hope this works!
He was struggling with a glove, on his way back to Jack's shop for a quick lunch break, when he bumped into something - spilling the several-juulan tip he'd just received onto the snow. "Dammit," he muttered under his breath.
just fine!
She gasped as she stumbled back a step and saw the man drop his earnings. "Oh! Oh no! I'm so sorry. Let me help you with that."
She crouched down and began collecting the juulan that had fallen to the ground.

"It's fine, miss, I'm the one who wasn't lookin' properly where I was going," he said gruffly. "No need to get snow on yourself on my account."
no subject
She had collected a handful already and held them over to him.

"But wouldn't you be cold?"
no subject
"Name's Booker, by the way. Booker DeWitt."
no subject
She hesitantly took his hand and shook it. She's still pretty new at these introduction things.
"It's nice to meet you. My name is Rapunzel." She paused and thought for a minute. "You're Elizabeth's friend, aren't you?"
no subject
"Elizabeth mentioned you," he admitted, holding out the jacket for her. Okay, she'd been downright thrilled about having met Rapunzel. "Sounds like you two've got a lot in common. Have you made lots of friends here?"
no subject
"There are a lot of really good people here. People who want to help each other."
no subject
"That's good, though," he said out loud, because he didn't want to concern her with his worries. "It sounds like there's a lot of folks Elizabeth'll get along with. She's never... had friends. Her own age." He wasn't sure how much Elizabeth had told this girl, or anyone, about her life before, and he wasn't about to go talking about it without her say-so.
no subject
"She told me a little bit about that." She was sure that there was more to the story, much like their was more to her own story, but she didn't want to pry. She liked Elizabeth, and that was all she really needed to know.
"I didn't have friends my own age, either. Just my friend Pascal."
no subject
He was imagining - well, Songbird.
no subject
Her voice trailed off for a moment. She'd already explained Pascal to a few people and gotten strange looks from them. She wasn't embarrassed about her best friend, but she realized it wasn't considered a normal relationship in other worlds.
"He's a chameleon. He was with me in my tower since I was little."

"He never would have been able to hide from mother if he was big like that."
no subject
"Wait, you had to hide your only friend from your mother?"
no subject
She looks flustered and plays nervously with her braided hair. "My mother wanted to keep me safe, so I never met other people. I wasn't sure how she'd feel about animals, so it seemed like a good idea to just...not tell her about him?"
no subject
"That ain't how you keep someone safe. No matter how much you love them, you gotta let 'em be their own person," he said seriously.
no subject
Thanks to her time with Eugene, and now her time on the turtle, she knew that there were flaws in her mother's theories, and the way she had been hidden away, but she still believed that she had only meant the best for her. That she would always defend.
no subject
Like what had happened to Elizabeth. But that was Comstock's fault. It was all his fault, not Booker's.
no subject
"Once I get home I know I'll be able to convince her that not everyone is bad, though. I've made some good friends, after all."
no subject
no subject
That decision was getting more complicated with every passing day. She had so many new friends here already; people she'd miss desperately if she was separated from them, but there were still things back home that she needed to do. Questions she needed answers to.
"I think so. There's still something I have to do. People I left behind..."
She had made a promise.
no subject
He wouldn't exactly enjoy going back to Columbia, but if Elizabeth ever ended up back there? He'd follow her in a heartbeat. No way would he leave her there in Comstock's hands.
