Closed | Malicant Event | Teams 13 - 15
Characters: Team 13 (Raimei Shimizu, Amelia, Korra, Ariadne, Iskierka), Team 14 (Leo Valdez, Bucky Barnes 616, Randolph Lyall, Steve Rogers 616, Charles Xavier), Team 15 (Max Lord, Amon, Nico di Angelo, Inara Serra, Jason Todd)
Date: June 25th - July 13th
Location: Keeliai (various locations)
Situation: Evandau put out the call for help against the great and powerful Oz. Malicant. Ozicant. There are the next three teams to be assembled
Warnings/Rating:
Please include content warnings in subject headers.
The police force has a series of leads they need the Foreigners to follow-up on that may (or may not) relate to the entity known as Malicant. Teams 13, 14, and 15 are mobilised now. See the threads in this post for details and contact Alex (
reignsdown or the mod account) if you have any questions.
Note: A variety of the options indicate that players can create kedan to fill plot needs in terms of questioning and what have you. These kedan are plot-specific and would not count in the rule-of-tens for NPCs (unless they were referred to after the event; but that is future and this is now).

BRIEFING
CLUES
SET 01
Each member of the team is provided a file with English transcriptions of the police file on Yetein, who is profiled as a fifty-three year-old kedan that took over a carpet-restoring business in the Fire Sector during his youth, rebuilt it, and then sold it. This started a pattern of acquisitions and dispositions that garnered him a wide web of influence all over Keeliai and a small fortune with which he has recently been plying local officials, gangs, and other businesskedan in order to garner favourable conditions for the M-one to set up shop. While he has been closed-lipped about those details, the file notes that attempts to question him on the details triggers some form of PTSD-related hysteria that has been attributed to Darth M's fear techniques. There are notes that he claims to know two key locations relevant to what is currently going on, but has refused to give them up until protection is assured. A brief rapsheet enclosed shows that he has only once been arrested for assault during an altercation regarding the ownership of a carpet while he owned the restoration business. There is a note that Yetein refuses to give up the locations and insists on personally escorting them as there are too many security details to address in a report.
Note: Players are free to expand on the nature of Yetein and treat him as a team-shared NPC for the duration of the event.
Options:
A
Follow Yetein to the first location, investigate, and report back to Xi on the nature of the situation. The site is in the Earth Sector and Yetein would lead them through a convoluted path via the Metal Sector, explaining that he is bypassing every checkpoint that he is aware of his name and face is currently high on the hit list and he wants to make it through this intact. Questions asked about the site earn a shake of his head at first but should one of the team attempt to befriend him, he would explain it as a coordination house that sees most of the lieutenants (and higher) loyal to the cause route through it every two to three days to report on the progress of their ventures. Yetein does not know anything about these other ventures, but he knows records of some sort are kept there -- either on paper on in the memory of the ones that coordinate the operations -- and that is what he is counting on to extend his protection and perhaps protect him from the actions he has already taken (which he would not feel comfortable to divulge, pulling nervously at his robes at any such question asked). Meanwhile, the team may notice they are being followed at a discreet distance by three kedan wearing robes of a similar style to Yetein's. They are persistent through attempts to lose them and, three kilometres into the Earth District, two additional kedan step out into the road before them and demand that they hand over Yetein with no questions asked. The three other kedan catch up and it could be noted that they are carrying swords and batons, appearing quite ready to use them. Players could create names and attitudes for these kedan as they see fit.
Exact results for any confrontation with these kedan and information on the nature of the site would be provided in the next clue set if this option is taken. Feel free to utilise RNG to handle the outcome of the situation, but note that the final state of Yetein would be disclosed in the next clue set.
B
Follow Yetein to the first location, investigate, and report back to Xi on the nature of the situation. The site is in the Wood Sector and Yetein would lead them through a convoluted path via the Water Sector, explaining that he is bypassing every checkpoint that he is aware of his name and face is currently high on the hit list and he wants to make it through this intact. Questions asked about the site earn a shake of his head at first but should one of the team attempt to befriend him, he would explain that M-demorte utilises this site to store and distribute the weapons and currency necessary to convince the more reluctant parties as to the importance of complying with its will. Yetein estimates tens of thousands of juulan to be stored there, but has no knowledge of what weapons are stored there. It is his hope that by revealing this location discreetly, Xi could arrange a raid and disable this important division of M-team's operations. When the team nears the border to the Water Sector, a hail of arrows would rain down on them -- with the intent to strike Yetein and no concern about those escorting him. This assault would continue until Yetein is dead or until the kedan behind it have been identified and disabled.
Exact results for the confrontation with these kedan and information on the nature of the site would be provided in the next clue set if this option is taken. Feel free to utilise RNG to handle the outcome of the situation, but note that the final state of Yetein would be disclosed in the next clue set.
Deadline:
To permit creation of the next clue set, please reply with the option selected by the team by July 2nd at end of day. If no response is made at that time, a mod will RNG the option. SET 02; cw: violence, compound fracture
The kedan that surround the team state very clearly that they are there for Yetein and nothing more; they would provide ample opportunity for the Foreigners to disperse and allow them to deal with what they describe as being an in-house problem. Refusal to back down would then include the Foreigners as the target group and the kedan would proceed to attack. Their methods are brutal and intent obviously lethal, but their focus is Yetein first and foremost. Characters could use this to their advantage throughout the course of the fight; players are asked to RNG outcomes regarding injuries and incapacitation of the attackers.
Once the dust settles, Yetein could be found cowering in the midst of the Foreigners and cradling his arm, which has been fractured and the skin broken by bone. To his credit, he does not cry out at attempts to bandage or splint it; instead, he insists that this is why he stands against the darkness. To heal Tu Vishan would be to restore his own shifting abilities, which could deal with this fracture in a heartbeat. He would offer profuse thanks for the protection and, after a quarter of an hour, be ready to continue onwards.
No further kedan attack them en route to the location and Yetein stops the group in the shade of an awning for a mundane little. He nods to the far side of the street, where a sign advertises an architectural firm with seventy years of history in the Earth Sector. This is where they report in and he's sad to admit that he helped revitalise this firm in the last few years. He stresses that only recently has it turned sour by the taint of M-demort, though he refuses to call it by name. There are two kedan that lean in the shadows of the firm's entry and an additional five visible through the glass front. Yetein explains there is a secret entrance in the basement of the shop that the team stands before and that he can get them access to it if they choose the subtle approach.
Options:
A
Attempt to gain entry by using the front-door approach. They would be confronted by the two kedan at the door and Yetein would order them to stand down; these two did not receive the memo and would, after a tense moment, step aside to let him enter. Then they would be met by the five kedan on the inside, who would question their purpose and why Yetein has been so long absent. He would dismiss the latter as being simply too occupied with obtaining additional funding to report in on dull developments -- making mention that he knows as well as they that it is safer to not report than to report failure or slow progress. The five would exchange uncomfortable looks at this, then focus on the Foreigner presence once more. In thanks for their assistance, Yetein would explain that they have spoken against the Ironwood Emperor and he feels they should meet Waxu -- this is the first time that such a name has been mentioned to the team. The milling kedan would step aside to speak for a spell, then would let the team in.
Exact details as to the nature of Waxu and the interior of the building would be provided with the next clue set if this option is taken.
B
Utilise the secret door alluded to by Yetein. The mundane shop turns out to be a clay supplier that maintains a storefront for tools and treatments used to finish clay works and kilns. The owner is a young kedan by the name of Cyoalin and she regards the Foreigners with a starstruck expression, having long desired to interact with one. She asks them a dozen different questions about their homes and feelings about the state of Keeliai, as well as whether they are here to save them or not. When brought on track by Yetein, she quickly aggrees to let them into the rear of her shop, where there exists a set of stairs underneath the fire grating of a large, long unused kiln that is cool to the touch. Cyoalin explains that this will lead them directly into the building opposite her shop and, in fact, she has used it to eavesdrop on meetings there -- the details of which she would shyly stammer about being unimportant.
The exact findings at the end of the tunnel that the stairs lead into would be provided with the next clue set if this option is taken.

