Situation: Two French War Girls meet up again in the aftermath of recent developments

[She wasn't sleeping very well these days.]

[Some nights, Midii would lay awake. Others, she would pass out from sheer exhaustion and the nightmares would take over. Flashbacks of her old life. The one she had long thought to have left behind. The Captain. The soldiers. Nanashii. Very rarely, she would dream of her brothers. Those were the worst; her face would be wet from tears upon awakening.]

[How many days had passed since the mass bombing? And now the city was under attack. She could feel the unseen presence in the air. A looming shadow threatening their once near-utopian way of life. Was this what her destiny was meant to be? Glimmers of happiness, only for them to go up in smoke.]

[The only comfort was that she could still move freely without the threat of being shot. That only a select few on the Turtle new of the sins of her past, and none of them would ever hold it against her. That she could still walk the marketplace and purchase enough food, even with rationing, to fill her up at least twice a day.]

[Which was what Midii was doing now. Keeping her head low, tendrils of blonde locks hiding her shadowed eyes from view, she weaved through the crowds in search of her day's haul. There was the bakery. The fruit stand. The dairy shop. And, lastly, the bookstore--maybe she would get lucky and there would be another English volume at her current reading level. It would be well worth the price, to give her something to do on those nights when sleep was a lost cause.]

No, I am not! Do not say that. If I do not touch it, someone else has it.

[unetrustworthy]

I don't mean the food, Eponine.

I meant your second chance.

[jondrette]

Marius is gone, Midii. I will have no other chance.

[unetrustworthy]

Yes, you will. You do.

I wasn't loved either, remember? Twice, I wasn't loved. Nanashii rejected me...Damian doesn't return my feelings... [So she still believed] Should I stop eating and give up my life too?

[jondrette]

Oh- no- no! P'tite! You must not. You are young, you are beautiful. I am neither of those things. Midii, do not say such things. I will not let you speak of giving up your life.

[unetrustworthy]

[Fortunately, she had few intentions of actually doing so just yet]

And I won't let you speak of them either, Eponine.

You're beautiful too. I don't want to see you waste away. Please.

[jondrette]

I have been eating, Midii.

[unetrustworthy]

Not enough.

[jondrette]

More than in Paris.

[unetrustworthy]

You and I both know that doesn't mean much.

[jondrette]

I know.

But I eat more now than I did last month.

[unetrustworthy]

Will you keep eating more?

[jondrette]

Of course.

[unetrustworthy]

And promise me that you will take better care of yourself?

[Which means cut back on the alcohol diet]

[jondrette]

[Eponine reaches out a hand to gently touch Midii's cheek.]

I promise.

[unetrustworthy]

Good.

[She smiled up warmly at Eponine--the kind of smile reserved only for those she loved like family--before looking back down to take another bite. As she chewed, her eyes wandered over the area they were sitting in. It was so quiet. But peaceful.]

You'd never know we were attacked recently.

[jondrette]

It is strange, is it not? [she nibbles at her own bread.] You can see the destruction. Yet... It is different.

[unetrustworthy]

Maybe because we went so long here without an attack happening?

[jondrette]

Yes. Yes, that does seem correct.

[unetrustworthy]

Do you think it'll happen again?

[jondrette]

[eponine is silent for a moment, considering. Then:]

Yes. It shall. Until they have gotten what they want. Only then will it stop.

[unetrustworthy]

What do they want?

I've seen the palace. Something's happening in there already. I just know it.

[jondrette]

I do not know. Not really.

[unetrustworthy]

Then we don't know for sure they haven't already gotten it?

[Considering it had been some time since the attacks, which had gone off all at once. And even though tensions were high in the streets...they were still able to walk around freely.]

I haven't seen any more military presence than before. The local people...they're scared, but they're not really fighting back.

[jondrette]

Perhaps they have given up. But we will not.

We must remain safe. You must remain safe.
