Characters: Gene Khan, Captain Amelia
Date: Early May, prior to the siege
Location: A park in the Water District
Situation: Heigh ho, heigh ho, a-fencing we willgo attempt and then get immediately sidetracked talking about SPACE!

Gene had decided that he needed to practice more with the sword Eshai had given him for Christmas. He was no stranger to armed combat; one of the advantages of growing up in such an unorthodox manner was that he had been trained in wushu for twelve years, and some of that training included swordplay.
The sword he'd been given was an elegant blade similar to a jian, not some butcher's sabre but a civilized weapon, and so he had to adjust his style to match. While he preferred the dao for its power, he knew how to use this sort of weapon as well, and he grudgingly had to concede that it was better for him. The raw power of a more brutish weapon appealed to him, but what need did he have of mere weaponry for power when nine of the greatest weapons in the world frequently rode on his hands?
Besides, he thought, he could murder well enough with the armor, as the incident with Bakura had proven. It had lacked finesse. He could use a bit more of that.
Which is how he finds himself practicing the drills he'd learned while he was younger, warming up. All of the kedan are opting to keep well clear of the crazy Foreigner with the bladed weapon, which he thinks is funny; it's not like he's flailing around uncontrollably, here.

But the advent of Malicant's takeover was a serious development, and the strongest reminder yet that they, the Foreigners, were indeed at war. Pity the technology of Keeliai wasn't developed enough to provide suitable firearms, but Academy teachings hadn't left her stranded for close combat. When she was able to move about properly for extended amounts of time, the captain had gone forthwith to obtain some means of defense.
The saber she had finally managed to obtain, while not quite the sort of blade she was used to, would serve its purpose well enough. While she hadn't had much need for the art, Amelia had been taught saber play, and with her injuries almost completely healed now (aside from a slight persistent ache in her elbow), she has decided it is time to exercise her knowledge of swordplay.
She's not the only one to have the idea, Amelia sees, as she enters the park. Gene Khan is here too, performing drills. It's not entirely surprising, really, as she had seen him wielding a sword before. For a moment, she stands back, eyes following his drills. They aren't familiar to her, and she doubts her own knowledge would fit the style.
The moment of watching passed, and Amelia moves an arm's reach away from what seems to be the greatest distance Gene can manage with his weapon. "Seeing as you've already managed to clear out any kedan from quite a large radius, you won't mind a companion to practice alongside, would you now, Mr. Khan?"

"Captain," he says with a grin as he finishes up the form, closing with a salute-like move and then putting his hands behind his back, bringing the sword around in his hand to nearly rest the flat of his blade against his shoulder. Then he drops out of the pose, at-ease. "Wouldn't mind it a bit. Gets a little boring, practicing by yourself. Sure you're up to it?" She had been injured in the blasts, he knew that much. He'd hurt himself too, but he'd already largely recovered from the attacks.

Amelia takes up her own stance, pleased to see that, though out of practice, her body still remembers the basics. "Well then, shall we?" Without waiting for a response from Gene, she begins her own set of motions. A basic drill to ease herself back into the movements she had been taught, as well as to work out the lingering aches from her injuries.

He doesn't jump right in, just watches her do her own drill for a little while. Her weapon is more Western, if he was correct, a heavier saber than the sword in his hand. The drill itself is reminiscent in some basic ways of his own training with the dao, befitting the heavier blade.

Again a moment of wishfulness, that the technology of Keeliai was more advanced, then Amelia brushes the thoughts away. No use dwelling on what cannot be changed. "I don't think I've ever seen a blade in the style that you have, nor do I recognize your form. Another difference between our home universes, perhaps?"

When talk turns to his sword, though, he looks interested. "It's one of the interesting things about this place; a lot of the style is similar to the environment in which I was raised." Sometimes, enough to make him homesick. "This sword was a gift from Eshai. It's very similar to the type of sword called a jian that I learned how to use."

At his admission that Keeliai resembles his own home, she perks up in interest. "Really now? It seems there are quite a number of similarities between worlds. I take it the giant turtle is not one of those similarities, though." That was something she can't imagine repeating itself; it's simply too absurd, and she wouldn't have believed it had she not been brought here.
"Might I have a look at it?" She gestures at the sword Gene is holding.
no subject
"It's somewhat similar. The aesthetic, largely, not the population. And only to a degree." Okay, so he'd grown up on a frickin' Soul Calibur stage. That didn't mean it was common. "But no. The turtles back home don't get that large."
When she gestures to his sword, he hands it over. "Sure."
turns out we messed up and the saber is lighter. whoops
The captain hands the jian back, then settles back into stance. She still hasn't fully gotten back into the swing of the blade, so to speak, and begins another round of drills.

"How much control would you say you have over that sword?"

