[EVENT|4TH WALL] THE NEWCOMERS’ ARRIVAL | APRIL 15-22

Characters: ALL and plus ones.
Date: April 15-22 2015 (2016 in-game)
Location: Farmlands outside the city walls, but this log can also be used for locations within the city.
Situation: Spring planting - fourth wall event, week one!
Warnings/Rating: Add warnings as needed.

The days for the festival dawn sunny if a bit chilly, but the air is clear and the soggy ground has dried enough that there isn’t too much mud in the lanes between fields and homesteads. The broad dirt path to the Woodsmen’s land leads past the tram-line construction, lined with waving ribbons on sticks along the sides. The Woodsmen’s territory circles the city, separated from the city’s walls by five hundred yards of neutral land.

The festival’s central area is Liangken’s Clearing, and this is where the festival will begin and end each day. Liangken is an ancient tree, among the oldest on the turtle’s back. Though it doesn’t flower or bear much in the way of leaves anymore, the kedan have cultivated it carefully and now it’s an excellent representation for the revitalisation of old wisdom.

The lanes between the fields and homesteads will house the stalls, contests and walking areas. The Woodsmen will be keeping an eye on these to prevent anyone from walking off the marked paths. The homesteads provide ‘hotspots’ in among the lanes and fields, with Woodsmen families lending their yards to the comfort and entertainment of their guests.

In general, the Woodsmen are a taciturn, soft-spoken lot who nevertheless take great pride in their work. Their lands are all but sacred -- they accept no attitude, no trespassing, no attempts to thwart their authority. This causes some noticeable tension with the Snakes, who are accustomed to being the sole enforcers within the city; but though there may be some ill tempers and raised voices, at no point will anyone come to blows. It’s hard to argue with someone built like a brick wall and carrying sharp farm implements.

The Woodsmen are a touch anxious about having strangers on their land and this shows in them being overly officious or bossy, but at the same time their pride shows clearly and they are eager to show off the state of their lands, their greenhouses, and their farming processes -- practically without being asked. The residents of Keeliai tend to think of the Woodsmen as ‘cowards’, and the Woodsmen are taking this opportunity to prove themselves otherwise with feats of strength and tall tales.

Due to the farmers’ hours of “early to bed and early to rise”, the festival ends in the early evening at sundown, but begins again before dawn -- usually by greeting the sun with a song.

"Some dragons, don't eat people," Robin had to note. "Granted, some do. Species isn't a marker for good or evil. Whatever this was, it sounds bad, though."

Waking up in strange places with no clue how one got there and possibly without important memories was a family talent. Guess who was also listening to the story and who noticed a very familiar coat in the crowd as she was leaving. "Morgan? Is that you?"

"No, he's—" Tony grimaces, and rubs a hand over his face and through his hair. "It's... things are different here. He's not like what he used to be. He's been here even longer than I have, and... he's trying really hard to be a better person. He's a good guy, now, Dad."

"That's impossible," Howard says bluntly, but it's clear he's operating on emotion here. He'd spent more time with Gene than anyone (well, not anymore) and he knew just what that boy was capable of. He'd seen the hurting child, true...but he'd also seen the cruel, calculating mastermind, the ruthless would-be ruler in pursuit of the Makluan rings. He'd had to focus on that part of him, he'd had to quash any sympathy he might have had for the lost and broken child, just his son's age; bright and talented, but a twisted mirror of Tony, all that potential used for scheming and evil.

"He didn't seem interested in changing at all. Not as long as I knew him, not in all the time I spent as his prisoner."
highprofilerichkid: (why is this happening to me)

[personal profile] highprofilerichkid 2015-04-25 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Tony puts his head in his hands and sighs. "I know you don't have any reason to believe it, but I've been here with him for more than a year; I've seen him change. When he saw what happened with the Makluans, he... it made him realize how much he'd messed up. He doesn't want to make the same mistakes anymore. He's been though a lot, here, trying to do that. To be better."

Tony looks up at his dad. He hopes Howard will hear him out. He hopes he'll be willing to listen and give Gene a chance. He can't leave Gene, after everything they've been through, and he can't hide their relationship from Howard forever. If this all blows up and Howard refuses to even try to reconcile with Gene... Tony's not sure how he'll deal with that.

Is this situation more than a little strange? Yes. Is she going to need some ice cream and Excedrin when they get back home? Definitely.

Does she stop for one second to consider that maybe Hiro's right, that Tadashi might be alive in this place, wherever it is? Absolutely not.

As much as she's been surrounded by geniuses for the last decade of her life, and as weird as things have gotten at times, people don't come back from the dead. No matter how badly an aunt or a brother might wish for it... or a sister, going back a few years more. She smiles sadly at him, grips his shoulders lightly and tries to remember if she still has the numbers for the therapists that were recommended after the funeral. The drawer of her nightstand, maybe. She's fairly certain she didn't throw them away.

"We need to figure out how to get home, sweetie. Everything will be fine. It'll be better once we get home."

Howard looks askance at his son. He knew what the crimson ring could do, and isn't ruling out that Gene's done...something...with it to Tony. (Incidentally, Howard is both correct and not even wrong.)

"That snake plays a long game, as you know," Howard says darkly - but he also knows Tony's been here far longer than he has, and he wants to believe Gene has the capacity to change. He just isn't optimistic enough to trust that he actually can. And it's a lot to take in, the idea that someone he saw a week ago, who threatened to kill him, has been here for years and has turned his life around.

Gene could have killed him, could have rewritten history so he'd never existed, could have disintegrated him with a thought as easily as he'd disintegrated the dampening rifle. He hadn't, which had honestly kept Howard up at night. Maybe he can be different. Maybe he can be better. Maybe there's some humanity left in that snake after all.

