[He's said 'fine' that way enough times to know the level of not-fine things are for Percy. Back in Kansas, 'I'm fine' is code for 'It's something I don't want to talk about' or 'I have to deal with it on my own', maybe. So he's glad they are not in Kansas and he can pretend he doesn't understand the code.]

It doesn't look like they are fine, son. If I can't help by talking, maybe I can help by sparring?

[His shoulders tense, and Superman is about to deal with a giant mess of raging teenage boy when the rest of his sentence catches up with Percy.

He scowls, but manages to keep his cool] I don't know if it would work. [His tone is short again] I mean, you're still mortal, right? Riptide doesn't work against mortals. And I'd probably break my hand if I tried hitting you.

[It wouldn't be the first time, and certainly not the last. Kal isn't exaggerating when he says he doesn't get along with teenagers, even though he seems to have gotten a little better at it ever since he landed on the turtle. It's probably just a mixture of butting in where he's not wanted and being slightly condescending.

The fact that Percy bothered replying to the sparring suggestion is a good thing, so Kal makes a mental note to avoid outright talking about whatever the problem might be.]

I died, once, so I guess it doesn't count even if it didn't take. Does your sword only harm immortal beings? What material is it made of?

Uh - celestial bronze. It can only harm things with immortal blood. And kedan, weirdly. I swung it a a moal once - um, accidentally - and it went right through her.

If it only harms immortal blood and it's able to harm Kedan perhaps it says something about the Kedan themselves...

[There are so many things Percy could say to that, he's not sure where to start.] That sounds really...Greek. [AKA messed up.

He rubs the back of his neck] I don't - it might be that it doesn't hurt mortals more than it does hurt immortals if that makes sense? So they could be something else. You'd have to ask Annabeth, to be honest. I'm just the guy that hit things.

[Kal isn't stupid, far from it- but when you have a ratio of 1:3 super geniuses on the team and you're married to Lois Lane you learn to sit back, punch whatever you're told to punch and enjoy the ride.] Do you mind if I share what you've told me about the sword and the Kedan with a friend? I trust him with his life, he won't tell anyone if you don't want him to- but he's incredibly smart.

Scarily so. He might come up with some theories.

Um. [He pauses for a second] I don't mind if you tell someone you trust but try...not to spread it around? I don't really want people knowing that our weapons might not be effective against them. [Of course, it's only now that he thinks of that]

[He raises a hand] I can keep it a secret if you would rather, son. I was simply curious.

No, I don't - I mean, if you trust the guy, go ahead. Just don't shout it from the rooftops, or anything.

[A twitch of his lips] I promise you I won't, and trust me when I say my friend knows how to keep a secret.

[He smiles, but there's a bitter twist to it. It's not Kal's fault, though] If you can't trust Superman, who can you trust?
