Maybe it's because she hasn't lived through eons like Asti has?

[Frank keeps on petting the girl, since she seems to like it. Part of him is already taking mental notes of everything- the muscles, the shell, the eyes, the movements... a habit he picked up when he realized the more he knew about an animal the stronger his transformation would be.] Annabeth suggested I could turn into the baby turtles instead of the big one, to get more information. But I'm not sure I could.

That's very possible. She's very new to this world and everything in it, though she learns quickly. [There's a soft hint of a chuckle to the thought.]

It may or may not be possible depending on why it was so difficult to shift into Asti. Maybe the smaller size would make it easier?

[He silently hums to himself, something he always does when he thinks and hadn't stopped doing when he lost his voice.]

Size was definitely an issue since I reached the barrier, but I have never felt so... [He frowns glaring at the floor. He's never tried sending a feeling or emotion, not a word through their mental link but now he finds he'd really like to try. It'd make it easier.] Fullness? I couldn't comprehend it.

[Arthur looks thoughtful as well, perching on the edge of Rio's shell. Even his weight doesn't seem to bother her, she's just content to try for attention and snack on potted plants and the large melons Arthur had brought her.] Size definitely wouldn't be an issue with turtles this age. Plus, the barrier is still wider than it was. [He doesn't quite 'get' what Frank is trying to say, but he can guess, at least. Something was different about that transformation versus others.]

Theoretically, it should work for you, but it's possible it won't. Perhaps your issue physically is similar to the reason Percy and I can't make telepathic contact with Asti on our own.

[He nods, but it's clear the answer doesn't please him. Not because Arthur is wrong, but because it's frustrating to have finally found some limitations for his powers.]

What words does she know? [Changing the subject aw yus]

[An understandable feeling, and Arthur doesn't push it. He wants to encourage Frank, not discourage him, but sometimes you just have to be realistic about things.]

Not a whole lot yet, though she picks them up fast when you explain something to her. Would you like to teach her some?

[He nods, his attention fully focused on the baby turtle now. He's a Roman centurion, he wouldn't have thrived in that environment if he hadn't learned to focus.]

Do I think it to her or type it so she hears it?

Speaking would probably be easier at first. It'll probably take some time and work to really do much with a telepathic connection.

[iguanasolution]

[He nods, and simply types his name at first. The voice is mechanical and without tone, and yet Frank's expression makes the hesitation clear.]

[The turtle watches him curiously, peering from his mouth to his wrist. It takes a moment, but she eventually seems to figure out that that's how he speaks, and tries to nuzzle him. Granted, she's huge, so it's a little less than gentle, and then it comes telepathically loud and clear from her, "Frank!"]

[iguanasolution]

[Frank laughs at the nuzzle- it does manage to force him and move but he doesn't mind, he just pets her gently. He's never had a pet turtle so he isn't sure what they like but she's the one nuzzling him. He'll go with it.]

My name is Frank. I am Arthur's [He tries not to hesitate, he tries- but he still glances at Arthur for a second before typing] friend.

[She seems to like it well enough, all things considered, and takes to the petting immediately and happily.]

Yes. This is my friend. [He confirms to the turtle with a small smile, stroking her head.] I think she likes you.

[iguanasolution]

[He smiles a sheepishly at the confirmation (he's friends with a sea king!) then he puts his whole attention back on the turtle.]

I like you too. We should play some. Would you like to play with me?

[relentlesstide]

[The sheepish smile prompts a slight one from Arthur, too; he likes the kid, all things considered. He's always had a bit of a soft spot for teenagers.

Rio'era seems thrilled at the idea of play, and gives him another affectionate headbutt.]

She hasn't quite grasped the concept of her own size, but she's getting there.

[Frank raises an eyebrow at Arthur as if saying 'do you think I can't handle it?'. He might not be the cockiest teenager but he's still a teenager, and teenagers are naturally cocky most of the time.

He motions at him to step back, he's got this. If Arthur listens to him, soon there will be a (baby turtle-sized) elephant where Frank once was.]

[It was more a light warning and less him thinking Frank can't handle it, but when he motions to, Arthur steps back and laughs a little as he watches him shift into an elephant.]

That will take care of the size issue.
