Event | Console Crash Chaos | Phase One

Characters: ALL!
Date: April 17-30, 2014
Location: Keeliai
Situation: In an unexpected and bold attack by Malicant, the console system is completely shut down while food and supply locations all around the city are targeted by bombings.
Warnings/Rating: Explosions! Possible descriptions of related aftermaths, injuries, death, etc.

Shortly after eight in the morning of the 17th, the consoles experience a strange glitching effect. They'll display 15-20 seconds of static, interrupting anything being done on them at the time, before going utterly dark. No power, no signal, completely offline even to detection of their normal bio-mechanical signatures. No amount of energy influx will get them going again, though taking them apart (or trying to) will still cause them to melt into goo.

Within minutes of the console shutdown, explosions will begin ripping through Keeliai. The bombs are all timed as close to simultaneous as coordinating a city-wide attack can be, with many going off within seconds of each other, throwing the thriving morning rush into chaos. They tear into businesses and across public spaces, collapsing walls and blowing piles of debris into the streets. Places of high traffic quickly become evident as prime targets: marketplaces, hospitals, schools and cafes. The streets take only moments to fill with panicking, screaming kedan trying to pull their injured fellows out of harm's way. All told, the explosions take place across approximately a 10-minute stretch and their explosive yields are fairly high.

In addition to the bombs that cause destruction through their blasts, smaller bombs are going off around the city that specifically target food and water supplies, particularly where large stocks of it were kept such as grocers, produce markets, and the like. Rather than cause mass damage, these explosions spray out a fine mist of spores. Any perishables in their immediate area that are splattered develop an oozing black mold within minutes, eventually breaking down organic substances that turn to foul smelling rot and release their own mist, perpetuating the cycle. While skin contact with the mist doesn't harm, inhaling or ingesting it will produce shakes, fever, vomiting with a cumulative effect that has the potential to be fatal. It is much slower to infect the water supply but the sheer volume of rotting perishables will eventually put enough of the spores to taint water sources, approximately 6-8 hours after the original bombings.

The police force are out as soon as possible and within the hour are helping move the injured to safer locations with Evandau in charge, right in their midst and shoulder to shoulder with his subordinates. Not being stockpiles for any of the apparent targets, many of the Foreigner residences have been left undamaged and, wary of putting them in further danger by collecting large groups in public spaces, Foreigners may even be asked to take in a few individuals or a kedan family.

Despite the number of explosions, there are far more reports of injuries as opposed to casualties. The person or persons (or That Bad Guy) responsible for this were, for this attack at least, more intent on damage than on death.

Thanks.

[The takes the water bottle and takes another sip, only to end up coughing again. Once the fit finishes, she rubs a hand down her sternum. It's like there's something sticky in her lungs that she can't clear. She can feel whatever it is down there when she tries to breath.]

Must be from the smoke.

Even with the armor on, the strain of assisting in the rescue and recovery operations was beginning to wear on the wounds Gene had received during the initial bomb blast. He'd been lucky enough to be largely clear of any shrapnel and the blast itself, but he'd ended up with at least one rib that had felt like it had been cracked. Maybe by now it was broken with all of the activity. He wasn't sure, but it hurt like hell. He had a pretty high tolerance for pain, but he was also smart enough to realize that a broken rib or several would not make him any help to anybody.

Kind of difficult to save the world when you can't even do a simple side-twist, after all.

He'd shed the armor when nobody could see him, and waited several minutes to be sure nobody would connect its disappearance with his reappearance. Then he walked to the nearest makeshift clinic he'd seen. The cut above his eyebrow had reopened, dripping blood down his face, and now he was really beginning to feel every minor scrape and contusion he'd suffered in the blast. At the very least, he looked like hell, though maybe not quite so much as some of the others.

"It's Cassie. Or Stature." She points at her mask. "Whichever you prefer."

Once upon a time, it'd have been just the latter name. But she's registered, and her identity is pretty much public. And none of her friends from home whose identity is secret are here anymore, so... whatever.

"And I'll get right on that. If what I can do is needed in another area than where I am, just let me know." She squints over at him. "Are you all right?"

[ Was he always such a literal shield? Natasha nods, and then stands back up, nodding to a nearby kedan to take their charge, moving to the next one. ] It wouldn't surprise me. Any idea on what caused the explosions?

