[EVENT|4TH WALL] THE NEWCOMERS’ ARRIVAL | APRIL 15-22

Characters: ALL and plus ones.
Date: April 15-22 2015 (2016 in-game)
Location: Farmlands outside the city walls, but this log can also be used for locations within the city.
Situation: Spring planting - fourth wall event, week one!
Warnings/Rating: Add warnings as needed.

The days for the festival dawn sunny if a bit chilly, but the air is clear and the soggy ground has dried enough that there isn’t too much mud in the lanes between fields and homesteads. The broad dirt path to the Woodsmen’s land leads past the tram-line construction, lined with waving ribbons on sticks along the sides. The Woodsmen’s territory circles the city, separated from the city’s walls by five hundred yards of neutral land.

The festival’s central area is Liangken’s Clearing, and this is where the festival will begin and end each day. Liangken is an ancient tree, among the oldest on the turtle’s back. Though it doesn’t flower or bear much in the way of leaves anymore, the kedan have cultivated it carefully and now it’s an excellent representation for the revitalisation of old wisdom.

The lanes between the fields and homesteads will house the stalls, contests and walking areas. The Woodsmen will be keeping an eye on these to prevent anyone from walking off the marked paths. The homesteads provide ‘hotspots’ in among the lanes and fields, with Woodsmen families lending their yards to the comfort and entertainment of their guests.

In general, the Woodsmen are a taciturn, soft-spoken lot who nevertheless take great pride in their work. Their lands are all but sacred -- they accept no attitude, no trespassing, no attempts to thwart their authority. This causes some noticeable tension with the Snakes, who are accustomed to being the sole enforcers within the city; but though there may be some ill tempers and raised voices, at no point will anyone come to blows. It’s hard to argue with someone built like a brick wall and carrying sharp farm implements.

The Woodsmen are a touch anxious about having strangers on their land and this shows in them being overly officious or bossy, but at the same time their pride shows clearly and they are eager to show off the state of their lands, their greenhouses, and their farming processes -- practically without being asked. The residents of Keeliai tend to think of the Woodsmen as ‘cowards’, and the Woodsmen are taking this opportunity to prove themselves otherwise with feats of strength and tall tales.

Due to the farmers’ hours of “early to bed and early to rise”, the festival ends in the early evening at sundown, but begins again before dawn -- usually by greeting the sun with a song.

While Heojin and his bodyguards are open to everyone (including fourth-wall characters!), they are not available for small talk and general directionless CR. For the integrity of the mod’s inbox, please only request a thread with him if you already have an idea of what you’d like your character to ask/do. Other NPCs can be requested by sending a PM to the appropriate journals directly, with the same guidelines.

The top-level comments are for the festival, but fourth-wall characters should feel free to use the rest of the post for anything within the city of Keeliai itself! Just remember to label the top-level comment for location and date.

Did Ran really want her touching him? Did he really want her walking somewhere he couldn't easily control her? No and no. With a sigh Ran turned to lead her toward Keeliai. "I'll show you to the city," he corrected. "Anything you do in there is on your head."

As long as he got this mad-girl out of the fields as soon as possible, it would be worth the expense of a bag of boiled sweets.

"Call me Phillee." She had another name, but most aliens tended to have an easier time with this one. "And yourself?"

Skulduggery nodded. The laws of energy conservation, he knew, would be upset - not just by the stone, but by the whole city. Someone like Raine could do very well studying exactly why that was, and perhaps discovering an entirely new law. Maybe she already had.

"I would rather be alone," he said slowly, "which means you should probably be there. I don't trust Malicant to stay dead, and I certainly don't trust when objects from my world conveniently appear right where I happen to be walking."

The crowd was almost nonexistent this far out along the field. A few kedan still passed by - a couple out on a romantic walk, a mother comforting a tired child. The Foreigners' strange antics were usually ignored, so Skulduggery ignored them right back, and stopped underneath one of the larger trees.

The last time Tim heard that, it was loosely disguised code for 'let's go kill a whole bunch of people.' He instinctively opened his mouth to ask whether or not that was really a good idea, and stopped when Jack actually did just... stride away. No guns. No threats. He was practically having fun.

If he was having fun, then Tim needed to have fun as well.

He took a breath, pasted on the smile - that particular smile, the one Jack wore about ninety percent of the time, the cross between amusement and scorn - and followed after him.

... She knew his name. The pretty girl knew his name.

Tim's face throbbed once, very painfully, and Tim sheepishly erased that thought. Not a pretty girl. She was off-limits. And God, what must she have thought, watching a man who looked exactly like her father come up and - yikes. Tim matched her intentional step back, but with a little less intention himself.

Was he supposed to ignore that? Probably. But it wasn't like Jack had been the only one who knew he was a body double, and if this was Jack's daughter, then...?

... Best to play it safe. Tim coughed and carefully - very carefully - shook his head. "I'm legally obligated to..." Oh, screw it. "The last thing I remember is the Meriff's office," he said instead, because at least that would be helpful. Somehow. "We were trying to stop Zarpedon from blowing up the whole moon with that laser thing."

"It'll hurt," said Skulduggery flatly.

He wasn't real. Oh, he was there, quite solidly, very tangible and very much himself, but he wasn't real. Very likely none of these new Foreigners were. Products of the Dreaming, in all likelihood. Skulduggery still wasn't too clear on how that worked, but the existence of the soul gems implied people were taken directly from their home worlds and anchored in place. If Larrikin didn't have a soul gem, he can't have been pulled from their home world.

Of course, little things like reality found it hard to get in the way of real friendship, and Skulduggery's new face smiled at the thought of Anton's reaction. "Have you been to the city yet?"

"Sabre," said Diego. "From... ice."

