[OPEN] Eshai Memorial Hospital May catch-all

Situation: General Hospital a la Turtle-back
Warnings/Rating: It’s a hospital, there will probably injuries/blood/etc at some point.

There are still signs of the damage taken in the bombings, but repairs are taking place and are obviously not keeping the hospital from its usual busy schedule. Some of the work seems to be plumbing related: with the city water contaminated, they are trying to get a back-up system in place easier to keep purified, and sometimes some of the staff and volunteers can be found doing just that. Everyone needs sanitary water.

Some of the rooms have been reassigned uses until the repairs are finished, usually in favor of keeping intensive care as flexible as possible. First aid training still takes place in the classroom on the third floor, along with classroom-friendly aspects of field training.

Upon request, the list of active field medics will be provided by the front desk, along with who is currently on-call.

Septimus has been very much regretting that he hasn't been able to do as much field duty as he'd like--he likes being hands-on when he can. He's still debating who to designate as a second-in-command to handle some of the logistics, and once he has, he'll be able to get out more.

As it is, 'breaks' for him currently constitute making notes on an idea he's had kicking around since it became obvious the spores were around until further notice. He's rereading those notes as he walks into the staff lounge.

Making his way to make some tea for himself--as strong as he can make it--he glances up. "What's the book?"

"Anatomy," Zelgadis said. "I never learned much healing beyond having to patch myself up, and some things picked up here and there, so Bianca had me making up for what I missed. And learning what some of the machines and drugs here do."

Zelgadis did know more than he let on about herbs, mostly from following his grandfather the priest around, but even an actual priest from his world would probably be a bit overwhelmed at the technology.

"What about you? What are you working on."

Septimus makes a face--and frankly, it would suit a teenager far more than it does a highly accomplished military commander of nearly thirty years. "Anatomy I have some understanding of," mostly how to break it, "and a few other aspects of healing, but I've never really grasped all the... technology and such. Though I think one of these is rather like one of the painkillers we have at home." Aspirin is multiversal.

Septimus likewise has a certain familiarity with Aleran remedies, but when it comes to technology and pharmaceuticals? He gets rather lost.

"Bianca was always somewhat disappointed in me for not studying it as I should," he adds before glancing down at the notes. "Setting up a better early warning system on those blighted, crowbegotten spores."

"Some of them do come from herbs I know. I gather Bianca wasn't used to having many white magic users on call."

He looked up. "Has there been another attack, or is it just spread from the first ones?"

"I'd noticed that as well," he agrees. "White magic?"

Septimus's expression grows notably testy--obviously not at Zelgadis, but he is noticeably more irritable at the thought. "They're still getting in the water and food stores; people will keep coming in with this if we don't get it figured out. But until we can, I'm making bloody certain none of them get in here."

"I'll make sure to remind people when I'm out. Try to find ways they can clean the water. At least most of the food becomes literally wretched when the spores get into it." Zelgadis had been hungry before, but he can't imagine ever being that hungry. He suspects trying to eat the spore-rotted food would just bring up whatever was in his stomach.

"White magic is what we use for healing back home. Those spells are also useful for protection and exorcism of ghosts. Also a few odd things like light spells and spells for locking and unlocking."

"What I wouldn't give for even a third of my usual attachment of watercrafters and a proper Tribune Medica," he sighs--forgetting for a moment that Zelgadis has no real context for Aleran military logistics and terminology. It is the Legion Captain leaking through.

The description of white magic leaves Septimus blinking. "That is a rather strange and varied set of applications." And it makes no sense.

"Yeah, it's the sort of thing that has theorists puzzled why one energy source can be used for so many things. At it's heart, it's powered by the energy from life," Zelgadis said.

He didn't know what Septimus was talking about in specific, but the sentiment was there.

Septimus considers this for a moment. "Interesting." To put it mildly. "What about your elemental talents? Do they have similarly bizarre uses?"

He's genuinely curious, partly to get a better idea of Zelgadis's abilities, and partly because maybe someone else thought of a use for crafting that he, his parents, or his teachers hadn't.

"It's hard to see that kind of thing when it's the only magic you know," Zelgadis noted.

Septimus laughs. "I'll grant you that. I suppose there are applications of furycrafting which might seem unintuitive to non-Alerans."

He suspects the various emotional uses of furycrafting are off the beaten path, by most standards. "I guess the place to start would be asking what the different elements can do." Because the military commander is subconsciously working on things.

