[EVENT|4TH WALL] THE NEWCOMERS’ ARRIVAL | APRIL 15-22

Characters: ALL and plus ones.
Date: April 15-22 2015 (2016 in-game)
Location: Farmlands outside the city walls, but this log can also be used for locations within the city.
Situation: Spring planting - fourth wall event, week one!
Warnings/Rating: Add warnings as needed.

The days for the festival dawn sunny if a bit chilly, but the air is clear and the soggy ground has dried enough that there isn’t too much mud in the lanes between fields and homesteads. The broad dirt path to the Woodsmen’s land leads past the tram-line construction, lined with waving ribbons on sticks along the sides. The Woodsmen’s territory circles the city, separated from the city’s walls by five hundred yards of neutral land.

The festival’s central area is Liangken’s Clearing, and this is where the festival will begin and end each day. Liangken is an ancient tree, among the oldest on the turtle’s back. Though it doesn’t flower or bear much in the way of leaves anymore, the kedan have cultivated it carefully and now it’s an excellent representation for the revitalisation of old wisdom.

The lanes between the fields and homesteads will house the stalls, contests and walking areas. The Woodsmen will be keeping an eye on these to prevent anyone from walking off the marked paths. The homesteads provide ‘hotspots’ in among the lanes and fields, with Woodsmen families lending their yards to the comfort and entertainment of their guests.

In general, the Woodsmen are a taciturn, soft-spoken lot who nevertheless take great pride in their work. Their lands are all but sacred -- they accept no attitude, no trespassing, no attempts to thwart their authority. This causes some noticeable tension with the Snakes, who are accustomed to being the sole enforcers within the city; but though there may be some ill tempers and raised voices, at no point will anyone come to blows. It’s hard to argue with someone built like a brick wall and carrying sharp farm implements.

The Woodsmen are a touch anxious about having strangers on their land and this shows in them being overly officious or bossy, but at the same time their pride shows clearly and they are eager to show off the state of their lands, their greenhouses, and their farming processes -- practically without being asked. The residents of Keeliai tend to think of the Woodsmen as ‘cowards’, and the Woodsmen are taking this opportunity to prove themselves otherwise with feats of strength and tall tales.

Due to the farmers’ hours of “early to bed and early to rise”, the festival ends in the early evening at sundown, but begins again before dawn -- usually by greeting the sun with a song.

"Well..." Tony clears his throat and folds his hands on the table in front of him. Shit's about to get real, Howard.

"For starters, we're actually riding on a giant turtle. A huge, continent-sized turtle. And before you say you don't believe me, I can take you up to the head to show you. Two: magic is real, here. Actual magic, not just advanced technology like the rings. It's sort of like mutant powers, except the rules and limits and techniques that work like... well, fantasy magic. And there's a ton of different kinds, because there's so many people from different universes. There's one woman who can transform into a huge wolf, and there's a guy who's a skeleton. All the time. A walking skeleton in a suit. There's a few people who control elements - the water, fire, air and earth kind of elements. That sort of stuff. So... You're probably going to see a lot of weirdness going on." Long story short. "It's normal. Ish." Normal has lost a lot of its meaning for Tony, at this point.

He doesn't respond right away, almost like he didn't hear her at first.
Mostly...because, well, he kind of missed it.

It's not just the arrow that's distracting him, it's the girl's eyes. She has brown eyes. Aang's never seen an Air Nomad with brown eyes. Or one wearing an outfit quite like the one she's wearing.

"....what? Oh!" he blushes slightly.
"I was coming here with, uh..."

How best to say, my girlfriend and our adult son?

"Some friends!" he says brightly.
A little too brightly. Hi Jinora, your grandfather is a horrible liar. Even when he's merely lying by omission.
spirity: (14)

[personal profile] spirity 2015-04-23 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
Jinora brushes her hair behind her ear in a nervous gesture, completely aware that she's being closely observed. She raises an eyebrow at his obvious lie, but doesn't push it.

"Oh. Can I wait with you?"

[personal profile] clarkesthirdlaw 2015-04-23 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
Howard blinks. Once.

Yeah, okay, that's a lot to take in. He has questions. He has so many questions. And he has no idea where to start.

Okay, he has one. "She transforms into a large wolf? Larger than her human form? Where does the extra mass come from?"

