I was Looking for a Breath of Life
Characters: Valdis and Gene to start, others to follow
Date: March 26th
Location: The farmlands outside the city
Situation: Valdis' patience is at its limits, she hasn't slept in days, the nightmares are becoming worse and her thoughts are twisting into shadows.
Warnings/Rating: There will be blood...
The large hound ran across the back of the turtle at full speed, testing her agility, trying to keep her mind off the reoccurring nightmares and the evolution of her strange illness. She slowed as she approached the farmlands, sitting on the edge of a field to watch as people worked. Familiar and unfamiliar scents filled the air, but she ignored them all, losing herself in her thoughts. She was tired and not from running, it felt deeper than that and if her suspicions were correct, then it was also deeply disturbing. To say she was frustrated would be an understatement, she felt more on edge, agitated and anxious. She had a terrible feeling that it wouldn't take much to set her off and worst of all, she felt detached from herself, her normally sharp senses muted and dull.
She had been trying to pretend that nothing was wrong, it was easier than facing the truth. Lying to herself and others was so much simpler. Denial kept her going, acceptance would only cause more pain. Her head began to hurt and her vision darkened, the feelings of detachment intensified as her irises shifted color. She suddenly felt energized again, craving a release, she simply needed a reason.

At the Healers Guild

Is Raine here?
[He called out as they entered, making his preference for who was to do the healing known.]
no subject
What happened?
[This is the second time inside about a month she's had to deal with a half-dead Valdis, and at least one of the people involved is the same. This is now a pattern, and one Raine dislikes a *lot*. But... on closer examination, Valdis doesn't look injured, just unconscious, which is the only reason Raine isn't instantly casting. Still a problem, just a different one.]

