Anton wasn't unaccustomed to being observed, and though he noticed it he didn't call attention to Gene until Gene's observation reached an unusual length of time. At that point Anton had paused to wash some of the cups, so he looked up and directly at Gene.

"Would you like me to wash your mug for you?" he asked, and inclined his head toward the cauldron. "You may take another, if you wish."