Dammit, Howard.
highprofilerichkid: (what a dork)

[personal profile] highprofilerichkid 2015-04-23 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
Tony laughs. "I'd love to know. A pocket dimension? The magic users aren't great at explaining their magic in scientific terms. The only ones I've gotten anything useful out of are China and Anton. They do magic by drawing symbols - they call them sigils. It's pretty unique because anyone can do it, as long as they know how to draw the sigils properly, so I've been able to do some experimenting. Here, check this out—"

He pulls a pencil stub out of his pocket and carefully scratches the simplest sigil for 'light' onto the table. When he draws the last line, the sigil starts to glow. Not dramatically, since he hadn't put any enhancing modifiers on it, but enough to be noticeable, even in the bright sunlight.

[personal profile] clarkesthirdlaw 2015-04-23 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
Okay.

Well.

That's not something you see every day.

Howard stares at the sigil, practically unable to comprehend what he's seeing. He's speechless for only a moment, though, and launches into questions. "Is the order of the strokes important or just the final shape? Show me again, slowly, I want to see. It looks like circuitry."
bigdamnhiro: (and then i said)

[personal profile] bigdamnhiro 2015-04-23 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
Hiro has this sinking feeling in the pit of his stomach. Yeah, okay, so that's exactly what he'd thought too when Tadashi had showed up at his hotel room, but it's been long enough now that he thinks, he's just about certain, even with the nagging doubts and worries, that his living, breathing brother is real and not just a hallucination.

"Three fingers, Aunt Cass," he insists stubbornly, taking her wrist and tugging her hand gently away from his forehead. "I told you, I'm fine. And yeah, I thought I was imagining things at first, too, but he's real. I'm not making this up. Time does weird things, here, and sometimes people you thought were gone...they come back."

[personal profile] 12goingon113 2015-04-23 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
Unsure of what else to say, Aang says, "Okay."

He has so many questions fighting to get out, but the first successful one to do so just so happens to be the one he'd asked Tenzin.

"Sooooo which temple are you from?"
highprofilerichkid: (cool!! :D)

[personal profile] highprofilerichkid 2015-04-23 04:15 am (UTC)(link)
"How the components relate to each other is more important than the final shape." Howard's reaction is almost identical to what Tony's had been. Tony grins, thrilled to have something like this to share with his dad; to discuss what he's learned with someone who will get it in the same way he does. "It's all about the dynamics of the structure. See?" He draws the sigil again, more slowly, then follows it with a similar one. This one is looser and sketchier than the first two, but lights up just the same.

"It is a lot like a circuit - you can shift the parts around a lot, and as long as things still connect up in the right way, in the right direction and order, it'll still work. The tough thing to wrap your head around is that the sigils are a language. They're all about concepts. Writing them is sort of like wiring a circuit, but putting them together to actually do anything useful is more like... telling a story, almost. It's weird. I'm not great at it yet, but Anton runs his whole interdimensional hotel on them."
clarkesthirdlaw: (thinkin' the thinky thinks)

[personal profile] clarkesthirdlaw 2015-04-23 04:23 am (UTC)(link)
Howard watches his son demonstrate, and can't help but grin. It's remarkable, just how much Tony has to teach him, and how much he's learned here already.

"I think I see," he says, nodding. "It's like you're programming. Only instead of on a computer, it's the world. You're telling the world what to do, and it...does it."

His hand goes to his mouth, thinking. If he knew more, he's sure he could put them together, chain them to tell a story like Tony had said. After all, what's programming but telling a story, telling the system what you want it to do, and how and when and why? These sigils seem to work the same way, for the world. The world!

Oh, the possibilities.

Logic and reason were invaluable skills, surely; Thomas wouldn't dream of denying that. The Scientific Method was a problem-solving tool, designed to lay out a clear path to a solution with minimal distraction or confusion.

Yet that couldn't be the only tool at one's disposal. The logical path was clear and simple, but narrow and flat. There was no room for distraction, yet no room for exploration. Logic was a narrative of the Universe as it it's understood, but there was always a time and a place to step away from that narrative to explore what the Universe could be. To dismiss even the most ludicrous possibility as being illogical was to pass an opportunity to discover something new and wonderful.

There was a reason Tom made sure to program his more advanced AIs with thoughts and emotions of their own, why he designed his children to love, fear, and wonder. After all, what would drive humanity to search for answers if humanity weren't so naturally curious?

And what's more, what's the point of a solution devoid of meaning? Logic will surely deduce an answer eventually, but one couldn't measure and deduce the beauty and wonder of understanding what you've discovered. Logic and reason may give you answers, but they'd never give you joy.

Thomas's smile broadened and he nodded. "I'm sure we will." In the meantime, though, best to get to know this other fine mind with whom he's made acquaintance. He offered a hand in greeting. "Doctor Thomas Light."

"...Well. That certainly complicates matters."

