Fall Catch-all
Characters: Tony
Date: October and... some fudged threads from september...
Location: All over Keeliai
Situation: Continuing the terrible tradition of posting catch-alls on the 18th of the month
Warnings/Rating: None yet
1. OPEN | Wherever | Whenever
Tony can be hard to pin down when he's busy, but if he's not in his lab at the College, some other faculty member may be able to point people in the right direction, or say when he'll be back. If it's off-hours, he may be in the makerspace facility, helping out students or tidying things up.
If he's AWOL, though, patience is the best bet. He never spends too long away from his lab.
2. For Valdis | The Hotel | Early October
Tony's kedan contacts - inherited from Solomon - have finally paid off. He's discovered some very interesting and potentially useful information, but there's not a lot he can do with it on his own. He needs to take this to the police force.
He texts Valdis on his handset: can I meet you at the hotel? I found something out about the cultists you should know about.
3. For Pepper | The Jasmine Dragon Tea House | Early October
Pepper will likely hear the information about Zanru's daughter from Valdis soon enough, since she's on the police force too, but Tony wants to get to her first. It's something he wants to talk out with a trusted friend. (Not that Valdis isn't a friend, but Pepper is... Pepper. Second in Friend Rank only to Rhodey.)
He sets a date with her at the Jasmine Dragon tea house - though Iroh and Zuko have vanished again and the tea house has returned to kedan hands, it's still a familiar and favorite venue.
4. For Peridot | Tony's Lab | Late October
Tony has gotten too used to trusting people.
He tends to take his armor with him to and from work, just to keep it handy. Normally he'd do maintenance and diagnostics in his personal, secure lab at home, but his schedule for the next few days is packed and he wasn't sure he'd have time. If he does it at work, he can steal minutes here and there to poke at it in between other tasks.
Besides, the College is busy and everybody knows everybody, and it's not like anyone trying to steal it would get far. So he leaves the armor in the lab while he goes to assist with a group project on another part of the campus. It's doing a reboot from a complete power-down, which will take a while. He'd had to do repairs on some finicky components, and it's overdue for a system debug anyway.
5. For Avery | A Cat’s Paw | backdated to September
Fact one: cats are not native to Keeliai. Fact two: the owner of the new Foriegner-run cat cafe has requested that any such cats that appear in Keeliai be brought to the cafe. Fact three: this is a cat.
Fact four: Tony has no idea how to deal with cats.
The enormous orange tabby is twining around his legs, purring like a v8 engine. It had been in his lab when he unlocked the door (how had it gotten in??), sitting on his desk chair like it owned the damn place, and it has clearly taken a liking to him. Tony's not sure the feeling is mutual.
"Um… here, kitty, come on." He tries to pick the cat up; it slithers out of his arms with ease and darts out of reach. "Crap."
The cat sits under the table and washes its paw. Tony reaches out to it and wiggles his fingers, trying to lure it closer. The cat looks at him, sniffs his fingers, then stands up, arches its back, and headbutts his hand. It's purring again.
Unfortunately, that doesn't make it any more willing to be picked up. Tony spends several minutes chasing the cat around the lab. He manages to get a hold of it several times - it's keeping a hold of it that's the problem. Finally, Tony flops into his chair with an annoyed sigh, glaring daggers at his fluffy opponent.
The cat jumps into his lap and starts kneading his legs.
"Seriously!?" The cat treads a circle around his lap, then neatly tucks its legs under itself and closes its eyes. "You are such an asshole."
Tony grudgingly submits to several minutes of Lap Time. He has to admit, it is pretty cute. But come on, he has work to do!
The cat is not pleased about being dislodged, and saunters haughtily off to go explore the room while Tony tries to figure out how he's going to get it to the cafe. A leash, maybe? He finds some rope and a few metal clasps and jury-rigs a cat harness. Predictably, there follows several more minutes of cat-chasing and cat-wrangling trying to get the damn thing on.
The cat doesn't seem to actually mind the harness all that much once it's on, but another complication arises when Tony discovers that cats have absolutely no respect for the concept of "a walk."
Tony gets lots of amused looks on his way to the cafe. The cat wanders, chases bugs, sniffs things, chews on grass, and several times just flops down on the ground to sun itself. Basically anything except walking in a straight line. When he finally (finally) gets to the cafe, Tony is thoroughly exasperated.
"Hello? I think I found one of your cats."
6. For Marie | House Spycy Iron Dragon | backdated to early September
Marie seems to be settling in well, though Tony feels a little bad about sticking her in the guest room. Maybe it's time to start thinking about an addition to the house.
But if her room is the smallest, at least the food service isn't lacking. Gene handles dinner admirably, and Tony has actually taken a bit of a liking to cooking breakfast (Tony, cooking! Shock and awe!). Breakfast food is hard to fuck up, easy to cook in bulk, and relatively quick to prepare, and by Tony's calculations, that gives it the best 'effort to deliciousness' ratio by a factor of at least three. He'll usually whip up a big house breakfast a few times a week, and today is one of those days.
When Marie walks into the kitchen, she'll find a spread of bacon and sausage; buttered toast and oatmeal, both with a variety of topping options; and, of course, an absolute fuckload of scrambled eggs. There's fruit in the bowl in the center of the table, and coffee brewing on the stove. Tony looks very pleased with himself. (It's always an achievement to be proud of when he doesn't set the kitchen on fire.)