Squinting a little closer, the creature actually looked... almost human. It didn't smell human, not in the least, and it was always possible the darkness was just playing tricks on Diego's eyesight. The cliffs cast long shadows that left the entire valley - the very narrow valley - looking like the back of a cave.

Diego glanced ahead once, then looked back up at the Raksura, relaxing ever so slightly further. "Don't suppose you know where we are?" he asked. The question rankled, but Diego wasn't in the habit of wandering around like a lost sloth for the better part of a night.

"I have other things to take up with her," Bakura replied, which might be worrisome in itself.

And Bakura, judging by the smirk, knew exactly what Costigan was asking. Thankfully, his answer was not likely going to rile the man.

"Reopened the dojo in the Wood Sector," he replied. "The one Korra owned. She left it to Ryou, when she disappeared. With everything going on with Malicant, there hadn't been much time for him to do anything with it, and then he returned to our world as well. It seemed pointless to let it sit empty, so I had things repaired there. Plus, it's somewhere to live, in the back half of the building. Cheaper than paying rent."

Not that he'd been paying for his rent with legally gotten funds anyway, but that was besides the point.

Tony's body language relaxes, and so does his smile. "There's a place near here that's selling really great meat-and-veggie kabobs. Come on."

He shrugs the armor backpack on again, and leads Howard through the festival, chatting animatedly about the sights and sounds. Once they've gotten food and done a brief pass through the highlights of the festival, Tony turns them towards the city.

"I'll show you the old Palace grounds first. We tore most of it down after the big boss fight, and we're turning it into new foreigner housing and a bunch of other things."

"That's the, ah, 'big evil chaos monster' you were talking about," Howard says, just to refresh his mental notes. (Yes, over lunch, there had been a joke about Tony treating his dad to a meal. Believe it. You are not safe from dad jokes, even with time skips, Tony.)

"Why did you tear it down?"

Ooh, Howard, you don't wanna go down that road.
merb: (✈ where'd you get that bruise)

Stork couldn't really imagine a world that was all humans. "You don't have any other races?" he asked, perplexed. "Wallops? Blizzarians? Aquanosians?"
merb: (✈ with a sense of belonging)

The pilot blinked; she was royalty? Oh boy.

"Stork, of the Storm Hawks squad," he answered, because he figured it was polite to at least give his affiliation, though it was far from royal.
highprofilerichkid: (determination or possibly irritation)

[personal profile] highprofilerichkid 2015-05-05 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
"That's the one. Malicant."

Tony doesn't say anything for a few seconds, and when he finally does speak up again to answer Howard's question, his voice is quiet and serious.

"The Palace is where he set up shop for a long time. There were a lot of... bad memories. He did some pretty nasty things to a whole lot of kedan. Magical experiments and rituals. Blood magic. Death magic. Everybody decided it was better to... start over fresh. There's a few things we kept, like the gardens and the library, but the rest of it got razed."

"You're right," River agreed. "So it's good that the story changed. But this really is a turtle. Have you been to its head yet?"
clarkesthirdlaw: (talkin' the talky talks)

[personal profile] clarkesthirdlaw 2015-05-05 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
"Ah. I see." A den of evil, more horrifying than Howard could probably even begin to imagine. Though he'd been responsible for a good deal of blood and death in his lifetime, it had been all indirect, and mundane rather than arcane. Not like that's much solace to the dead.

"Probably a good idea," he notes.
bluejade: (annoyed)

[personal profile] bluejade 2015-05-05 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
Jade was definitely bipedal and human-shaped, if one ignored details like wings and tail, and having feet far better suited to climbing than humans. Raksura still kept their arboreal roots the way humans hadn't.

And the smell was wrong.

Jade shook her head. "A city. Full of shifters, but not Raksura." Or Fell. She'd smell if they were Fell. "I haven't flown high enough to get a sense of where. It's not the Reaches, though."

Which was worrying. She wasn't in the habit of getting kidnapped to strange locations. Adult queen Raksura were generally regarded as bad choices for kidnapping. And if she knew who would do it, there would be a fight.
bluejade: (Default)

[personal profile] bluejade 2015-05-05 03:24 am (UTC)(link)
"What's the Storm Hawks squad?" Jade asked. She didn't really know much about how non-Raksura society worked. Well, anything about it, beyond a few details. And that it was all different depending on what race you approached, and could easily care about things that Raksura found inconsequential.

"I don't... I don't know. I only just discovered that merpeople existed," Zack said. "Like, a few months ago. I thought they were stories." Even then, they were human, just magically adapted to live under water. One could get into the discussion about how many generations passed before someone stopped thinking of themselves as the same as the people on the land, of course. Isadora had also mentioned that happening.

"Given how poorly humans treat even other humans, I can imagine why others wouldn't advertise their presence."
ruinsprofessor: (calm)

[personal profile] ruinsprofessor 2015-05-05 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
It was. There was a visible shift in Raine's expression, at the point where she decided she just didn't want to know. "Just be careful," she said with a sigh. It might not be a complete waste of breath. And Bakura could take care of himself, at any rate.

The thief gave a short laugh at that, like he could hear her thoughts on the matter. "You're tired of patching me up already?" he jested.

[personal profile] ruinsprofessor 2015-05-05 04:01 am (UTC)(link)
"Tired of seeing the people I care about hurt," Raine returned levelly, not even trying to match his mirth. "That I can patch people up says they are still alive to be healed, so I doubt I can ever truly be tired of that, but there's been too much lately that I can't..." Raine shook her head, stopped herself there.

"Years?" Piper echoed, surprised and looking slightly worried. "You've been here for years?"

She's been poking around a little, so she understands that part about being brought here to help. "But that war is over now, right? Why would... the spell still be going?"