[ It was only technically her, but she's gotten used to people comparing people with, well, her. She's seen her video on the network, so she'll take the credit for it. Even if it is dubious. Natasha nods, and then smirks at Bucky slightly, raising an eyebrow. ]

Then he has no reason to refuse me, right?

By the time that Korra arrives on the scene the smoke has stopped billowing out of the crater that once housed the emergency department, Intensive Care Unit, and the floors unlucky enough to be above those.

For what it's worth the Pediatric Unit, Aang's favorite place to help out, is part of the hospital furthest from the most severe damage.

From Korra's vantage point above the ruined hospital it might be easy to spot out area's that have undergone Aang's influence. Small earthen tents now serve as secure spaces for patients with limited mobility to rest. Portions of the building that threaten to crumble under the now uneven distribution of weight are shored up with inelegant pillars of solid rock.

The smell of o-zone hangs heavy in the dust-riddled air.

[His eyes widen in shock at her tone. It's no-nonsense, it's authoritative, it's...resemblance to April's. He quickly enters the flat and quietly closes the door behind himself.

There's a small wince when she mentions tea, but he'll drink it regardless.]

(Shayera can only pour so much water on a burning building, and escort civilians to safety at the same time. It won't be long before the building will come crashing down on Saint Walker, and she curses under her breath at seeing everyone except him out of the fire and safe.

She's reaching the end of her rope here, and the supports are getting weaker by the second. Frantically, she calls out to him.)
Walker, this building won't hold much longer, you've got to get out!

(That... was actually a pretty good idea. Man, Shayera's rusty at this whole hero thing.) And I can send the injured to you. I just hope I don't wind up sending the injured back to you more damaged than before.

[ he waits patiently while she downs the ambrosia and lets the effects take place. while things getter better for annabeth, it certainly doesn't seem be doing the same for the city around them. he can feel the ground tremble from the other smaller bombs being set off and in the midst of the danger and chaos, he can feel the adrenaline running through his body.

he needs to act -- they need to act soon, before the situation gets worse around them. so when annabeth tells him of others still trapped inside the firm, he only gives a firm nod. ]

We'll get them out. [ he may not have the same types of power as his sister, but he'll do whatever he can. ]

Which way?

It's the perfect plan. I hope you don't, too.

[Germs? Oh yes, those little beings that carry disease now. Enjolras vaguely recalls being told of them at one point or another here, and he is frowning as he nods.]

And in case they try to bomb again, it would be better all of us who can assist the others out, to somewhere safe. Your plan sounds good. The fastest that we have.

[Here, Temeraire is getting a relieved smile.]

Then yes, we had better get started. Thank you.

It is only a shame I did not think to wear my harness today, but there is little we can do about that; if there are any spare tablecloths in the cafe, you may as well tear them up, to tie people onto my breastplate.

[Already he is crouching lower to the ground; the kedan woman they freed is conscious, at least, but her leg is sticking out at an unnatural angle, and only climbs aboard after a struggle.]
solo_patria: (sc 4: stubborn)

[personal profile] solo_patria 2014-04-30 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
What we do not need for immediate wound care, of course. The germs you mentioned ARE a problem, but I would also not have someone bleed out before we get them to a proper place.

[How many had bled out at the barricades, before their deaths?, he wonders, even as he moves on to grab a table cloth to begin tearing, making his way toward another bit of rubble where an arm is sticking out. How many more would bleed out here, before they received help? How many, and, should one of them not be him?

The things that Malicant had said come back to him, but thankfully, the task at hand is simple enough that it does not show on his face, and cannot affect his work here. Later, he will worry for it, but for now, there are more important, more immediate matters, he decides, as he tears away.]
dracobin: (uncertain)

[personal profile] dracobin 2014-04-30 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
Yes--yes, of course.

[Carefully he pulls at another chunk of debris, moving slowly so as not to jar his current passenger. Already his mind is buzzing with thoughts--there is no question as to who could have done this, as far as he is concerned, but that does not change the how of it, or the why. Simple chaos is one thing: this seems planned, for reasons more complicated than that.]

