The smokey, warm home of the wood miners guild. This is a thriving secondary industry, with the center of town being devoted to an elevator that descends into a large cavern in which a strange form of fungus grows that possesses many of the same traits of wood. The majority of the town works at some job related to the Rhook fungus, either in the mining or the processing of it. They build and sell beautiful Rhook furniture, carts, and other wood-based paraphernalia here. A number of auctions are held here, with the items often bearing a smokey scent or bit of ash - explained as having been recovered from the ashes of a recent fire.

All visitors must report to their customs entry, an easy diversion given that it is the only entry into the town. Provision of an adequate gift will result in their tin visa being stamped with a series of lines that looks like the rings of a tree. The police here are marginally more relaxed about proof of identification, but they are sharply on the lookout for arson and any property-related crimes. There is a smokey scent hanging in the air and a whole section of the city is little more than a warm, charred cinder. Questions about this earn the explanation of a dark mindset overcoming half the residents of that area only two months back and it worsened quickly into strife. One night, the area went up in flames and many of the residents perished with their homes and nearly the whole town was lost. Since then, they have been careful about fires and changes in personality both, with many residents currently residing in jail until their foul tempers dissipate.

[Such a great Pontmercy friend he is! Even if he has no sense of fashion... At all. Courfeyrac stares at the-- can it actually be a hat? Really?]

No, not that one at all. Though I am particularly concerned that this is considered fashionable...

[He can be taught! Ladies and gentleman, Courfeyrac has taught his Pontmercy friend a new trick: sniffing out decent hats! And recognizing not-so-decent ones.]
saisamour: (scared what i'll take from you darling)

[Marius turns his attention back to the hat, considering Courfeyrac's words. He does admit that it looks alarming, almost scary even, like the beginnings of a monster born from the horror stories conjured to scare particularly naughty children. He supposes that should not be considered fashionable even in a winter continent such as this, so he does hum in agreement even as he turns it in his hands.

The shopkeeper insists on him trying it, however, and Marius, at a loss at what to do and fearful of impoliteness, tentatively raises it to his head.

A startled yelp leaves him as the hat sinks and covers his entire face.]

[Courfeyrac, meanwhile, is trying his hardest not to fall over laughing as Marius actually puts the hat on and covers his whole face. He reaches over and lifts it just barely, grinning at him as soon as his eyes are visible again.]

Positively dashing, Pontmercy.

[Smirking, he turns to the shopkeeper and hands over some money.]

It fits him like a glove, we'll take it.
saisamour: (darkness darkness everywhere)

[Marius opens his mouth to protest, but the shopkeeper is already happily accepting the money and he dare not say anything to ruin the mood. He does take the hat off, though, holding it in his arms until the shopkeeper attends to another customer and is well beyond earshot.]

Courfeyrac, what am I to do with this now?

[He sounds and looks positively distressed, as Courfeyrac had not only bought him something, but an object he had no intention of using, at that.]

Well it would be rude not to wear it while we are here.

[He's trying not to laugh, Marius. We're so sorry.]

But we'll figure something out, he just looked too happy when you had finally put it on. I couldn't upset him.
saisamour: (a silent devotion)

[OH NO WHAT DOES HE DO

He does not want to appear rude but THIS HAT IS RIDICULOUS.]

I-I do not feel that cold.

[But he no longer protests Courfeyrac actually purchasing it for him, not after the reason he had just given.]

Now you will surely not feel that cold! What a relief!
saisamour: (still here i stand i am sinking)

Perhaps it has its uses...

[Even though the look he gives the ball of fur in his arms is a little forlorn...

In any case! He gives Courfeyrac a sideways, inquisitive glance.]

But what of your own hat?

[Because it does not appear that Courfeyrac will find one that appeals to his tastes, at this rate.]

[No, he doubts he will find one appealing in this strange place. He smiles and shrugs his shoulders.]

If nothing else, my friend, I can always visit Alcuin's shop and request one be made.
