Well, Sokka has had a rather busy day. All sorts of things have been transpiring in Sokka's life, and all in all he feels rather good about it. Of course, there are still a few disconcerting things to deal with, and his sister is one of them. She's been distant and mopey ever since she had discovered Zuko had come back, and that is always going to concern an elder brother. And so after meeting with Anton in the hotel first, to confirm his plans, he comes up to their shared room in the Midnight Hotel, hoping that she's back from bending practice.
He opens the door and peeks in before entering fully. "Katara?" he calls out.
Luckily, Sokka would find her back from her training. Unfortunately, he would also find her just settling in for a nap.
Fortunately, she's not in too bad a mood, and he's probably only going to have to weather an exasperated sigh and a tired look as she sits back up and pushes her hair out of her face.
"You're back," she says in possibly the most noncommittal tone she's capable of.
The non-committal tone is one Sokka can weather if it were him she were upset with. He's made her angry at him so many times that he can imagine; he's practically invented a science around that very notion. But the fact that she's just been going through the motions these past few weeks, not super excited about anything... well, it worries him. And it's plain on his face.
"Good to see you too," he says rather plaintively yet still sarcastically. There's a thought that crosses his mind to just do all of this later, but unfortunately, things are building up, and while there's plenty of time to tell her... there's...
He just wants to tell her now.
"Look, you and I need to talk," Sokka says after he closes the door. "And if you really want to take your nap first, fine, but there have been some big things going out there, and I'm hoping at least one of them will get you out of your funk."
The concern on his face only doubles the guilt she already feels, and she has to look away a minute as she turns on her bed to cross her legs more comfortably. "What's up?"
No comment about her 'funk'... it's clear on her face that she knows she needs out of it. She's just maybe a little too stubborn to admit it out loud.
Yes, Katara, he knows just how you're feeling. He hasn't mentioned it yet because he had been hoping you'd find your own way out of it. But now it's time for a little sibling intervention.
But her invitation, and the hidden acknowledgement that she has... been in said funk, even if she won't confess it verbally, means that Sokka is going to continue his way in and talk. And so he enters and sits on the bed next to her, looking at her with more than a little bit of concern.
"Well, for starters," he says before taking a quick pause to figure out the best way to say all of this, "I think I've secured for us a steady stream of juulan for the next several months. Which means we'll at least be paying for the room again, but it should still mean that we're actually making money for a change instead of spending money."
"You got a job? It isn't another one of those scams, is it?" she asked, giving him a short-lived, scrutinizing look. Things weren't exactly easy for foreigners at the moment, and she wouldn't past Sokka to try to pull another big one just to get them some cash.
Deep down, she cringed. At least he was able to bring in juulan... her own means of making money had been very scarce. Just another reason to feel guilty.
Wow, Katara, way to jump to conclusions on that one. Way to have faith in your brother.
"No, no no no no! Not a scam either! Good honest work," Sokka says, trying to defend himself and withering away slightly from her scrutiny. "Granted, it's cold work. Outside. In the cold. I'll be helping run supplies between stations working on the train thing the Metalworkers are building. Apparently there's been some sort of deal brokered or... whatever. Granted, I'm not saying I like or trust the metalworkers, but I can't say no to getting some solid money out of it."
"Oh...Well, that's--that's great, Sokka," she tells him. She's not too sure about the Metalworkers herself, but she--dare she say it-- trusts her brother. "And it's not like you're not used to the cold...though I guess it is colder here than I remember the south pole being." A pause. "So when do you start?"
Well, Katara could sound a little more upbeat about everything, but he supposes he'll take it, whatever it is. "Well, yeah, it is kind of cold, even by South Pole standards," Sokka admits, "but yeah, totally used to this, right? Just bundle up in tons of furs. It's totally going to be great!" Granted, it still cold outside, and even Sokka will complain about it after a bit, but it could be worse; he could be practically any other member of Team Avatar.
"Tomorrow," he continues, answering her question. "I've already worked it out with Anton. We've still got the room, so that's nothing to worry about. Besides, I'm still thinking that one day we'll be able to move into the Palace."
February 8th or so