"Do you trust that he's changed? Do you trust him?" He suddenly looks alarmed, thinking. "And if he saw the Makluans - Tony, does he have the rings?"

Mostly China avoids crowds, if only because the disruption and the attention are more trouble than they're actually worth. So she's avoiding the main press of people along the stalls, and also avoiding the groups of children in general in favor of paying attention to the Liangken, and the stories being told.

It really doesn't do to ignore fairy tales just because they're ostensibly fictional, after all. The sheer number of legends she's run into in the last few years alone are proof of that. She doesn't have a notebook or anything in hand, but her air is one of thoughtful attention, and her focus is for once not on the people around her but more on that which she's hearing. When she's ascertained she can get no more out of the kedan she's talking to, China goes back to looking at the tree and sidestepping small children with some little amount of annoyance.

"Foreigner. Just decided to take a trip to the shore, and now I'm walking back. Yourself?" And was discovering she wasn't in as good of a shape as she thought. While she'd gotten regular exercise and often was walking during her job, there was a difference to walking all day. Good thing she'd had her work shoes -- her feet weren't as good at long-distance walking as human feet.

That's not what I meant, he's about to say, but it answers his next question anyway, so he nods appreciatively. "Thank you."

He steps closer and offers a small bow. "As it stands, it certainly wouldn't hurt to get to know each other in the meantime. My name is Tenzin."

"North," Tom said, meeting the firm grip with one of his own, though he couldn't begin to match North's strength. "The pleasure is all mine."

And it was, really. As Tom aged, he found himself and his own comrades had been slowing down, wearing out little by little. But North, despite his apparent age, had seemingly boundless energy in every move and word, and it seemed that spark was catching. Why, Tom felt years younger just talking to him!

"So tell me, North, what is it that you do back home?"

Kevin hadn't been expecting an actual response to his question, but there it was. He turns, looking down at the girl in red and yellow with the tattoo on her forehead. He raises his eyebrows at the sight, then gives a lopsided smirk.

"Retired? Goodness, no. I'm the only Airbending master in the world; Someone needs to be here to pass the art along to my children." He straightened his robes, turning his nose up bit in pride, smiling. "I couldn't possibly retire until at least one of my children made Master, and even then they'd still need my guidance."

He glances around, frowning. "And no time for festivities, either. Not now, until I get more information about what on Earth is going on."

"'Course not. Under normal circumstances I can find a high-focus wide-point plasma rifle and let that do the talking for me."

No, actually, it usually was his fists. But Kevin's got enough ego issues that proving himself to some dumb kid is somehow on his list of priorities.

To be honest, Krei has had little to no interest in the festival so far. He's been absorbed in his new job, finally in his element again and trying to get settled in the city--he would still rather be in San Fransokyo if he were given the choice, but as no one's bothered to offer that choice, he might as well make the best of it.

That "making the best of it" doesn't necessarily extend to things like planting festivals and masses of small children, however.

Still, it could be worse. It's terribly rural and not really his speed, but it's public and there are enough people around that he's pretty sure he's safe for the time being. Callaghan wouldn't dare pull anything with this many witnesses around, not even with the advantage of his microbots.

...would he?

Alistair's lost in thought, worried more about other times and places than this one, and suddenly having a gaggle of children passing around him like a flow of water means that he very nearly runs smack into the woman who's also been mobbed. He manages to avoid a collision, thankfully, but it's a close enough call that he finds himself smiling and apologizing nonetheless.

"I'm so sorry. It's a bit like an obstacle course, isn't it?"

Cripes, he turns his back for a minute to get his own rice and veggie bowl and Hiro's already run off.

With his own lunch in hand, Tadashi takes a few steps into the crowd and scans around for his little brother (not an easy task considering Hiro's height), calling out once or twice, much to the annoyance of some of the nearest kedan. He blends in a little better than he used to, wearing the local's clothes (except for that hat of his, gotta keep the hat on) and doing his best to respect their customs, but he's still pretty easy to pick out of a crowd.

He's looking around for a few minutes before said crowd parts and he finally spots a familiar head of unruly black hair.

"Hiro!"

He's already making a beeline for Hiro when he realizes that his brother isn't standing alone. He's close to someone else, obviously talking. Someone who becomes rather more familiar as he draws closer to the pair. He stops about ten feet away, blinking in confusion and growing excitement as his mind adjusts. He doesn't spend very much time looking for people from home. That he and Hiro are both here already is apparently some sort of statistical anomaly (and that's not even counting Professor Callaghan), so the chances of anyone else were pretty slim, but that's...

Yeah, it has to be.

"Aunt Cass?"

Initially China's fingers twitch toward her palms, but at the sound of the apology she relaxes a little. She steps back, out of the way of the flock of children-- mercifully, they seem focused on their games, and she is not subjected to any kedan children clinging to her ankles. "It is," she agrees, eying the man who spoke. Foreigner, almost certainly, but not one she's spoken to.

She will say this for living at the Hotel: it meant she could keep an eye on the newcomers without much effort. Now she has to work at it a little harder. "I wouldn't have come out at all, but apparently as an event it's a shame to miss this one," she adds, gesturing to the tree rather than the swarms of people.

Too scaly to be a cat, though she didn't move like a reptile. "A Raksura," Jade said. "From the Forest Reaches." She didn't go into details about the different sorts of Raksura. "Yourself?"

Stark Industries - April 17th

Thomas' experience in Keelai has been a whirlwind of emotions and experiences, and he's not sure how he's going to keep track of it all. For the moment, though, he's taking it one step at a time; And today's step is finally making it to that Stark Industries he's heard so much about.

Of course, once he's there, he's not sure where to start. Back home, he's so used to being one of the top names in science and robotics, that starting from the bottom again is... well, he's not sure how to do it.

Thomas stands in the lobby, looking unsure.