FINAL SET & OUTCOMES
"Musty" best describes the atmosphere of the tunnel and the team is forced to make their way without torches or other light sources. The ground is uneven and should they manage to conjure a lightsource via the use of a PSD (delivered just before they went underground), they would see a myriad of cracks have lifted up the original brick floor. The existence of the floor suggests that this tunnel once saw much use and purpose, though Yetein states he does not know exactly what purpose it had been initially built to serve.
En route, he explains that they should probably seek out a kedan by the name of Waxu. This particular kedan coordinates every meeting and sharing of information that happens within the architectural firm, therefore possesses a great deal of knowledge about who has sworn fealty to M-demort. He admits to counting on that knowledge to help ease his own sentence, for the entire purpose of their errand is to trade-up, in a sense. He provides them with key information about the kedan working against the Emperor and Tu Vishan, then the Alderwood Commander simply incarcerates him rather than the standard interrogation and public execution.
Sweat beads upon his brow as Yetein speaks and he moves faster, wanting to get out of the tunnel as soon as possible. Characters may notice the temperature of the tunnel fluctuates and the musty air becomes difficult to breathe in by the time they reach a grating that lifts away to give them access into a room with a fireplace in the opposite building. They emerge into a small room with a door at the far wall; there is little in the way of furniture or interest here, leading the team to open the door.
Voices just beyond it stall them from going further and a loud voice bids them to halt and reconsider, for a team of seven kedan have each trained a weapon upon the door. Yetein pales and states that the voice belongs to Waxu. How he knows they are there he cannot answer, but he pulls nervously at his robes with his good hand and instinctively hides behind one of the team, the sweat now near pouring off him. He complains of heat and the team may notice that the room has begun to fill with smoke -- the source is the opening through which they entered in the first place.
"Power Surge" Devices:
The team will have their "power surge" devices (PSDs) delivered to them prior to embarking on their outcome option. This will be delivered to them per the OOC announcement via means appropriate to their location. These devices are approximately the size of a small backpack and have straps such that they can be worn like one, with a simple control panel stitched into the canvas siding. These devices can each be used for a thirty second return of powers for one person and then must be recharged for a minimum of five minutes. If you have any questions about these devices, please direct them to the OOC announcement.
Outcomes:
Based on the findings of set 02, this team has one of two final outcomes for their clueventure:
A
Attempt to subdue Waxu and the team of kedan he holds in ambush for them utilising whatever means necessary. The team would succeed with some effort and could take Waxu captive, though the fate of the remaining kedan is up to the players. Yetein breathes more easily once they turn Waxu in and there is a very public execution after a very private interrogation headed by Xi and Evandau. The former debriefs the team afterwards, providing some intel in return; Waxu admitted to assisting Malicant by coordinating its kedan supporters and they were able to obtain a list of fifty associates that will be brought in, questioned, and executed for conspiracy against the Emperor and the turtle. Yetein is saved from execution as he hoped, though he is sentenced to seventy years in the prison beneath the Palace of Landed Sky. He will only serve ten of them before being found by incarcerated supporters that took issue with his freedom of tongue. His holdings are confiscated by the police and redistributed to a orphanages that have experienced a surge of children due to the deaths and disappearances of kedan over the course of the decay.
Meanwhile, of the fifty associates named by Waxu, only twenty-three are brought in. Word on the streets is that warnings spread like wildfire and subsequently every location that Yetein knew about was shutdown. The police work hard, but never find who shared the information nor where the operations were re-located to.
B
Attempt to retreat and report back to Xi about the attempted ambush. The team backtracks through the tunnel, but encounters thickening smoke and heat as they near the kiln entrance. Calls to Cyoalin go unanswered and they would have to find a way to quench what turns out to be a hearty fire in the heart of the kiln before they could escape -- meanwhile, Waxu's kedan would follow them into the tunnel and attempt to apply lethal force in recompense for this attempt at trespass.
The team ultimately escapes, but at a cost; Waxu gets away and though the kedan are unsuccessful at killing them, they were quite stubborn in combat and did not flee at the use of the two PSDs. Operations at the architectural firm are ceased and re-located elsewhere, prompting a new police investigation to track and shut it down. Yetein's information, as a result, becomes worthless and his deal with Xi falls through. At his public execution, Cyoalin can be seen standing on her toes in the crowd -- the first sighting of her since the kiln incident -- and she smiles before waving at him and literally disappearing into the masses.
Xi thanks the team for their assistance and notes that Yetein's last request was that his holdings be passed to them in gratitude for what they attempted to do. These holdings are less than what they once were, but provide for an increase of twenty juulan per month for each character's income for a year.
Deadline:
Please reply with the final outcome of your team by July 11th at end of day; this is to ensure that there is a known outcome for each team by the end of the event. If no response is made at that time, a mod will RNG the outcome. A header has been provided in the IC section for your team for any threading relevant to this final set. QUESTION - FINAL SET!
He would go brain spelunking, looking for details of Malicant. Specifically he would look for other sources of information on Malicant, basically as if the minds he encounters are a card catalog and he'll rifle them looking for other resources to be pursued.
Could he find the names of any books, scrolls or other kedans who he could pursue? In the Choice A it says there are 50 associates but only 23 are brought in, could Charles' efforts help boost that number? Perhaps result in an extra crumb for the police to find or a location for PCs to group together an investigate at a later date?

