Grand Opening!

Location: Bryn's Unnamed Bar
Situation: It's time for a grand opening!

After weeks of scrimping and saving, planning, organizing, working every day to get everything just so, Bryn's tavern is finally ready to open. There were times she wasn't sure it was ever going to happen, because what did she know about running a business, having only been a customer all of her adult life? There was still a chance that this would spectacularly flop and she would be broke and back to square one again. But tonight isn't the night to worry about that. One thing Bryn does know how to do is throw a party.

So, the two story has been scrubbed and polished within an inch of its life. The lanterns inside and out are burning with fresh candles. The bar is fully stocked, the kitchen has been bustling all day with food preparations, and for tonight, the stage is occupied by some of Keeliai's finest and liveliest kedan musicians. At one corner corner of the first floor, a table with ten jars can be found. Before each jar is a suggested name for the new tavern, and baskets of smoothly polished pebbles to be used to cast votes. Each attendee is welcome to vote for the name of their choosing, and Bryn will call her tavern by whichever one is the most popular.

All that's missing are her guests, whom she hopes to keep as customers over the coming weeks, months, or however long Bryn's stay in the city is.

Lay 'em on me. I love Faz' bar, but I'm all for finding new places. [New places to celebrate, more fights, all that jazz. She loves the hustle and bustle.]

[He gives her a short list, including nearby planets she can find safe harbour in should she need to, as well as sector numbers.]

So - I'm not sure if the same Lanterns are still in those areas, but you should be fine if you mention knowing me or John.

All right. Thanks for the tips. Maybe I'll get lucky and run into Kilowog. [Now to see how much fun she can have there. But speaking of GLs.] Oh, I wanted to ask you. Is Hal Jordan always an ass? Not the rookie, the other one.

[You can tell by the exasperation she doesn't like him.]

[imaginate]

Say hi to him from me. I miss the big guy.

[Wistful, and then he frowns. Too much talk of Hal recently...]

What happened?

I will. Bet he misses you, too. [She catches the frown, and there's a few reasons it could be like that. So she'll go for the first one.] Do you not want to talk about him?

[imaginate]

[Despite the serious topic, he smiles. They were very close, back home.]

Don't let his attitude fool you. He can't not - he was all I had when I was trying to rebuild the Corps.

[Beat.]

Nah, I was just curious. He'd been the talk of the town recently.

[= 'everyone keeps asking me about my feelings I would like to return them to the shop now.']

[wingedwarrior]

--rebuild the Corps? [Those words are what she focuses on. "All I had when I was trying to rebuild the Corps." Any jovial attitude she had was gone, replaced by serious confusion.] Kyle, what the hell happened?

[imaginate]

[...]

[... well, fuck.]

[Time to rip off the band-aid. He sighs.]

I was the last Green Lantern in the universe.

[wingedwarrior]

[Her mouth falls open, and she can only blink as she processes the information. It's like all the air was sucked out of the room, that she forgot to breathe. She doesn't actually take in any air until a minute later. All her friends she made, gone.] John. He...

[She can't finish her sentence, and she already knows the answer without even having to ask. The last Lantern means the last.]

[imaginate]

[Oh crap. He waves, frantically.]

No, no, no! They're weren't dead! Well. Not all of them. Just. No more rings. John's alive!

[He moves over to her and rubs her shoulder anxiously, hoping nobody's staring.]

If he was dead I wouldn't have known him. Trust me. He's okay.

[wingedwarrior]

[And there's the biggest fucking sigh of the century. There's a shaky laugh on her end as she looks up with a small smile.] You gotta cut back on the dramatics.

[She takes a few deep breaths to calm herself down, giving the hand on her shoulder a thankful squeeze.] Sorry. I'm okay. But that still doesn't answer my question of what happened to the Corps.

[imaginate]

Sorry.

[A small smile.]

It's just - everyone knew, back home. And it hasn't happened in any of the other universes, I'm never sure whether to bring it up.

[He wouldn't. There's enough pain on his plate already without people looking at him and asking him how he felt, being the last of his kind.]

Space fear bug happened. It possessed Hal, used him to destroy Oa, the Battery, our rings, all of it. [He sighs.] That's how I came into the picture. There was only one working ring left and... I got it.

[He holds up his hand, to emphasise the point.]

You didn't notice it looks different from the others?

[wingedwarrior]

[She shouldn't be mad at Hal, she shouldn't. Superman went through the exact same shit. "Except he fought back" rang through her mind. And he isn't the cause of so much suffering for just one person.] I did. But I thought it might just be the different universe thing.

[She goes silent, trying to control her anger at the "space fear bug" and Hal Jordan.] The more I learn about you, the more I realize how strong you are.

[imaginate]

[Hey, he sees that anger and... he feels guilty for putting it there. Rubbing her shoulders gently to soothe her.]

C'mon, one Lantern for the entire universe? It was nothing. And... it's not really his fault that thing took him and used him.

[wingedwarrior]

That's not nothing. [First thing out of her mouth. Nothing about anger or hatred or the need to punch someone. She sighs, frustrated before continuing.] I know, I shouldn't be. The same thing happened with Superman, Darkseid got control of him, and had him attack Earth, I know about mind control.

[That won't stop her from being pissed as shit at Hal.] It's probably not my place to say it since I barely know him, but you sure seem like a hell of a better GL than he does.

[imaginate]

I know about it, too.

[It's been tried so many times; Kyle's lost count. He doesn't need to say it - and doesn't want to - Shayera knows what people are willing to do to gain power and well. The last green ring in the universe, left with somebody who wasn't even trained? She can guess at what happened. He doesn't want to relive it in words, even if she's the one asking.]

You and James, you're a pair, y'know.

[He's too tired to fight this. He drags his glass over and drinks.]

No idea why you keep saying that.

We talked about this, Kyle. [Love isn't something you understand. They talked (well, Shayera did) about it not too long ago, and she's still trying to make it stick. The mind control part is what really gets her. Just that one simple line and she can guess what happened.

Something about the way he drinks makes her stop for the time being, though.] I told you why we do this.

[imaginate]

[Tired:] I know.

[He sips, carefully. He's in a Mood, and alcohol doesn't help. He's not going to make bad choices today.]

You know what he said? "Think about me telling you about what you've done, pretend it's some other guy." Not so many words, but [he sighs.] You're right, you both are. It's insane. Nobody should be able to do any of that, let alone make it through.

[wingedwarrior]

[There's a triumphant smirk on her face for a brief few moments. Go Jim. She's going to have to thank him for that one later.] But you did. Not Hal Jordan. Not the Guardians. Just you. You're the strongest person I've met, and there's no other GL I'd rather be siblings with.

[imaginate]

[He leans in to her space, just slightly, and quietly sips his drink.]

[wingedwarrior]

Hey. [She taps his glass.] Make good choices. There, I've been a good big sister for the day. [Half-assed attempt to lighten the mood, yes it was. She pulls him a little closer, as if to invite him to lean on her if he wants to.]

[imaginate]

[He grins at her, appreciating the gesture and not.. accepting the offer just yet. It's still a very public place.]

Don't worry. I'm always responsible. I think I can count on one hand the times I've been too drunk to go home.

[wingedwarrior]

[She'll leave the silent offer open, for whenever he wants it.] That's a load off my mind, I wouldn't want to drag you home just to have you hurl on my floor. Still, I'll be watching your drinking like a hawk.

[There's a brief pause, and all she does is point at him.] Not one word.

[imaginate]

[He stares at her, and then bursts into helpless laughter.]

[Oh, you know what, she's just going to shove you, who cares if they're in public.] I said don't say anything!
