Characters: Sabriel and You
Date: Throughout March!
Location: Various
Situation: Various- pick one, or write up a threadstarter of your own.
Warnings/Rating: Probably none.
[Open; turtlesitting]
Sabriel's favorite thing to do with Kalliel when it was her turn to take care of him was to climb onto his back and read to him- although today, as the turtle paddled through the canals of the Water Sector, her book lay unopened in her bag as she told Kalliel about her students- both the ones still in Keeliai and the ones who had left- and about Amon.
It helped, to talk to someone else about it, and eventually Sabriel pulled out the book she'd brought- another volume of kedan poetry- and began to read.
[Open; Shopping]
One advantage of living in the Water Sector was easy access to the shops that sold fresh produce- and while Sabriel was not much of a cook, her Sending was.
Sabriel browsed through the stalls curiously, chatting with some of the vendors and picking up enough fruits and vegetables to last her for the next few days.
[Closed to Hans; Lessons]
Sabriel had chosen a spot about a fifteen minute's walk outside of Keeliai's walls for this lesson. Battle magic could be dangerous enough- and though Hans had mastered the simpler spells she'd taught him, Sabriel had no desire to create a situation where a single mistake might lead to property damage and harming innocent bystanders. Her own experience of losing control of a fire spell at school and almost burning the gardener were warning enough.
Hence, this relatively isolated spot, with targets made out of salvaged bits of lumber. As Sabriel waited for her student to arrive, she conjured a ball of fire the size of her head and let it hover between her palms, holding it steady as she waited for her student to arrive.
[Closed to Hayley; Lessons]
This lesson was something Sabriel could teach at her suite, and she sat at the kitchen table with one of her spellbooks opened to a chapter on healing marks. Given the purpose they'd been summoned for, they would need healers as well as warriors- and while Hayley was learning at a reasonable pace, Sabriel would rather see her working as support, rather than fighting on the front lines.
Hayley might be her youngest student, but with the recent departure of Alcuin and Javert, she was one of the students she'd been teaching the longest- and unlike Marius, Hayley did not fumble simple spells out of pure anxiety.

As such, he's smiling brightly as he approaches Sabriel, lifting his hand so as to give her a small wave before stopping so he can watch the ball in awe. Again, he's full of that childish sort of fascination, but at least he's remaining reserved about it.
"It's beautiful." He observes with a small nod.

Hans's excitement and fascination with magic is- well, it was flattering, and it reminded Sabriel of her own childhood, and her and her classmate's eagerness to study and practice Charter Magic. The smile on her face grew a little bit wider.
"This spell is relatively simple- it only contains five marks. Most spells intended for combat are simple- it makes them easier to cast quickly, although they can be dangerous if mishandled."
Sabriel demonstrated, tracing the marks out into the air and letting them wrap around each other and expand, gold shifting into red and orange. One of the marks was the same one used for the lighter-spell she'd taught him during their first lesson.
shopping
One of the problems with shopping on his own was being so small. He could barely see over some of the stalls and often got lost in the crowd.
He was stood on his tiptoes trying to reach on of the apples at the back of the stall. Sanshi offered to help, but he didn't think her manifesting in the middle of the crowd was a good idea. So he leaned over, hoping he didn't knock anything over in the process.
Re: shopping
"Do you need any help?"
Re: shopping
"Um... I'm just trying to get an apple... Sorry..." He shuffled his feet.
Re: shopping
"My name is Sabriel- have you been in Keeliai for very long?"

"Um... I'm Taiki... I've been here a few weeks..."
no subject
"And people have been kind to you?" It was unfair, Sabriel thought, that a child would be dragged into this mess.

Sabriel's lessons were one of the few ways Hayley was starting to feel like she could fight back and make things happen, that she didn't have to be the scared little girl it seemed like people kept trying to force her to be.

This particular chapter contained not only marks and descriptions of how they could be used, but also illustrations that despite their archaic style seemed more suited to an anatomy or medical textbook than a spellbook.
"Hayley," She said, "Let's get started. This isn't exactly something we can practice easily, but I will ask you to show me that you can pull the marks of these spells out of the Charter by the end of the lesson."
so sorry for the delay!!
"Pull the marks out?" She was used to picturing them or drawing them in the air. Pulling symbols from the Charter sounded like a new skill entirely and, while grateful to be advancing, was another thin she wasn't certain she was entirely ready for. Not that she'd admit to that.
The girl nodded and turned her attention to the book, noticing the anatomical nature of it and wondering if they were going to be discussing pressure points or something. She tensed slightly.

"Anything beyond minor healing spells requires some knowledge of anatomy, except for spells designed to ward off infections or cleanse poison from someone," Sabriel explained, "If you want to repair something, you need an idea of what it will look like once you fix it."

"Can I borrow this book when we're done? I'd really love to study it."
Sorry for the delay
"But for now," Sabriel said, tapping one of the pages, "Try to memorize all the marks described on this page. Of which there were six, each with a paragraph describing its function and mentioning how it might be used in combination with other marks.

Then her attention was back on the page, staring at the marks as indicated. "You want me to memorize all six of these right now? I'm not a genius and I don't have any.. photographic memory or whatever."
Sorry this is late