What of the other Amis? Were they with you? If the cafe was attacked, it can only be because our enemy intended to target all of you.
solo_patria: (canony: flag)

[personal profile] solo_patria 2014-04-30 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
Combeferre was here, and Eponine. They both seem all right. Eponine was escorting those who could go, out. I've not heard from, or seen the others so far.

[He's saying this with a small, worried frown.]

It has to be our enemy, yes, but it does make me wonder if he's struck anywhere else. If it was to be all of us, then there might be more evidence, in other sectors of the city. Bossuet's over in the Water Sector for one. I would hope that nothing has hit there. We will need to find that out, when we are done here.

[For now, there is work to be done, and no time to be spent in worrying idly, though Enjolras does, as he uncovers another patron of the cafe, attached to that arm he'd spotted before Temeraire had lifted it, and finds himself occupied in getting the kedan over to the dragon's side, where he can be secured.

Worry for the others, though he is certainly worried, must come later, he tells himself, focused on the task at hand. Even so, the thought feels like an empty pit growing in his stomach as he carefully makes a few strong knots that ought to hold.]

If anything has happened, well, the others will need help as well, no matter who they are. I would hope it is isolated, but just in case, I think we ought to check somehow. Perhaps we could try one of the devices later. Everyone will need to know what's happened at any rate.

Very well, Elizabeth Comstock-DeWitt, [Saint Walker repeats with a nod. It's something of a mouthful, but he's grown accustomed to using every name that every person has given him, and is liable to continue doing so until further corrected.]

And I am Saint Walker. Good luck, and do not hesitate to call out should you need any assistance whatsoever.
burnseternal: (spirit will not be broken)

[personal profile] burnseternal 2014-04-30 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
Then I will make haste! There is still another survivor here!

[Which is to say, Saint Walker has absolutely no intention of vacating the building until he's done all that he can to save the life inside. Who's to say that his own life is more valuable than a life of another?

Instead of running out, Saint Walker plows determinedly through the building until he reaches the survivor, hidden as she is behind a pile of debris. If he were a Green Lantern, it would be a small task to simply shove the pile aside, but his own powers are dwarfed by those of his brother Corps. He scarcely spares the creaking building another glance and instead shoves the debris aside in large, frantic armfuls.]

[She likes the sound of it. Elizabeth Comstock-DeWitt. It sounds better than just Elizabeth Comstock. She thinks she'll keep it.]

I will, I promise. I wish we'd met under better circumstances. But now, we have work to do.

But all of you meet here: very nearly everyone knows that. If he wished to kill all of you at once, it makes sense that he would plant a bomb here, where he could be certain of doing the most damage, rather than in your homes.

[He shakes his head.] I saw smoke rising from Water Sector, during my flight here, but it was not near the foreigner apartments. The clinic has been attacked, and some weapon-merchants I know in Fire, and there are other targets, too: but which ones precisely, and why they were attacked, I do not yet know.
solo_patria: (Default)

[personal profile] solo_patria 2014-04-30 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
It does seem like a working theory, at that. He certainly has no qualms about being rid of bystanders, as demonstrated before. This place has become something like a home. It stands to reason, even those of us who had not died would be disheartened by this.

But smoke from there...and the Clinic itself? This may be larger scale than us at that rate. The clinic is chancy, less of a sure thing than here. And would harm far more people. I suppose what remains, later on, is the actual intent. And if we were the targets, finding ways to keep others safe from those effects.

My guess is bombs.

[Yes Natasha, the sass is intentional.]

I haven't pinpointed the origin of the explosions yet, but considering they all went off at once, I'm going to go ahead and state the obvious and say it's an organised attack.

You'd still be here wondering what caused the big boom.

[He pauses, glancing about for a moment.]

If we're able to find the remnants of one of the bombs, Stark might be able to provide some insight. It's probably safe to assume who's behind all of it though.
vdova: (Default)

[personal profile] vdova 2014-04-30 05:06 am (UTC)(link)
[ Natasha almost rolls her eyes. Almost. She straightens a little when he gets serious, though, crossing her arms and nodding. ] If it's crude enough, I might even be able to figure out what at least went into making them, so we have some kind of knowledge of where they might have came from.

[ Pause. ]

But you're probably right. If it's anyone at all, it's He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named.
