You're a satellite around my heart

Characters: Ava, Kara, and Zatanna

Kara didn't mind in the least going out just for desserts. In fact, she thought it was an excellent idea. And she didn't need to eat anyway, so it wasn't as though she was ruining some diet by having nothing but cake that cake.

Best of all, she thought, was going out to eat cake with a couple of good friends. There had been a long time where she wondered if she would ever go out with friends again, if it would ever be the same. In more ways than she had expected, it was exactly the same. They laughed, made jokes, talked about their mutual acquaintances.

Kara loved the normal life. That was why there was a smile on her face as the three sat down and were asked for their drink orders. This was about as normal as it could get, considering they were in a city built on the back of a turtle that magically translated everything they said.

Kara hummed thoughtfully. Even if Ava wasn't a teacher, it was a worthy ambition to set up a school. Still, she wasn't sure about that first argument.

"I guess I thought, since there's such a mixed bag of people that anybody could teach if they knew enough about a thing." Then she turned her attention on Zatanna, eager to include her other friend in the conversation.

"You could teach a class about magic, Zatanna. I'd sit in on that!"

Something told Zatanna that the comment about Ava's age was meant to insinuate something else, just going by the older girl's look. Casually, she rested against her elbow, taking a long sip of her water. Her matchmaking days were pretty much over by now; Ava would have better luck on her own.

"I suppose I could. Except I'm not sure I'd want all that extra work. Plus teaching magic in large groups is hard. One on one tutoring, maybe." And she playfully sent Kara a wink. "Depends on what kind tricks you're interested in."

"How large of a group would we be talking about anyway?" Don't think she didn't see that wink, you two. "I mean, you can only teach magic to people with a natural affinity anyway, right? So it'd be more like a discussion group."

"I just want to learn how it works." Kara held her hands up both to deny any idea that she wanted to learn to perform magic and... whatever that wink meant.

"I don't think I could use it anyway."

It meant she was being a tease again. Obviously. Just a joke, nothing more.

"Oh, I'm not talking about real magic. I mean, like stage tricks." She held up both hands, an odd touch of seriousness in her tone behind the otherwise casual demeanor. Magic, in either form, was one of the few things in life she took unequivocally seriously. "For one, it's not worth having my dad and Batman breathing over my shoulder. For another...like you said, Kara, anybody who couldn't do real magic wouldn't be able to learn, anyway."

Ava frowns a little at that revelation. "Is stage magic really practical, though? I mean, I'm all for every kind of learning, but we need magicians to fight what's coming, and it'd be better to have all of them on the same page."

Kara huffed a sigh. Stage magic was much less interesting than real magic.

"That's something completely different, Zatanna."

Sorry girls. Neither frown, nor huff, nor protest regarding degree of interest was going to budge her on that one.

"Oh, please, Ava. Any magic user on the Turtle already knows what they're doing, believe me. And a newbie on the battlefield wouldn't be much help, anyway." Rolling her eyes, she then turned to Kara. "Of course it is. But don't knock it until you've tried it."

Ava frowns at that suggestion. "There's always room for improvement. Coordinating and doing more research has to be better than just..." she pauses, trying to pick her words to not sound dismissive of stage magic. "hobbies?"

Kara rested her chin on her hands as she propped herself up on the table. She sighed.

"I just want to know more about magic."

"Except everybody's magic is different, Ava. I mean, even Traci and I don't use the same style, and we're not only from the same world, we're both homo magi."

Frown all you want, girl. She wasn't budging on that.

"What exactly did you want to know, Kara?"

Ava holds up her hands. "If you say so." She gives up on that tack for now. She looks over to Kara and contemplates the menu for a second. Junk food's on the way, after all.

"Everything," she declared with gusto. "I want to know magic like I know physics. Which is to say, all of the theory and none of the equations." She grinned sheepishly at her friends. She hated learning maths and physics, but she did learn it.

"I'm not exactly the end-all expert, you know. I only know the things my dad's taught me. Mostly specific to our family style."

Ava grins a little stupidly at Kara about that learning everything comment.

She can't help it if a desire for learning is something she finds attractive!

...What she can do is bury herself back in contemplating cake and let Zee and Kara talk.

"I'm still interested," she insisted, sounding more and more like a whiny nerd. "Maybe if I learn from everyone I'll be able to make some sense of it!"

Kara was almost cute when she whined, if she didn't remind Zatanna of one of Jack's minions (you know, those kedan kids he's always playing with whenever he can).

"Alright, then. We can make an afternoon of it sometime, deal? I'll show you everything I'm legally allowed to when it comes to my magic, and you'll...I don't know, come up with something to show me in return."

Ava's pretty sure this is a good opportunity for a joke. She just can't manage to come up with one.

Snarky comments are one area she DOES have to give Spider-Man the point in.

"Perfect." Kara straightened and grinned, for all the world as though the sulk of moments ago had never happened.

"How long do you think it'll take them to bring all our food?"

It was amazing what little it took to appease her sometime. Zatanna gave her friend a warm smile, lightly nudging her side in a teasing manner before turning back to Ava.

"Well...we kind of put in a big order, so I'd say..." Out of the corner of her eye, she caught a glimpse of their server approaching, a boy carrying a large tray of small plates behind. "Right about now?"

"Awesome!" Unlimited amounts of desert are enough to brighten Ava up even more than she already is.

...Well, not actually unlimited, but way more than she can eat.

"Sweet." She grinned at what she thought of as a clever pun. She had learned the exclamation from listening to others around the turtle. As the food was placed before them she watched eagerly and took in the various smells and the delicious-looking arrangements. It was almost like feeling actual hunger.

Zatanna would have grinned proudly at the pun, except she was too busy mentally claiming a bite of everything that immediately looked appetizing.

Like that one dish. Some sort of...peanut butter and chocolate mousse? Maybe? ...oh, no, wait, that tasted more like expresso than peanut butter. Mmmm.

Two bites in, and the fifteen-year-old was in heaven.

Ava laughs a little too much at that pun. It was super funny, right?

...Either way, they've got some kind of cheesecake. Or something like it. Something that she hasn't had since she got to the turtle.

Kara makes a cursory attempt to look dignified while she tries everything that's been laid in front of her. That effort ends almost immediately, as she begins making noises of approval at just about everything that enters her mouth.

Zatanna waited until she had at least one bite of everything within reach before looking up.

"Alright, ladies. Moment of Truth: any early favorites?"

"I can't decide." She shrugs and takes another bite of the cheesecake and something else intensely chocolately. "There's too much good stuff."

"My favorite is the food," Kara declared helpfully with a huge smile. It felt so good to just hang out with friends.

"You two aren't very good at this, are you?" Zatanna smirked, taking another bite of what looked like purple jello. Except it wasn't. "Come on, pick one thing."

"Food IS one thing," Ava points out so very helpfully.

"I like this one," Kara decided before popping a bite of food into her mouth. She didn't even look at the dish she picked it from.
