MALICANT'S DEFEAT & THE FOREIGNER'S RETURN
It's no surprise that the kedan want to celebrate the nearly-avoided end of the world, and given that the Foreigners were the main reason it was averted, it's pretty easy for them to fold their return into the same celebrations now that they're part of Keeliai's population once more. There are eleven days of "vacation" (to symbolize the 11 months that the Foreigners spent in the Dreaming) for most working kedan in the city, where only the most essential services remain open to their regular business hours. For the rest, most shops and stores close at midday, and the College suspends all classes, leaving the entire afternoon and evening to participate in the festivities. Foreigners currently working for kedanese employers will be offered the entire 11 days -- paid -- if they so choose.
Home and hearth seems to be the overall theme, and given that the fog is still obnoxiously thick and unpleasant, it's all the more reason to enjoy the values of both. Commercial and industrial spaces are temporarily transformed into large communal kitchens, where people can come and cook, bring their own selections from home, and enjoy them in good company.
Many kedan children can be found running around with misshapen ugly black balloons, which they will proudly declare as "Malicant!" before beating them with sticks until they pop. Like Earth-based pinatas, the balloons will contain a selection of candies for them to enjoy as a reward, but truthfully, most of the children seem to be enjoying pummeling these evil-allegories more than the treats.
KEDANESE INDEPENDENCE
As a separate set of commemoration, although no less important to the kedan, is the recognition of their return to full cognizance. While they acknowledge that they may never truly regain the 'warlike' demeanor that Eshai had originally sought them for, kedan who can be persuaded to talk about the change will describe the difference between before and now to be like waking from a dream.
These observations are much quieter than the sometimes-rowdy ones celebrating Malicant's defeat, and are much more reflective. The main method of marking these changes is the 'official' looking forward of things to come, something that was never so sure during the Enemy's reign of terror. Foreigners will be encouraged to participate in the kedan's new tradition of writing down their hopeful predictions for coming years on scraps of paper. Specially minted juulan, stamped with the year, are available for sale with red strings attached, so the papers can be tied up with the coin dangling for a weight.
In two years time, I will have graduated the College and gotten my apprenticeship!
Within five years, I will be retired and relaxing every day.
In three years, I will be a recognized artist and selling my paintings for 500 juulan!
By next year, I will have proposed to her and we'll be married!
Twenty years from now, I will be a grandmother three times over.
These bundled predictions are gathered together by volunteers and at the end of each day, are taken out to the shell's edge to be tossed into the ocean, the weights of the coins taking them beneath the waves.
TO MARK THIS OCCASION...
During this event, characters will receive a simple white notecard a tag bearing a hand-inked symbol of a stylized feather on one side, and an address to a private house on the other. Those who were here for the Yard Sale this past June, will recognize the writing and illustration as the same as those tagged on possessions found back then.
This time is no different, and the mystery "Feather Gifter" has done so again. On a long table inside the otherwise empty building in the Sky Sector, are wrapped boxes with the names of the Foreigners, and inside the boxes are items from their homes. Someone, it seems, really wants this to be a memorable year for them.
