May catch-all [Open~!]
Characters: Raine Sage and whoever feels like dropping by.
Date: Early May, or at your convenience during the rest of the month
Location: All over the city! Especially the hospital.
Situation: Various, mostly open-ended. Helping to keep people on their feet and not ill, exploring the world of cooking, possibly making unwise overtures at the palace barrier. And so on.
Warnings/Rating: None right now, will edit if that changes.
1; the hospital
The last few weeks have been hectic for a variety of reasons, and Raine’s been spending the greater portion of her time, sleeping and waking, at the hospital. It kind of shows; she doesn't look quite as put together as she normally does. She’s probably cast more Recover spells in the last little while than in the entirety of the regeneration journey back home.
She can be found fairly easily, usually with staff in hand, ready to heal anyone who so much as coughs in her general vicinity.
---
2; the markets
Raine hasn’t had the chance to subject anyone in Keeliai to her unique brand of experimental cooking. Yet.
Unfortunately, she’s finding it necessary not only to feed herself, in the absence of any better cooks, but also to try her hand at baking shortcake, in the hopes of keeping her spiritual energy up.
There’s no actual logical reason she should be picking up spices for the latter, but that is definitely what she’s doing, judging by how she’s having a thoughtful (and fairly one-sided) discussion with a kedan vendor about the possibilities inherent in spicy cake.
---
3; outside the lamentably changed palace
When she feels secure enough to leave healing and turtle-parenting duties to the others who are equally capable in them, Raine occasionally makes the trip up to the palace to see what she can see.
She’s not foolish enough to start by heading straight for the barrier, but she makes a long, slow circumference of the palace, noting what’s changed. Occasionally she squints at it, screwing up her eyes like she’s gone abruptly nearsighted.
The next logical step is clearly to see how the barrier reacts to thrown rocks, and she's already got one in hand, hefting it in consideration.
---
4; other
[ Raine is turtleparent to the hatchling known as Ryder, and lives in Earth, in suite 2B. She does rather a lot of healing magic, including curing poison (such as spores, if she gets to it fast enough) and some general purification, and enjoys recreational archaeology. If any of this catches your attention or if you just want a different starter than’s here, drop me a line at

However, she did need to stop and grab her medic bag that had bottles of the purest water available on Tu Vishan for healing purposes. Mainly to finish the last session on her leg, which looked physically fine if one were to look at it as she rolled up her pant leg. Though she was still healing the bone that had been broken from her being shot.
It's while she was doing this, her facial features highlighted by the glowing blue water she held to her leg, that she noticed the white haired woman. For the wildest moment, she thought it was Bakura based on the style alone; but a split second later told her otherwise.
"Are you one of the doctors?" A fresh face to her meant that either they were new, or worked a separate shift from her.

Vaguely familiar in the way that meant Raine had probably seen her around, somewhere, in the chaos, and there was something about what she was doing with the water that was tweaking Raine's memory... Ah. "Is there something I can help you with? Although I would guess you've got things well in hand," she added, indicating the water in question. "That is, if you are Korra?" The last was more speculation than she'd like, based only on a few mentions of those capable of healing using water.

"Sorry, you just looked like a doctor." Or an adult, they went in hand in hand as far as the Avatar was concerned. "I was just healing up the last part of my leg and I thought it wouldn’t hurt to have someone look at it. Make sure I got everything. But maybe another healer’s point of view might be just as good. If you’re not bust I mean." And of course it’s busy, that was why Korra was putting in extra hours at the hospital after all.

She didn't think she looked like a doctor, but she supposed it was a compliment. To business. "A second set of eyes is a good idea. I can certainly have a look, if you like; I have a moment, and enough energy." Her non-magical training might be unfortunately lacking, but she could definitely tell if something had gone wrong, at the very least. She moved a little closer, watching what Korra was doing. "What was the original nature of the injury? Has it been healing well to this point?"
ARE YOU BUST, RAINE? god, sorry for that last tag.
"Uh, well..." The nature of the injury. That wasn't something Korra even thought she'd have to explain, and now she felt stupid for not seeing it coming up. Of course that would be necessary to know. Something she always needed to know right off the bat when healing those that went to her suite instead of the hospital.
"I don't know if you've heard of a gun before-" Because she sure didn't until she met Joel. "but I got shot by one of them through my leg." Korra moved the water away from her skin and tapped just above the knee, the outline of the wound was still there; but she was working on making sure the scar didn't stay.
"The back of my leg was a lot messier than the front. But my boyf" Well, no. "Mako, he closed it off with his firebending. I've been healing it to mend the bone and make sure there's no lasting effects."
Aside from some now deep seated fear of guns. Something that's faster than her bending.
"But yeah, it's been healing okay so far. Just taking more time than I thought it would." Now she just hoped that Raine got whatever she was looking for in her question. However, she held the water away from her leg so the white haired healer could get a looksee for herself.
No worries, communication happened~
After a few moments' careful consideration, Raine stepped back. "Well. From the outside, everything seems to be healing fine, as it should. My only diagnostic spell isn't precise enough to help here, I'm afraid, so I'm inclined to trust your judgment: you know your own body best, after all, and if it's not giving you trouble and is performing as expected, then there's no reason to intervene. I'm more than happy to offer my own artes to help speed the last of the healing-- how long ago was this, by the way? And how does your, ah -- waterbending? -- work as regards healing?"
That last wasn't completely relevant, but everyone's techniques seemed to function just a little bit differently, and observing the similarities and differences was absolutely fascinating.

