Gene sighs and closes his eyes. It's a long moment before he speaks again, and when he does, his tone is blunt.

"My stepfather killed my mother when I was younger," he says tersely, keeping his head bowed. He doesn't want her pity - far from it - but maybe that will be enough to sate her curiosity.