His entire demeanor tensed. He was trying to keep his cool, really, he was; He was an airbender, after all. Going with the flow was how he rolled.

He stiffly stroked his beard again. See how with the flow he is?

"I don't suppose I've stumbled into the Spirit World?"

"Then I'll be certain to find you again, but I'm getting ahead of myself." He looked suddenly thoughtful. "I suppose I need to find a way to get established, first. I can't exactly continue my research on the street."

"Heh. You have no idea."

He said it like an inside joke... which it was, alien powers and all. But moves on from that thought without elaboration. "Bummer I didn't bring a CD or something with me. Not that I think they'd have anything around to play it on. I'd probably have to build it myself."

"Thus far, everything's been interesting," Tenzin muses, but there's clear frustration in his voice. "But none of it has been useful. Everything I learn just raises more questions."

Tenzin is about to answer Katara's question when Aang makes his grand escape. Tenzin's eyes widen for a moment before his expression twists into a small scowl of frustration. It's gone quickly, though, and he gently scoops Katara into his arms, looking down at her, bemused.

"For starters," he says dryly, glancing back in Aang's direction, "my brother, Bumi, is a lot like that."

And with that he launches into the air, calling upon the currents to safely guide and lead them along Aang's path. The wind rushes past them as Tenzin picks up speed, all but running in the air itself and slowly but surely catching up to his father.

...How funny, Tenzin thought to himself without a hint of humor, that this is exactly how he'd greeted Aang.

That's his first thought, anyway. His second thought is realizing that this young man is a friend of Aang's. This young man, with a scar just like --

"--Lord Zuko?"

The title tumbles from his mouth the moment it enters his mind. It would make sense -- well, whatever counted for sense in this bizarre place -- if he's already met a child version of his parents, that could also mean...

He takes a step closer, eyes wide as he inspects the boy, earlier criticism forgotten. Could it be?

Yeager just sits up and props his chin on his hand. See, look, he's behaving.

"Better than a giant beetle~" .... Heracles. Get it?

... Did they really expect him to contribute something useful to this- He's soaking up the information to compare it to what he can get later when he is hopefully out of reach of Rita and Yuri.

There’s so much bustle around the stalls that Korra’s just trying to make sure she doesn’t bump into anyone too hard. When she gets a ‘road block’ consisting of a small group of kedan, she crosses her arms and impatiently waits. Looking behind to see who else is suffering the hold up completely catches her off guard.

"Mike…!" Not only was he here again, or has been since Malicant’s defeat, but he’s also out during the day. Either way she hugs the short turtle. "Didn’t think I’d get the chance to see you again."
alphatar: (Hug tiemz)

[personal profile] alphatar 2015-04-23 06:19 am (UTC)(link)
"Zee?" Not only was she surprised to hear her, but seeing her threw Korra off at first. "You didn’t get sent home either!" Korra made her way over to her long time friend to give her a hug. After all, she didn't think there'd be another chance for them to meet.

"And you’re- wait, how old are you now?" She was used to the younger not!sister she had survived Keeliai with, now they were even closer in age group from the look of it.
alphatar: (Hug Smiley Eyes Senna)

[personal profile] alphatar 2015-04-23 06:19 am (UTC)(link)
The useless circle of talking to a kedan, trying to get what all happened while she was apparently gone was thankfully broken up when Korra heard her name. But what made her spin around on the spot was the person that voice belonged to.

"Katara?" Korra had half dreaded who she wouldn’t find in Keeliai, and her young waterbending master was one of them. But here she was and the tightness only reminded her that she had obviously been gone much longer from her than she had been from Korra. "Hey," she wrapped her arms around her in a snug embrace of her own, unable to stop the content smile that was forming on her face. "I missed you too. Sorry it’s been so long for you." The very state of the city had told her it had at least been a year, probably more since Eva sent many home.

"Soul gem?" Korra ducked her head just a little as if to make sure she was hearing him right. But she wasn’t in complete disbelief of it, not after all she’d been through on the turtle. "No, nothing I’ve heard of before. Do Aang and Wan have one?" Maybe it was an Avatar thing. The other two previous incarnations were here, she could feel those subtle tugs and Zuko telling her Wan was here confirmed it.

As it is, she was still trying to wrap her head around Zuko being older now. "I was just outside the city a few hours ago. But everything’s off. How long has it been here?"

"I see."

Well, that's just what he's expected. The old guy doesn't understand anything more about this place than Law does, after all. But still, it won't hurt to ask a few questions.

"If my theory is right, you've suddenly found yourself here, without planning to do so... is that right? I hope you weren't in the middle of anything urgent."
