Yeah, that's probably the best way to do it.

unenthusiastic about the prospect.]
I guess I could write a letter, or something.
[That'll be the safest bet. Then he won't have to worry about his tone of voice sounding insincere.
That doesn't make him any more eager to do it, though.]
I've never had to write an apology letter before.