She even manages to get there a little early to scope out a table and get herself something to drink, as well as pick out a few cookies to share once Tony gets here.
6
Even that allowed her to eventually go back to sleep for even a cat nap.
The woman found herself stifling a yawn and she decided that a quick cup of tea before work was a good idea and just before she had ran out the door, she then caught the smell of food and her stomach began to grumble loudly. She knows that if she doesn't eat at this point, she will spend all day stuffing her face on scones and cookies.
When she gets to the kitchen, she takes a peek to see if she can grab something to drink, something to nibble on, and without anyone noticing her dine and dashing, but she sees Tony there. She likes everyone in the house and she does speak when she does see someone, but she still struggles with the need to keep her distance. She isn't quite sure at this point why she's doing it - but she thinks that it's partly because things aren't the same, they aren't the same exact people and also because she is afraid of possibly ruining or interfering with what everyone has with each other.
She is the outsider as far as she is concerned and years of being one has made her used to always remaining one.

I'm headed to the hotel now. Meet me there?
It sounded important, so she had no reason to think he wouldn't.
no subject
He arrives at the Hotel at the promised time, and knocks on Valdis's door.
no subject
Tony had spotted Pepper quickly, and he sits down - and immediately starts decimating the cookies. That's not much of a greeting, but, hey, they live together and see each other practically every day. He's not going to get fussed over being formal.

"I hate to be blunt, but what's so important that you felt you needed to contact me?"
Her tone is sincere and contains no trace of hostility.
no subject
She picks one up for herself before they're all gone. "Did you remember to at least have breakfast this morning?"
no subject
Part of why he'd chosen a food-serving establishment, where prepared food can be obtained immediately, rather than home, where he'd have to forage for or prepare food himself.
no subject
He steps inside, and when the door is closed, he answers her question with equal bluntness.
"Well, I think I figured out what happened to Zanru's daughter."
no subject
She's a little more sedate with her cookie, but she actually had a proper breakfast. "Whatcha been working on?"
no subject
"I thought the girl died during Malicant's reign."
no subject
"Actually, police work, sort of. Solomon had some kedan contacts - like private investigators, or freelance detectives. He got me in touch with them just before he left. I... wanted to know what happened to Zanru's daughter."
no subject
"So I asked some of Solomon's contacts to see what they could dig up. One of them says she's still alive, and working with Daseng."
no subject
"Milyn's morality might be in question, but she's not a liar..."
She paused.
"Daseng isn't above using children to do his dirty work. We already know that."
Her voice had no feeling to it.
"Does Zanru know?"
no subject
"Yeah, I remember hearing a little about her when I first got here," she recalls, nibbling contemplatively on her cookie. "Did you find anything on her? Is she still alive?"
4 [sneaky mission impossible theme]
It's not that hard for the gem to sneak into the lab when she sees the lab's occupant walk off. And once she was inside, she could get a look at that armor.
Oh, yes. Very sweet. Not her color, but nothing to be done about that now.
Unfortunately, this Tony person was a little taller than she was, so the whole armor wouldn't do. Nothing wrong with grabbing the boots and gauntlets, though, right? She searches for a toolkit, finds one, and begins, very carefully, to separate the boots from the rest of the armor.

They look down and everything else is forgotten. "Hash Browns!" It sounds like a non-sequitur, but yes, it's the cat's name. Don't blame them. They didn't name him.

Valdis' second statement earns a nod in solemn agreement. To her question, Tony says, "I don't know. I haven't told her yet, but maybe she already knows. She's spent a lot of time AWOL. She could have been investigating on her own."
no subject
She puts her half-eaten cookie down, frowning.
"Daseng has obviously been at this for a while, and the daughter probably picked up a few tricks of his but she might be easier to find than he is. It might help if Zanru were still around, she could give us a description of her. I know Gene and Valdis found her somewhere last year, but she could be anywhere by now."
no subject
She paused to think about Zanru. Much as she disliked the woman, she had a right to know her daughter was alive.
"You should tell Zanru."
no subject
They blink, as though remembering something. "Oh yeah! Can I get you something? Coffee, maybe? It's totally on the house for bringing Hash Browns back!"
no subject
Relieved to be relieved of his feline charge, Tony frees... Hash Browns from the makeshift harness. The cat shakes its whole body, fluffing out its tousled fur, and starts winding around his legs again. Tony seems to have made a friend - whether he likes it or not.

"There's no need to be rude, Tony. I was there, remember?"
It had been she who had told everyone about Milyn, much to the chagrin of many foreigners.

Well, shit. Must have hit some bigger bugs than he'd been expecting. He's got an appointment, though, so it'll have to wait. He could work on it remotely via Extremis, but last time he'd tried to do that he'd gotten so distracted he walked into a street lamp. That was embarrassing. And besides, the problem could be mechanical or electrical, in which case he'd have to be in the lab in person anyway.
His errand shouldn't take more than an hour or two, so he puts it out of his mind. What can go wrong in an hour?

She sighs, "Nor am I allowed to carry out my past sense of judgement...which can be annoying at times."
It's hard to tell if she is kidding or not.
no subject
Anyway, Milyn is not the problem he came here to discuss. "Right now, I think we need to look into Zanru's daughter. If this lead is real, we might be able to find her. And if we could bring her in, that would be a huge hit to the cultists."
no subject
Valdis was up for anything that might cause issues for the cultists and she knew Tony would be up to the task.
no subject
"I'll do my best." He'll just have to make the time. He knows Valdis has her hands full too. "But keep an eye out. We're going to have to pool all our intel. If Zanru has any idea she's alive, I bet she's already been looking for her for a long time, and she hasn't found her. She's not going to be easy to track down."
no subject
She arched a brow, "Is there anything else?"

Tony would be lying if he said he didn't have any personal investment in her fate. The situation hits close to home. Not everyone is capable of rising above such ugly origins, but some people are. Kids who have never had any other choice should have the chance to choose another way.
