Duke's reply is to start another spell - a larger one, by how much longer it takes for the golden glow to set itself up. The result is a cone of light over Jacob, which heals quite a bit more than the little sphere had. It still leaves him with small sunburns instead of completely burn-free skin, but that just seems to be how his magic reacts to burns.
