Date: Prior to the start of Kaine's mission to the Endai island
Location: Peter's suite
Situation: Kaine figures he'll need the invisibility function of his old suit for the mission he's been assigned. Only problem is, he gave it to Peter... and he doesn't want Peter to know he's taking it back.
Warnings/Rating: PG-13 for Kaine's mouth.


[Kaine stays in the shadows near Peter's suite, waiting for him to go out "crime fighting" (seriously, someone needs to come up with a better name for that) for the night. As far as he knows, his old Scarlet Spider suit is still in Parker's place, despite Kaine's multiple suggestions to take it to Stark's and study the damn thing. Now, he's hoping the kid never took his advice, because there's no way in hell he could break into Stark Tower (...or whatever the hell it's called here) undetected, and he isn't feeling particularly suicidal today. Should the suit not be there, well, then he'd think of another plan.

The easiest plan would be to just, you know, ask Peter for the suit back, but that involved getting into a huge conversation about how it's only temporary and that he is most definitely not going back to being the Scarlet Spider. Even if everyone keeps telling him to do it, even goddamn strangers. And so he waits.

Luckily, he doesn't have to wait too long before he sees Peter leave to go do his thing, and Kaine slips around to the side of the building to do his. He'd noticed on his last visit that Peter keeps his windows unlocked, and though he warned Peter about that unsafe habit of his, he doubted the kid actually did anything about it, much in the same way he knew it was a lost cause to get Aracely to stop reading his mind. Which was his gain, as he was easily able to lift the open window and slip inside.

Kaine pulls his mask down off his face and gets to work, trying to go through Peter's place as quickly as possible, preferably without leaving a trace. That shouldn't be a problem, as Peter was a fairly messy kid and Kaine highly doubts he'd notice a few moved piles of clothing. Basically, he had accounted for everything.

Except Peter coming back so soon.]

Because if you don't, we're going to have a tussle, you're going to get your ass kicked, and I'm going to take it anyway. [He's quite confident you'll lose, Peter. Mainly because any version of you hasn't beaten him yet.]

[The most immature part of Peter, somewhere in the back of his mind, he wants to giggle at the word "tussle." Probably because it sounds like "tuchus." And that's hilarious.]

Am I allowed to ask why you're doing this something that's clearly a bad idea, or does breathing a word of it give Voldemort a ping?

The only bad idea, Parker, was not waiting to make sure you were gone for the night.

This thing I need this for... [Gets sidetracked at the mention of the Harry Potter villain.] ...What the hell is Voldemort?

[That... makes Peter blink in surprise.] You're kidding. You never saw any of the Harry Potter movies?

Not this time, Parker. I don't have time for you or your mouth.

That the kid with the glasses or something?

Oh, ouch. That- That actually hurt. [Which he emphasizes by placing a hand right over his heart, because obviously that's where the wound is. Right? Right.]

No, that's the main character. Voldemort's the big bad with no nose that wants him dead. And no one's ever allowed to say his name.

I really don't have time for the pop culture lesson.

[Lets out an annoyed grunt and goes right back to tearing Peter's place apart. He was going to be neat about it, but...]

[Peter tilts his head to one side thoughtfully. Kaine's in a hurry. He's not willing to talk about what he's up to or why. He's even less responsive to his quipping than usual.

He also still hasn't just gone and asked for the suit properly.]

You know, I appreciated it when you were being careful with my stuff. Can you go back to being careful with my stuff?

[Maybe he'll tell you what this is all for after the fact. If he and the other two guys he's supposed to be working with don't kill a president.]

There's an easy way to make me stop, Parker.

There's also an easy way for you to get what you're looking for.

[Is he being cheeky? Yes, Peter's definitely being cheeky. He excels at cheeky when he's suited up.]

I'm doing something classified that requires a stealth suit.

That's as specific as I'm going to get, now give it, Parker or I'll tear this place apart looking for it.

[Peter just stares at him for a moment, studying him. And then he turns around and starts walking toward the couch, where there sits an inconspicuous looking backpack.]

Seriously, you could at least say please.

Can you at least tell me what this is all about when it's done?

[Pulls his mask down so he can properly glare at him... only to wish he hadn't after Peter's question.]

I don't want to make any promises I'm not sure I can keep. [Because after their talk about him being a murderer, he doesn't know how well Peter would take it that he potentially plans to murder someone else in the name of protecting him.]

[nerdylilspidey]

[He hesitates for a second before reaching to pick the backpack up, glancing back over at Kaine.]

... Is this your way of telling me that you're not sure if you're coming back from this, or- what?

[Or is it something else entirely. Peter's not an idiot, and as much as he trusts Kaine and his judgement, he knows the tight-lipped bit doesn't mean anything good.]

...Both. [Pulls off one of his gloves so he can shoot a web strand at the backpack and pull it towards him.]

[nerdylilspidey]

[Peter frowns as Kaine webs the backpack over to him, pulling off his mask as he looks at him. The concern is clear in his expression, even as his jaw clenches slightly.]

Pretty sure I shouldn't have to say that I really don't like the idea of you running off to get yourself killed.

You get that line from Mary Jane or your Aunt? [Why yes, he is going for the jugular on purpose.

Kaine opens the bag to make sure the costume is in there, pulling it partway out with his free hand to make sure it's still wearable.]

[nerdylilspidey]

[He almost visibly flinches at that, dropping his gaze to the floor. Hearing that really actually does sting. This really is a case of the pot calling the kettle black, and Peter's not sure what to do about it.]

...It's not like I wanted to get killed, you know. What you're doing -- Whatever it is you're up to -- You're seriously gonna get hurt doing it.

[Shit, he didn't mean the time he actually died. Stupid.]

Parker, I... this is something I have to do. [Because if he succeeds he'll make things safer for Peter and May.] I know the risks.

[Peter really never thought he'd be in this position. To be the one left behind to worry.