OTHER
Charles Xavier
ICly Though psi-null Charles is good at making friends (even if he is wary of Yetein's motives) and it is a very Xavier thing for him to seek out options that involve talking and making connections with people. So he would definitely focus himself on being friendly and showing himself as trustworthy to Yetein and doing everything he could to encourage the man to talk to him.

ICly: Steve's still a capable fighter without his powers, so he would be somewhat useful in a fight. He could probably take down one or two of the assailants. He would also treat Yetein fairly and with friendly kindness. And when they got attacked, he would try his best to protect Yetein and anyone in the party who wasn't proficient in combat scenarios.

He would probably notice the kedan in option A though, and in B he can find a way to dismantle the traps
OOCLY i am fine with either option! :3

ANYHOW I forgot to mention that Leo isn't really good at fighting either! But he can improvise traps and such if needed
Re: OTHER
ICly, Lyall would be very interesting in befriending Yetein, since that would be the best way of finding out more about him, his motives, and what he knows. He's very amiable and unassuming and he's good at befriending people.
If we go with option A, he would notice the stalkers and he would probably also attempt to talk to the kedan who want Yetein and try to persuade them to stand down, hoping to stall at least. He's not much of a fighter without his werewolf powers or a gun, but he is quite strong.
For option B, he would probably be focused on trying to get Yetein to cover and protecting him rather than trying to find the attackers.