"Right. There are five elements to Shamanism, then there's white and black magic and holy magic. I don't know any holy magic, and it and black magic won't work here on the turtle, since it draws power from beings that don't exist in this world." Though Malicant was similar enough to some of the most powerful mazoku that Zel had to wonder if one could draw the power for black magic off of it. Which was probably a terrible idea, and not very useful. Maybe Lina could build a spell and use it successfully, but it wasn't Zel's area.

"I'm more of an expert in spells used in combat, rather than the ones that take longer to cast. A friend of mine uses magic to make talismans in her down-time for example, and a lot of guild sorcerers prefer the fiddly parts of magic."

Zelgadis started ticking off elements on his fingers.

"Shamanism has five elements: earth, air, fire, water and astral or spirit. Most fire spells call fire in some way. Only the form differs. There's one that redirects fire, but that's the same kind of principle -- using magic to shape fire."

The phrase 'the fiddly parts of magic' makes Septimus smile ruefully. Truthfully, he has a fascination with the 'fiddly parts' of furycrafting, though he rarely works with them, because they tend to be a mark of skill and-- well, besides getting bored and needing more interesting furycrafting tasks, he's the Princeps. Or he was. Being the best was nearly as much a duty as a point of pride.

(And he had friendly competition with his friends and his parents on it.)

The smile turns into a genuine laugh. "Fire does seem to be fairly straightforward most of the time," he agrees. "How do the forms differ? Can fire spells be used to remove heat instead?"

"I haven't heard of a spell like that," Zelgadis said. "Most sorcerers use wind and ice to cool things."

"Ice is treated as part of water, then, rather than connected to fire by absence of heat?"

It's certainly one way to do it, and the logic is obvious; in some part of his mind Septimus is turning this over in his mind, wondering what the possibilities are.

"Right. Water is ice, liquid water, mist... it also covers some things like breathing in water. I've even heard of people adapting water shamanism to summon water creatures, if there's an ocean nearby," Zelgadis commented. "Though I've also seen white magic used to summon water creatures."

The breathing-in-water part is particularly intriguing. Septimus is very certain that isn't a trick of watercrafting--if it were, he'd know--but a part of him is now wondering if a combination of windcrafting and watercrafting could do it. It's an intriguing thought, at least.

"Is there a difference between using water versus white magic to summon the creatures?"

"Well, the white magic spell just made fish bite the fishing hook. I've not seen of the exact water shamanism spells, but reports had the creatures actually jumping out of the water. But that's only observation, not theory."

Ah, that clarifies what he means by 'summoning water creatures' rather more, and Septimus is overall relieved that Zelgadis did not refer to sharks or worse, leviathans. As much as it was his first interpretation, it was with no little alarm, because deliberately calling sharks or leviathans? No one in their right mind would do that.

"Interesting. But breathing under water--wind plays no part in that?" If Zelgadis knows how it works, maybe he can duplicate it?

"No, but you can use air shamanism to travel under water in a bubble of air," Zelgadis explained. "Which is useful since your clothing stays dry. And I'm not much of a swimmer, so being able to breathe is only part of my problem."

It wasn't that Zelgadis couldn't swim. It was more that he couldn't swim hard enough to counter that he was denser than water.

That was more or less what Septimus had been considering as a possibility, and he nods a little at the confirmation. It's definitely an interesting concept, and he might well have to test it out at some point.

"What else can air shamanism do?" This is lovely and informative.

"Gusts of wind, flight, barriers against other spells and arrows," Zelgadis ticked things off. "Creating lightning as well."

Now that sounds more like it, and Septimus grins properly. "Can you fly?" Because while this is definitely not the time, they may have to compare methods some time.

"Which just leaves earth, out of the four that I recognize."

"Yeah. Top-speed flight means I can't cast any other spells, but I can slow down and still use some of my other spells." Reywing was a tricky spell, since it combined both the lift and the wind barrier, and Zel couldn't concentrate on sustaining it and casting a new spell. "I've practiced a bit with Temeraire and some of the other fliers here."

"Earth... includes earth manipulation, but also spells based on vibrations in solid objects. It's also used to make golems."

Septimus has most definitely added Zelgadis to is mental list of 'people who need to practice with him personally,' along with the Avatars. People who can plausibly keep up with him are few and far between.

"Golems? What kinds of spells based on vibrations?"
