While Tony is gone, Gene changes into his own new clothes, but the act of doing so doesn't make him feel any better. He stil feels like someone reached inside him with a melon baller and scooped out his soul by teaspoons.

The door shutting after Tony comes back souds awfully final, and Gene lets the silence linger just a bit after the question.

"I've had better days," he says in a low tone, a sort of grim not-really humor suffusing his words. "You?"