She told me she lost a lot of blood. She hit her head pretty hard as well after falling down an embankment. I do not know if it was blood loss, or insanity speaking, but she spoke of the barrier of her soul deteriorating. Whatever that means. Then she fainted.
[ His voice was cold as he laid out what had happened. He looked to Wan. After all he only knew half of the story.]
no subject
[Wan shook his head, crossing his arms.]
She's not insane and it wasn't the blood loss. There's a barrier between her soul and the darkness within her. If the barrier falls, the darkness will consume her soul.
[He looked at Raine.]
She was loosing the fight before Nelo Angelo found her.
[Wan defaulted to the name he was more familiar with for the man out of habit rather than maliciousness.]
She was attacking Gene when I found her. I forced some of the darkness back, I think. She started looking dizzy and physically ill and wasn't able to attack while I did it. But I had to stop to save Gene. Tony should be bringing him, I don't know if he's gotten here yet.
no subject
She seems physically fine, at least; I assume her regeneration kicked in? Bring her this way.
[Soul problems are mostly beyond her pay grade, as it were, unfortunately, but she has a few possibilities. She leads them back into the halls, turning off at the first open room for a place to put Valdis. On the way she catches one of the kedan who works there with her, warns them that there may be about to be a very injured Foreigner in the lobby and perhaps they should be ready for that.]
[At Wan:]
So you think that barrier is degrading? How did you push that darkness back, and could you repeat it, should it be necessary?
no subject
[ He sounds irritated because he is irritated. He hates not having all of the facts. It is due to Dante that he feels he has to watch out for her as it was. He looked back to Wan a second as the two talked then followed as Raine instructed. This is not his area of expertise so he's just staying quiet and carrying her.]
no subject
[He said as he glanced at Nelo-Vergil. He offered the man a smile, hoping to defuse the frustration.]
I don't think she was trying to imply you weren't. You've done a great service by finding her and bringing her here. Thank you.
[He meant every word, but his attention was quickly back to Raine.]
I can do it again, but I can't keep it up indefinitely. I had to stop before because Gene was bleeding out and I couldn't risk putting off healing him any longer.
[It was more than obvious in his tone that he really wished he could have. Valdis was enough of a priority to him that he would have been fine with letting Gene lay there with his injuries if he'd thought the man would survive them without help.]
no subject
[Raine shakes her head, indicates that Vergil should put Valdis down. It's no bed, just an examination table; she'll move the woman later if she needs to keep her there long-term.]
[There are a few moments where Raine looks curiously blank, like her focus is somewhere else entirely. She's paying attention to something no one else in the room can feel. There's something very wrong about Valdis' mana, beyond the typical not-quite-human strangeness. Not typical, even for Valdis. She supposes this is the darkness Wan mentioned. In a moment she attends to the conversation again.]
...light, hmm. There's one thing I can try right away, but the problem may require something a bit more precise than simply refreshing her mana. Wan, is there any more detail you can give me regarding the barrier? And are either of you injured as well?
no subject
he stepped out of the way so the other two could talk and figure out what to do.]
no subject
[Wan assumed Vergil was since he didn't say anything. The only blood on him probably belonged to Valdis. Or Gene.]
I can't really give you more. I only know what she's told me about it. How it effects her. And how I effect her. Our souls were joined once, briefly. We're pretty sure that's the only reason I have any power over her in the way that I do.
no subject
Your souls were--?
[Raine cuts herself off. Fascinating, but not directly relevant enough to merit an aside for interrogation, except perhaps in one respect.]
If that power extends in any way to a sense of what state she's in, that would be helpful.
[She does not, however, wait for a response, rather starts concentrating. White light in sharp, angular patterns circles her feet.]
This shouldn't be detrimental, and if not helpful will at least give me some idea how to proceed. Resurrection.
[And prismatic wings descend briefly over Valdis, before all the light Raine's generated vanishes.]
no subject
Though he did watch as Raine cast her spells, that was interesting to him. Magic always had benen.]
no subject
Barrieren er brutt.
[Then her eyes open, but she appears panicked as she sits up. Her pupils are dilated, showing only a hint of green around the thin edges.]
Fadir is dead. Anton er død
.
[It is like she doesn't see them, as if she is only half awake. She tries to move from the table as she speaks, her voice thick with fear, but the moment she stands, she simply collapses to the floor, unconscious once again.]
no subject
Did she just ask for Anton?
no subject
Faðir-- I think that's something she calls him.
[Raine bites her lip. That's probably just a dream, disorientation, but all the same it's cause for worry. And in any case, Anton's presence can't hurt.]
[At Vergil:] Go get Anton. Quickly. He, too, has had some success at reaching her when she's-- unstable.
[She kneels after, by Valdis and Wan, reaching to check that Valdis is unharmed still.]
no subject
The jacket she is wrapped in is mine, do try to keep it from getting more bloody.
[ That was all he said before he vanished out the door to go get Anton. Vergil wasn't going to return himself. ]
no subject
We can dress her in my clothes if he's going to be like that. We should get her cleaned up anyway.
no subject
Yes-- there's little else to be done for right now. I'll need to keep an eye on her. That arte is almost certainly the place to start, but I'm missing something...
no subject
Wan. Raine.
[He inclines his head and move toward them, slightly less urgent now it's clearer as to Valdis's status.]
Vergil said there was trouble.
no subject
though he did consider it.]The darkness that Valdis fights is winning.
[Wan answered as he started to peal Vergil's coat off her so he could slip her arms into the sleeves of his shirt. Her body was still mostly in his lap.]
no subject
wan no][Raine helps Wan handle Valdis' limbs, glancing up only briefly when Anton enters to return the nod. A shame it's not better circumstances.]
She attacked someone and then fell comatose, apparently. I was able to rouse her for a few seconds. She asked for you, I think, or perhaps feared you were dead; it wasn't entirely the common tongue.
I know she's important to you, and we may yet need your influence to reach her.
no subject
Then I am here. Are there blankets? They shall be more useful until the blood has been cleaned, surely.
[There was no point in dressing her in clothes that would only become bloodied as a result of her being dressed.]
no subject
[And towels made poor shirts.
There may also have been a bit of protectiveness to his actions, the way he held her to his chest even after she was covered properly and all that.]
no subject
[Raine points Anton at a far cupboard, anyway, an absent gesture because she's more focused on the problem of Valdis. She sits back on her heels.]
I can try the same thing again, to see if she responds differently with your presence, but I doubt that will actually fix anything in the long term. I need--
[Raine's a little frustrated. She has half the solution, she's sure, but she hasn't the faintest idea where the other half is.]
I don't know what I need.