Of course Korra was wary of magic, outside of Zatanna’s magic, she only hesitantly trusted Sabriel’s. Anyone else’s was something she had preferred to keep at a distance, so she was slightly relieved that her spell wouldn’t have been that effective. But the question of her bending flew right over her head. Korra was too busy placing that word.
And then it clicked.
"Right before the explosions happened. But artes!" Korra put the glowing water back and looked at Raine, surprise on her face. "Do you know Richard, or-" A pause as she looked away, trying to chase the name down in her mind. "Asbel! They used artes, it was kind of like bending. But not really."
Unhelpful, though Korra didn’t seem to care about that just then.

Then she fully processed what the past tense probably meant in that situation. "...I take it they're no longer here, and are thus unavailable to ask directly."
no subject
"Um, Asbel had a spirit or something in his eye and Richard’s a king who likes natto on toast." The smile she gave after that was the weakest one ever. Maybe if she actually asked them about their world she could give a bit more information, but that was all she had.
"But yeah, they returned home months ago." Korra continued her healing all the while, giving an apologetic shrug at her lack of any details that might help distinguish how they both knew artes.

...but why in the world would Korra have remembered the man's food preferences.
The oddity of that aside, Raine made no effort to hide that she was watching Korra heal, intrigued by the movement of the water. "Bending, you said. You've used that term multiple times."
no subject
At the lament, Korra only found that she really missed them too. Especially Richard. So she was thankful for the change over to ‘bending’. Something she could talk about for hours given the chance.
“Yeah. Bending’s manipulating the elements. Like waterbending.” For a prime example, she swished the water through the air downwards before guiding it back upwards and then freezing it down to the last drop. It stayed in the air as she held out her palm and then she pulled her hand towards her, making it water once more, to gather it back into the empty bottle.
“It’s fairly common in my world. I don’t know if you met him” she gave an amused raised eyebrow. Of course she doubted that Raine had, but on the off chance… “but Mako is a firebender.”

The term 'bending' was still giving her some pause, in that it looked rather a lot like Korra's world's version of magic, but everyone else Raine had met simply used the term, or something like it. Which was not to say that there couldn't be a break in pattern -- there must be thousands of possible worlds -- but it seemed odd, nevertheless. Not large, in the overall scheme of things, but interesting.
"I'm curious," Raine said finally, "but I don't even know where to start asking. And I shouldn't stay long, if you're well enough, but-- Why is it called 'bending'?"
no subject
But that was later, for now she opened her mouth to answer and it stayed that way for a couple of seconds. Her blue eyes looked past Raine for a moment, as if the answer was behind her. "It's, always been called bending. I guess because you make an element do what you want; you bend it to your will."
A spark happened when she snapped open her hand and a flame formed in her hand. She quickly turned it around brushed her hand through air, a blazing trail followed and the vanished as she let the fire die away. "That's how I see it anyway."
no subject
And there Raine cut herself off, looking faintly embarrassed. "You came here to heal, not satisfy my curiosity. Don't let me keep you, if you have places to be." There were things she should be doing, too, always something else to attend to even if everything had evened out a little lately. As interesting as Korra was, priorities had to be made.
no subject
"It’s not magic."
That was one of her pet peeves, but she had dealt with it enough times to not raise her voice when it came up. Especially for someone who was seeing bending for the very first time. Anytime after that though, she wasn’t as nice about it.
“It’s okay, I arrived early to finish my last session. Didn’t need as much time as I thought I did.”
She folded her arms just to bring one up and tap her chin thoughtfully. “But yeah, it’s an extension of yourself. You reach out with your chi to the element and move it with that. Not everyone can though. Some people are born benders, others aren’t.”
Explaining her own abilities was going to take a little bit longer, and she knew Raine was on the clock. And Korra had no idea if Sep kept a tighter ship than Bianca did.
“But if you want, I can go over that with you later at the Brazen Turtle some time. Then you can tell me how your artes work too. I want to know if they’re different from the others.” Bending was a subject Korra didn’t get tired of, and she wanted to know if Raine’s artes fell into the elemental natures.

Regardless of Sep's administration habits, something about the man inspired best effort. Raine would have reined herself in soon enough anyway; it was one thing to get carried away with academic interests when there were others expecting it and compensating, and another entirely to let herself do that when things or people depended on her.
The offer of continued conversation came as a little bit of a startlement, but a good one. "I'd enjoy the chance to talk more in depth," Raine said, pleased. "I believe I know where the Brazen Turtle is. When are you free?"

Korra chuckled and rested her hand on her medical bag. "I work there as a barback, so any time at night works for me!" And she had the most important tidbit of information to share: “If you haven’t claimed your free drink yet, I can make it for you too.”
Not something most would be incredibly proud of, but this was Korra.

She gave a wave and was heading off when she turned to call out. “I’ll keep an eye out for you!"
