gistful: (why give up?)

"That was the name Dante gave me, yes," Anton said simply. He hadn't spoken directly to Virgil after his initial arrival, but he had observed that the man preferred to call himself by another name; the fact that he took back the name Dante had given said more about his changed state of mind than anything else.

Anton held up the package under his arm. "You requested Dante's sword." It had felt vaguely surreal, carrying it around; the only other time Anton had touched it had been to impale Dante upon it while Anton was combined with his gist. "But what I wished to speak to you about was your reason for feeling you're no longer worthy of the Hotel's protections."

Anton didn't usually make others' business his own, but the note had spoken of a dramatic change in the manner of a man withdrawing out of either guilt or misplaced duty. Every now and then, even Anton could be sentimental. Dante's reaction to Vergil's arrival spoke of a love that obliged Anton to make sure Vergil was alright in Dante's absence.
