Look and See Her, How She Sparkles, It's the Last Unicorn...
Characters: Valdis and YOU!
Date: The Last two weeks of July.
Location: Throughout Keeliai
Situation: Valdis has turned into a Unicorn
Warnings/Rating:Good Natured fluff (Aside from one thread)
She was alive. She had won. For now, at least, but Valdis would take what she could get. Returning to her home, however, was difficult, for the Midnight Hotel was no more and Anton was gone. Almost everyone she had cared about had left, her pack had grown far too small in the last year, but she could change that. She helped herself to some tea down in the kitchens, carrying it up to her room, sipping it as she went, suddenly incredibly thirsty as she hadn't drank anything for weeks. The first thing she noticed was that her room had been cleaned, but everything was still mostly as she had left it. Klaus had left things for her, two glass unicorns on her bedside table and Anton's tablet next to them. She burst into tears at the sight of them, finally able to mourn properly. She cried until she fell asleep, exhausted.
The last thing she expected was to wake up on the floor, feeling very strange. She yawned, shaking her head and lurching to her feet. Odd. She didn't remember shifting into a Hound. She looked down at her hooves and froze. Hooves? Frantic, she went to the mirror to looked at what had happened, quickly noting the spiral horn protruding from her head and the white mane and body. She had to be dreaming, there was no way in hell that she was actually a unicorn.

Pepper | The Shrine | Backdated to the 20th | CW: Blood
She curled up in the back of the shrine, ignoring the smell of old blood and the mats in her fur, watching her sword glow softly in the dim through narrowed green eyes.

It didn't take long to get there. She was nervous, certainly; Pepper didn't know exactly the extent of Valdis' powers but she's heard enough to be a little wary. Pepper retracted the faceplate as she landed, walking carefully towards the entrance of the shrine.
"Valdis? Are you still in there? It's Pepper," the redhead called, squinting into the darkness of the cave.
no subject
Don't come any closer.
She didn't want Pepper to see the bloodstains, or the state she was in, and not just for her pride.
no subject
"Are you-." She paused. Of course Valdis isn't okay. If she were okay she wouldn't be here. "I'm worried about you. I just want to help."
no subject
Valdis closed her eyes again, trying to curl up tighter.
I have to do this alone.
But she was alone, wasn't she. Anton was gone. Erskine was gone. She had no one to steady her now. No one that the Void feared to help her keep it in check. She whimpered softly. She still had Jackie and Pepper was here, checking on her. That had to count for something.
A low hissing sent a shiver down her spine, she supposed it would be too much to believe that it would back down so easily, the creature was nothing if not persistent.
Pepper, you need to leave.
She tried to keep the worry from her voice, but the feeling was so strong that she was certain she failed.
no subject
"You're not alone," she countered stubbornly. "And I'm not going anywhere." Because then Valdis would be alone, and that was so not happening. Something wasn't right here, and not just the obvious of having lost friends and family. She was glad she had taken to wearing the Duelist gauntlet and bringing her deck pretty much everywhere, just in case. "What's going on? Talk to me, you know I like to talk. I don't have to come in, we can talk like this."
no subject
Did Gene ever tell you about the time I almost killed him
The subject was grim, but if Pepper wanted to know, then Valdis didn't feel as if she could hold it back.
no subject
"No, he didn't. But he still works with you and still calls you a friend and trusts you, so if you're going to try to use that as a way to get me to leave, save your mental breath. I trust him and I trust you, whatever it is."
no subject
You said you wouldn't leave and I don't have the strength to argue with you about it. She replied. You asked what was going on... She hesitated.
I once told you that I'm a monster and you told me that wasn't true...but even if you are right, there is still no doubt that I have a monster inside of me. It is called the Void and it takes the form of a seven-headed serpent.
She began to cough, the sound amplified in the small space.
no subject
She added the Void to the list of dark, demonic things that lived inside her friends, and assigned it about the same amount of concern. Sure, bad, yes; respect the big bad for what it was and move on.
"Okay. Well. That doesn't sound like much fun." In fact it sounded awful, but until she knew more about the Void, Pepper didn't want to accidentally aggravate it more than she might already be doing. "Is it, uh, active? Nowish?"
no subject
No, it isn't fun and yes, it is active. But you seem to interest it.
Valdis didn't like that, not at all. The Void wasn't interested in people very often. It liked to taunt, it liked to tease, but true interest was rare.
The Void isn't unlike Zorc, it seeks destruction, chaos and death. It tried to destroy my soul once and if it weren't for Bakura, then it probably would have succeeded.
no subject
"I'm an interesting person. The Shadow Realm got interested in me really fast, too, last year. That turned out okay." Obviously this was not the same thing, but she could put on a brave front. As long as the Void wasn't trying to take a bite out of her face. "It's... what, trying to take advantage of you? Of what happened?"
To Anton and to our other friends went unsaid, and mostly unverbalized even in her thoughts. If Valdis could hear her thoughts, the Void must be able to as well.
no subject
Yes...
She sighed.
It is trying to break through the barrier surrounding my soul, hoping to consume it and 'save' me from the emotions that have caused so much suffering. I cannot eat. I cannot sleep. It reopens old wounds and lets them bleed. It whispers of my failings...
no subject
"It's wrong," Pepper said firmly. "It's wrong." She hesitated briefly, but continued. "I know... I know what it's like to lose a parent, I know how much that hurts. I know how much it doesn't make sense and how much it feels like the world is ending. And I also know that things keep going, and that you're not alone."
no subject
Valdis had no comforting words for the girl. She hadn't know that Pepper had lost a parent, it seemed there was much she didn't know.
If I truly believed I was alone, then I wouldn't still be fighting. I only separated myself from everyone so no one would get hurt.
no subject
It hadn't been doing this to her before, at least not recently, or to this extent. So there had to be a way to help; Pepper hated not being able to do anything.
no subject
She sighed, her breath rattling in her chest.
Perhaps Bakura might know something...some way I can better fight it.
no subject
"I can ask him. Or you can. I brought your radio. Well, you can't really use it right now, but... it's better than nothing. You'll have it when you change back."
no subject
She yawns, tired, perhaps the Void would let up long enough for her to get some sleep. Perhaps Pepper would stay with her and that would help keep the creature at bay. But there were so many variables...
Thank you for bringing the radio...I...you can come in, if you like...just...try not to panic. I look terrible.
Her fur was matted with dried blood and from the feel of the floor against her side, she was probably thinner than she should be. Damn that creature, breaking their deal before she was ready to.
