OPEN | Tonight the foxes hunt the hounds

Characters: Zatanna & Open
Date: Early September
Location: Mu-Hao to start, though mostly just around Keelai
Situation: Revenge is a dish best served cold; as such, Zatanna enlists her favorite partner in crime to get back at Wan before making a run for it. In the meantime, catching up with some of the current Turtle population.

Warnings/Rating: None

She wasn't entirely sure when a single challenge had turned into an all-out prank war, but she was pretty sure it had something to do with Wan using his then-secret nature of technically-Korra-even-though-not-actually-Korra to get past her room Wards. Rude.

It was perfect. He had snuck into her room, so she would simply keep him out of his. For a little while, anyway. Jack had been all too eager to help her, because of course he was. Setup took minutes. They only had to wait until he was long gone for the morning. A thick block of ice covering his door, and a second blocking the window. He was, in essence, frozen out of his room until the ice melted.

From there, she quickly decided a clean escape while she had the chance was best. She would return to the scene of the crime later, for sure, but in the meantime, she was suddenly up for a nice, long stroll around the city.

And if someone just so happened to catch her in yet another fit of laughter, well...depending upon who it was, she might be up for explaining over a milkshake. Preferably chocolate. With extra whipped cream.

She'd earned it, after all.

[Wan hadn't realized Jack ran the center. He just thought the spirit worked there and some kedan ran it.]

You make it sound like there's no one else working there right now. Just you and him.

Pretty much, yeah.

[Which explained his exhaustion as well.]

Oh.

[Wan's eyes widened and he felt like he'd just been punched in the gut from the sudden guilt.]

I didn't know that. Do you... does he... I mean... I could help maybe?

[Wan, stop, you literally have no reason to feel guilty over this.]

I certainly wouldn't mind.

And if Jack protests for some unfathomable reason, I can always just point out that with someone else to cover, we might have a chance of going out together more often. [Incentive!]

[He will feel guilty for assuming Jack's staying out of the house so much was because he didn't like Wan. If that's not allowed, he will find another reason to feel guilty. Optimism and guilt. Those are his things.]

Don't you guys see each other most of the time already? How could you go out more often unless you spent all your free time with each other?

[Like they don't already]

That's different. That's work.

I don't see how working with a friend makes spending time with them any different.

[Hello Zatanna. This is a man who has never been on a date in his life.]

[Le shrug.]

[That explains so much.]

Maybe because Jack's not just my friend. We've been dating for months.

[Wan's mouth opened and he lifted a finger to say something. But shut it before any words came out as he processed that new information. Jack and Zatanna were 'dating'. That meant they were involved with each other. Romantically.

When he next opened his mouth to speak, he stuck his foot firmly inside it.]

But you're a human and he's a spirit. You can't date.

[She went from 0 to Are-You-Kidding-Me in less than a second.]

Says who?

Because you're... not... the same. You're a human. He's a spirit. It... it doesn't work.

[Yeah. Sure make him have to defend that position. Cheater.]

[He's just lucky the defense sounds so pathetically ridiculous, she can't even bring herself to threaten to hex him out the window. Through the ice.]

Well, it's worked just fine for us.

But if you can date, then you can get married! And married people have babies! What if you have a baby? How would that even work?!

[It took maybe half a second for it to sink in. Really sink in.]

[Wan would notice the exact moment because her eyes went WIDE, and her drop dropped.]

...WHAT?

Babies! If you're dating him, then you like him enough to want to get married and have babies!

[Because he's from a time period where people who actually dated did it as part of a formal courtship that families had to approve. Casual dating is not something he's familiar with. Casual sex, yeah. Dating? No.]

Spirits and humans having babies isn't something that's possible! Or-

I didn't think it was. Is it?!

Who said anything about babies?!

[Her voice might have risen by a full octave at that point, nearly choking on the 'b' word. Wan, no. Wan, what even.]

I'm sixteen! And he's...okay, he's older than sixteen, but that's not the point!

What do your ages have to do with it? You're both old enough! That's the point of dating. To find someone to marry and have kids with.

N-no!

[Congratulations, Wan. You might have broken her. A little. ...a lot.]

It's...we just want to be together. I like him. He likes me. No babies. He's got enough kids hanging around him as it is.

[What was forming a coherent thought anymore.]

Besides...I'm not really the marrying type. Even if I were old enough. Which I'm not.

Yes you are! Humans get married at sixteen all the time! What's the point of dating if that's not the plan? Just be together!

[He paused then waved his hands.]

No! I mean, you can't! It's... humans and spirits they.. it's not-

[Ugh. He was too worked up at this point to be very coherent himself.]

Look! It's just not done!

[And then he froze. Those were Aye-Aye's words about humans and spirits living together. He could argue that it had never been done before, but those were the Air Lion Turtle's words. And his own response to both had be to point out that just because it hadn't been, didn't mean that it couldn't be.

If it was possible for a spirit to bond forever with a human soul, then why couldn't a human and spirit just want to be together for the sake of being together?

Wan's shoulders shook a little and he leaned into the wall, his arms coming up to wrap around him as he took a deep breath. His voice was softer, sadder, when he next spoke.]

Will you please let me into my room?

[Her face felt flushed. Is this what people who got embarassed felt like? Because she's not entirely sure she liked the feeling. It was uncomfortable. It was awwkard. And she still wasn't fully thinking straight.]

That's what we're--

[But then Wan cut himself off, as if realizing his own contradiction. He wasn't making any sense either, and for the life of her, Zatanna couldn't figure out why this was such a big deal to him. Was he really that offended at the thought of her and Jack being together? Was he really going to start making their lives difficult just because they were a couple?]

[Whether it was because of the spirit-human thing, or because she said she didn't want to get married, or any combination of whatever they were still arguing over...all she knew was that the longer he spoke...insisted...the more upset she was getting.]

Fine.

[She wanted to be annoyed or even angry at him, but all she could manage was a half-hearted 'fine' before waving a dismissive hand in the air before spinning on her heels to walk away. Out of the room. Out of the house. Away from him and his arguments that she didn't want to hear.]

[The sound of water hitting ground would be heard. He could clean it up himself. Right then, she didn't care.]

[He did clean up the water, but he only did enough to get keep it from soaking in and ruining the wood. Once it was done, he left through the window - leaving that open for the animals of the area to come back in - and flew himself off to the Turtle's Head. He needed that calm because he wasn't sure he'd be able to get it otherwise.

Following this, Wan would do his best to avoid Zatanna directly. At least until he figured out how to apologize to her. That could take a while.]