She thought she had mentioned her home universe upon arriving here months ago, but Gene had not asked extensively about it during their first conversation. "I hail from the Terran Empire, myself."
there are more things in heaven and earth, gene, than are dreamt of in your philosophy
Something seems a little off about those two statements juxtaposed like that. Amelia talking about firearms like they're a relatively recent development...and a Terran Empire. And she doesn't look remotely like she belongs on Earth. "Terran as in...Earth?" he asks, sounding surprised. "So what, does the empire cover the whole planet?"
in which neither of them have worlds that remotely match
psyduck.jpg
"A spacefaring civilization with swordfighting and a navy," he says, half to himself. Yup. Dune was right, Gene. "So you come from another planet? What's it like?"
psyduck.jpg
"That would depend entirely on which planet you are coming from. However, the empire tends to be fairly homogenous. It's not really all that different from Keeliai, actually. A different overall aesthetic, yes, but otherwise close enough. The kedan and their wide range of shapes add to the similarities."

They're talking about the same thing, right? "So, the aesthetic of Keeliai's like what I know, and the population's like what you know. Huh." It is interesting. Maybe their universes aren't all so different...? Nah. Keeliai's still pretty weird.
it's only going to get worse from here on out
There is definitely some sort of disconnect occurring here. "Visually, yes. But in the case of the kedan it's merely one people that appear in great variety. The Terran Empire has a citizenry of many species under its flag."
are we sure they're speaking the same language
Ooh, he's curious. "What kinds of species?"
there is some serious disconnect here
His curiosity is evident to her. "Many kinds. Zirrelians, Arcturians, Benbonians, the Macriki... humans too. The queen herself is human. There are more than fifty different races that live as Terran citizens."
the aetherium. the final frontier. these are the voyages of the RLS Legacy.
Something's really bugging him about that.
"So it's called the navy. Why isn't it called something like..." What did those guys call it? "...Starfleet?"
except not really we've mapped a lot of it
Surprisingly, the name rings a bell to her. Amelia muses on it a moment before recalling where she had heard it before. Ah, yes. Back when she first arrived, one Jim Kirk had introduced himself as being an officer from such an organization. "I do not come from the same world as that Captain Kirk fellow, if you are wondering."
THESE ARE THE VOYAGES.......
it's 2 am i do not need to be reminded of that series because i will go watch it again
jesus christ I didn't mean THOSE
Even if he can manipulate that speed limit himself, if he really tries. c be damned!oh. well then.
indeed.
Re: indeed.
annddd we're hitting on it now.
prepare yourself gene.
[psyduck intensifies]
"...it looks just like an old sailing ship," Gene manages after a moment. "Doesn't that cause problems getting out of the atmosphere? Do the masts retract?"
None of this makes any sense whatsoever.
Re: [psyduck intensifies]
Clearly a bit ruffled about the phrase - old sailing ship! - Amelia proceeds to answer Gene's other questions. "No, the masts do not retract at all, and it is difficult for ships to exit planetary atmospheres. Normally they remain outside it, docking at the nearest spaceport instead."
lmao amelia, slow your roll
He sketches out a reasonable approximation of the space shuttle in the dirt near Amelia's rendering of the
fucking boatship. "This is a space shuttle. It's designed similarly to an airplane, so it can leave the planet on booster rockets and come back to land multiple times. Mostly the old spacecrafts were one-offs." He tries to remember what the Apollo 11 space capsule looked like, and sketches it as well. "This was the part of the rocket from the moon landing that came back to Earth with the astronauts inside. It landed in the ocean, I think."what is airplane though
She glances over his sketches, taking in the unfamiliar designs. "I'm afraid I don't know what an airplane is, but I assume it is something that is capable of flight of some sort. A one-off spacecraft seems quite wasteful, though."
Her focus is on the shuttle drawing. "Where does it get the energy needed for its thrusters?"
plane and plane, what is plane?
So you have spacecraft and an interstellar empire, but no airplanes? Amelia. What fool designed your world backwards? He does his best to hide his bafflement and says, "Yes, it's a..." He sketches an airplane out next to the space shuttle, a simple top-down view. "It's what most people use to travel great distances now." He's plenty familiar with airplanes, having blown one up in flight and all. Amelia doesn't need to know that. "Ships - sailing ships, on the water - are now mostly used for military purposes, pleasure cruises, or commercial freight. Flying is a lot faster than sailing."
He looks at the shuttle. "There are two large rocket boosters that get it up off the ground in the first place, and then come off the shuttle after liftoff - those are reused, I think. The fuel for the orbiter goes into the engines. I'm not really sure how it works. Ask Stark." Then his throat inexplicably tightens when he remembers Stark's not here, none of them are here. Not like that bothers him.
