. They tear into businesses and across public spaces, collapsing walls and blowing piles of debris into the streets. Places of high traffic quickly become evident as prime targets: marketplaces, hospitals, schools and cafes. The streets take only moments to fill with panicking, screaming kedan trying to pull their injured fellows out of harm's way. All told, the explosions take place across approximately a 10-minute stretch and their explosive yields are fairly high.

In addition to the bombs that cause destruction through their blasts, smaller bombs are going off around the city that specifically target food and water supplies, particularly where large stocks of it were kept such as grocers, produce markets, and the like. Rather than cause mass damage, these explosions spray out a fine mist of spores. Any perishables in their immediate area that are splattered develop an oozing black mold within minutes, eventually breaking down organic substances that turn to foul smelling rot and release their own mist, perpetuating the cycle. While skin contact with the mist doesn't harm, inhaling or ingesting it will produce shakes, fever, vomiting with a cumulative effect that has the potential to be fatal. It is much slower to infect the water supply but the sheer volume of rotting perishables will eventually put enough of the spores to taint water sources, approximately 6-8 hours after the original bombings.

The police force are out as soon as possible and within the hour are helping move the injured to safer locations with Evandau in charge, right in their midst and shoulder to shoulder with his subordinates. Not being stockpiles for any of the apparent targets, many of the Foreigner residences have been left undamaged and, wary of putting them in further danger by collecting large groups in public spaces, Foreigners may even be asked to take in a few individuals or a kedan family.

Despite the number of explosions, there are far more reports of injuries as opposed to casualties. The person or persons (or That Bad Guy) responsible for this were, for this attack at least, more intent on damage than on death.

Rapunzel keeps her distance from Derek and Stiles, if only because there's something intimate about the way they react to each other and it would feel like intruding if she stepped too close. She still spoke up again.

"But you could still get hurt. If that happens I should be there to-"

She stopped herself, remembering that she hasn't told Derek about her hair. She glanced at Stiles, quietly wondering if he had said anything to him.

"...To help."

The Mandarin was partially correct in his deduction of Bakura's magic, but it wasn't a voice that the thief needed... it was concentration and having a gout of water shoved down his throat disrupted it. The blob of water lifted him off the ground and held him aloft, giving him no purchase to lash out physically and find something to pull himself out of it. The half breath he'd managed to suck in as the water blob formed wasn't going to last more than a moment or two so he had to make a strike count.

Trap Card... Enchanted Javelin!

Responding to the silently commanded play, a wing-tipped spear appeared in midair before launching at high speed across the intervening distance to strike the black armored chest plate and explode with a concussive force.

Stiles looks from Derek to Rapunzel and back again, both of them practically choking on their secrets. Well, that's gotta stop.

"Ugh. Okay. Derek has a healing factor, which makes him think he's freakin' invulnerable like Wolverine or something, but his scruff game much stronger. Rapunzel has a nifty trick she does that can heal people too, which makes her think that she has to save all the little critters in nature. Both of you are staying inside this house. We can find out what's going on when the explosions stop!"

A

[He is taking tea at his favorite cafe--a cheerful, brightly decorated affair with a spot cleared out in the front just for him--when the explosions begin.

At first he does not know what is happening, at all. A beam clouts him across the head, and stars explode in his vision, and then suddenly there are shouts, and cries, and it is like Dover, or Jena, or Cape Town: splintered wood, and fires, and the stink of burnt kedan flesh, wholly unappetising to the tongue.

Then his vision clears, and he pulls free of the debris, shaking his wings clear: the membranes a little beaten, and torn in places by splinters, but otherwise serviceable. A few injured kedan clutch at his breastplate, and he lets them, with only a brief admonishment for them to hold tight.

He deposits them clear of the rubble, then heads straight back to the cafe. Time is of the essence, he knows, and he can clear boulders and beams away better than most.]

B

[Whether it is by some fluke, or some tactical error, Temeraire does not know, but his and the other foreigners' apartments have all been spared--for the moment, at least.

Any other moment, and he would be hesitant about letting a crowd of dirty, bleeding kedan into his immaculately clean home. But the shouting--the smoke--it is none of it something civilians ought to be caught up in, and anyway there is space in his apartment for more than a few, is there not? And they are all so very small, compared to him.

Most of the kedan file inside without a word, but one particularly grubby kedan, whom he has not seen before, takes one look at him and begins to wail in its mother's arms. Any attempt to console it only makes it cry harder, and Temeraire, staring down at the infant, finds his ruff rising in dismay and confusion.]

You're welcome.

[Clara drops down onto the floor next to her and leans against the wall. She feels exhausted and weak, like she has a fever. But she figures it must just be from stress and shock. One of the kedan children comes and crawls into her lap. Her eyes move towards the window.]

It's been quiet for awhile. Hopefully that's a good sign.

We won't know until whoever did this contacts us. Assuming they ever do.

[Her movements are slow and deliberate, and for a war brat who spent the majority of the last year of her pre-Turtle life around soldiers...she had surprisingly polished manners. Small bites. Chewing quietly, with her mouth closed. Swallowing before taking another forkful.]

I thought about it. Who they might be.

[Once she had calmed down some and realized there was no possible way the Alliance could be here.]

Leo's still trying to regain his bearings as he surveys the damage, but it's almost as though someone filled his lungs up halfway with water, and breathing becomes a challenge that's impossible to ignore - he staggers back from the roof's edge and gives a few more deep, shuddering coughs, his chest heaving with the effort of suppressing his gag reflex. After no less than half a minute, he finally spits and swallows down the residue coating his throat.

Ugh. That wasn't normal smoke. What the hell was that?

