Characters: Korra (
alphatar), Mako (
firethepolice), Zatanna (
backwordscompatible)
Date: March 29th
Location: Jade School of Kung Fu dojo
Situation: Korra tells Mako of her alternate memories from Kithika, Zatanna finds them later
Warnings/Rating: References to death
The loose, flowing blue work out pants Korra was wearing caught the air as she brought her leg up to execute a perfectly placed high kick on the punching bag. Letting out a gruff grunt, she repeated it again and was determined to complete her set when she heard that she wasn’t alone.
After making sure everyone left, Korra had spent the past two hours getting a fierce exercise and training session going. As her bare feet padded quietly across the floor, she brought her navy blue tank top up to wipe off the sweat from her face and stopped walking when she rubbed her chin with her shirt.
"Mako? What’s up?"

"Mako? What’s up?"

And she didn't want it to leave them just yet.
Korra looked back up to the half-moon and stars, and as childish as it was; she liked to think the hill they were on pushed them just a little closer to them. Of course it wasn't the case, she'd flown above the clouds before. Looking over at Mako, she gave a grin.
"You gonna finish that?" Yes, that one dumpling in particular.

He was glad that she seemed to be feeling better, though. He looked upwards as well, wondering if that was the same moon that looked over Republic City. Probably not, if he knew anything about astronomy at all, but there was some hope that maybe, just maybe it was. He finished the dumpling and then reclined back, next to Korra.
This had been pretty good.
This time, he was the one to change the topic. That was enough about Kithika and home. Time to talk about something light hearted. The conversation was decidedly more easy going at that point, and he didn't mind telling Korra more about some of the stupid things he and his brother had done.
In parks.
So it was sort of relevant.
But time passing and the night being relatively pleasant, and Mako didn't want to end the conversation earlier than he had to. Trailing off and eventually losing track of where his consciousness was, he eventually ended up falling asleep, and not paying attention to how in the end, Korra was curled up right next to him, her hand resting on his chest, and his head inclined towards her.

To be more specific, she spotted Mako, having yet to recognize the obvious female figure curled into him. They were on a hill not too far from her treehouse, and from the distinct lack of movement, she could tell they they were both asleep. And she grinned. A date, maybe? How precious.
"Where's a camera when you need one?" She murmured softly to herself, and was about to be on her way when the moon came out from behind a cloud, revealing the aforementioned female figure.
It was Korra.
She froze in place, lips parted in...honestly, she didn't even know what anymore. Surprise? Nope. These two were way above and beyond surprise. Confusion? Well, that was a given. Were they back together? Again? Even though Korra had insisted that their last breakup had been final.
"...okay, no, seriously, where's a camera when you need one?" She echoed once more. Perhaps a little louder than intentioned.

but that wasn't her bed. A few pats later she realized that was Mako.
Her eyes shot open and the first thing she saw was him right next to her, and grass, and then the open sky, and finally she sat up to see Zatanna. Korra's eyes widened and she instantly made some distance between herself and Mako, all while keeping her eyes moving between him and Zee.
"Uh- wait." her voice was groggy from just waking up and she cleared it. "No, it- I mean," She wasn't even sure if Zatanna had asked her a question or not, but she felt like giving some kind of answer was needed here. Of course her increasingly panicked tone wasn't helping.
no subject
Shit.
"This isn't what it looks like," he finally says, holding his hands up in an expression of innocence. "This-- I mean- we just lost track of time. That's all."
no subject
Her eyes glanced between the two for a long moment. Korra's sudden lack of ability to talk. Mako's equal difficulty in forming words. What, did they think she was going to get mad?
After what must have felt like an eternity to the couple(?)...Zatanna laughed.
"Oh, I know the feeling. Cuddling under the stars tends to have that effect."
no subject
"We weren’t- cuddling!" She got to her feet and dusted off her pants of any grass in the sunlight, the light breeze helping a little.
She was about to reach her hand out to offer Mako help, but stopped mid-movement lest that give Zatanna something else to remark on. Everything in that moment felt too awkward to do. An excuse, she needed an excuse to bail her out of this situation and she needed on fast.
Which was why she turned to Mako. If anything, he would find a way to duck out of this and she could just follow that example.

Repeating Korra was the easy part. Mako also had a way of getting his embarrassment under control when he really needed to. "Look, we fell asleep. That's all. There's nothing else to have 'a feeling' about." He glanced at Korra, and then back at Zatanna.
Yeah, ducking out of this arrangement was probably what he needed to do. "Anyway... I'm out of here. See both of you later"
Sometimes, it really was that simple.
no subject
Oh.
Zatanna stared after Mako's retreating form for a moment, even more shocked now than the moment she had first caught them together. So shocked, it never even dawned on her she could just as easily have pulled him back magically. Not until after he was long gone.
Silence hovered in the air, until eventually, she turned back to Korra. Jaw still slightly agape.
"Did he just...leave?"
no subject
Korra gave a flat "Yes." Obviously, this wasn't her first account of Mako taking an exit out of an uncomfortable situation.
"It happens. You get used to it." No one did really, even Korra had times where she would hunt him down later and address the issue he was avoiding.
no subject
"No. You don't get used to it. That's not...ugh, what is his problem?" Things to get used to did not involve getting involuntarily thrown under the bus in a situation that involved, at worst, a little bit of private embarrassment and a decent talk amongst friends. "Honestly, I'm tempted to ask what your problem is, too, except I'm sure you don't need to hear that right now."
no subject
But she did fold her arms over her chest and lean back slightly. "My problem? I'm fine, I don't have any problem with Mako or with you." Why she was suddenly put under the spot light left her looking at Zatanna with a quizzical look that had a hint of a pout in her bottom lip.

"Besides, we weren't even supposed to be here." She shrugged. "We got carried away talking about home." Among other things like her alternate life and its craziness, something Korra needed to do.
no subject
"Look, Korra. I'm like the last person to judge right now..." (and, for once, this was actually true) "...but you told me you two broke up. And what I saw was not two people who had broken up. Which, if it's not true, then congrats. But if it is true...."
She trailed off, not knowing what to say. Which she demonstrated by shrugging.
"That must've been some conversation you two were having."
no subject
For Korra all of it was simple as day, they just hung out outside. On a hill. With dinner, and moonlight.
And fell asleep.
Simple.
"We're just friends."
no subject
"And you're...okay with that?"
no subject
She inclined her head slightly. "It's been working great so far." And that was said in honesty. They had been able to talk to each other a lot more now that they couldn't focus so heavily on.each.other.
no subject
Now if only Zatanna had a inkling as to what Korra's apparent definition of 'working great' was.
But. Alas.
"If you're sure." Even though she was sure Korra was sure at all. "...though I still might have to smack him a bit for up and leaving like that. I mean, even if you two really are just friends, that was pretty rude."
no subject
"Trust me, he’s like that most of the time if he doesn’t know you that well." She left it up to Zatanna to how she learned that one.

"I should go too, I wasn't planning on sleeping out here past dawn. Talk to you later?" She wasn't brushing Zatanna off, but now wasn't a good time for the subject.

"Sure thing. We'll make an afternoon out of it. Haven't done one of those in a while."