He doesn't have time to worry about it now - whatever it is, most of the kedan aren't blessed with the ability to escape to the rooftops to avoid the smog, and one glance below shows them clustered in the streets, some covering their noses with sleeves and scarves, some curled up on the dirt in fits of coughing, and worst of all, some hacking and gasping so violently they begin to be sick.

The damage to property is minimal, and these people are acting like they've just been stricken by the damn plague. The answer slams into Leo's head all too quickly: the smoke is the weapon.

No time to waste... time to do something really stupid. Leo drags in as deep a breath he can manage, then sprints off the roof's edge, snatching a towel from a clothesline on his way down. He lands on all fours, quickly fashions the towel into a scarf that covers the lower portion of his face, and takes off into the streets.

The console here is down. I assume it's the same everywhere.

[She watches Midii eat, amused at her delicate manners but also appreciative. That's the sort of behavior from children she likes to see. She runs her fingers through the Kedan child's hair before leaning back against the wall heavily and looking up at the ceiling.]

And what did you think?

[personal profile] puppetfetish 2014-04-23 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
That's what I think.
Pretty soon 'lotta people are gonna swarm in here though.

Wish there was a way to get people to seek refuge in here without making things complicated.

[ .. ]

Why don't we do just that? I mean— I'll stay out here and search this place— make sure it stays safe, and you can guide people in here one by one.
Up to you. What do you think?

[Despite the chaos of the morning, it is less than half an hour before Temeraire's thoughts turn to the Amis. It is early yet, but the Amis have been known to drop in at the cafe for a quick breakfast before work, and if they were targeted--

Hurriedly he drops off the last of the kedan recovered from the cafe where he was taking his own breakfast, and without another word takes to the skies.

His heart plummets at the sight of the smoking wreck that comprises most of the front half of the Amis' cafe. There are voices shouting from within, indistinct, and he all but throws himself at the rubble, claws tearing at and shoving aside beams and fallen bricks.]

Enjolras? Combeferre! Are you there, are you all right--

[If nothing else, the sight of a bus-sized dragon calling one's name ought to jar one's senses, at least a little.]

I don't know yet. I was just at the fishing shop and something went off against the one wall. Nobody else was there at the time, just Baby Tooth and I.

From the air, it's dozens of buildings, maybe more.

[ There's something heavy in his voice, but it's not fear... no, something more familiar than that. Jack was around in Europe for both World Wars... and this is uncomfortably similar to bombings that took place then. He lowers his voice so that the children can't hear. ]

Can you keep their attention while I check here?
wintershepherd: (patient)

[personal profile] wintershepherd 2014-04-23 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
Jack stood to the side, having not wanted to draw attention to himself or away from Midii's story. It was very like the ones that he would tell the kids, with lots of description so they could imagine themselves in the middle of it and a setting that was divided enough from their current reality that it would be easy, and welcome, to temporarily forget what was going on just outside. Midii seemed to have a knack for it too.

Still can't hear properly.

[ The admission was wry and accompanied by a faint wince. He was dirty from the explosion, soot and dust from the collapsed wall but otherwise uninjured beyond a few scrapes and cuts, none of which seemed to be bleeding at all; the turtle's temperature was still moderate enough he hadn't started warming. ]

One of them went off against the wall of the fishing shop. No one else was inside but us though.

[ Baby Tooth chirped from her spot inside his hood, to convey that she was also all right. ]

It's like those satellite crashes all over again.

Not that she thought so.

When the story ended, she nodded over to one side, where Clara had set up some more food for the little ones. That was all the motivation they needed, and they scattered, leaving her alone in her seat on the floor. Almost.

"I know you're there. I can see you now, remember?" The corners of her lips tugged upward, but the smile was sad. "You should have taken over. Your stories are so much better than mine."

[Clara swallowed and then coughed. There was something sticking in her lungs. Like the smoke that she had inhaled when the bomb remained trapped. It makes her feel slightly nauseous. But she nodded and stood up straight, feeling the heaviness in his voice. She squeezed his hand again and then turned to the kids, reaching down to grab some of their hands.]

[Clara gave him a weak grin. Generally, she was quite good at making plans and taking authority. But now, her head felt twisted and strange and she was glad Bro had suggested something. A very good something.]

[The closer he got, the better look she could get at him. The ash and scratches marring his still cool skin. What little smile she might have had at seeing him against instantly melted away into a look of concern.]

Oh, no...

[She would risk it; maneuvering her way around the wind's steering, she guided herself until they were close enough for her to reach out and touch him. Trying to gauge how bad the injuries were. Wondering whether or not he would let her heal some of them. And his hearing....]

The fish shop... [That made it even worse. She knew what the place meant to him. Remembering to spare a loving pat on the head for poor Baby Tooth, thankful she was alright.] I'm so sorry. We'll get it fixed up again, I promise. When this is all over.

[Are you getting an attitude with her?] I've only been here putting out fires and saving frantic natives. I thought I heard something from Earth and Metal, but I haven't taken stock of anywhere else.

But the point was the bombs have been sitting here long enough that the sound of them just blended in with everything else. Who the hell knows when they were planted.

[ Jack tersely nodded his thanks to her and made a thorough check of the Center's perimeter and only when he was 100% certain there was no danger did he let himself breathe a small bit of relief. He came back inside and gave her a nod, letting her know that everything was all right. There hadn't been any other explosions in the distance this whole time so he hoped at least, that whatever attack this had been was done. Thankfully the kids were calm, though he could see their confusion and apprehension as they moved around the center. ]

A week or two ago, there might have been some sort of sarcastic quip about magic, because a week ago it was concept he had difficulty wrapping his brain around. But after hanging around the Endai, magic was no longer this weird thing.

Kaine added more webbing to make the makeshift container larger. You could never be too safe. "Just tell me what to do."
