Situation: A very late "Memorial Day" barbecue, bring your own beef!
Warnings/Rating: N/A. C'mon, it's a barbecue.

[There's two grills, one for meat, one for veggies. (We don't want our vegetarians getting cross-contamination, now do we?) They're pretty basic, just some wood-burning open barrels with grills over top. Feel free to come on by, bring some food to share around, and hang out with your friends. Or glare across the way at your enemies! We're all good here.]

Yeah, well, when it's nice like this, why not cook outside, you know? We had barbecues all the time back home.

[Hands his bag of grill-friendly veggies (or whatever the Keeliai equivalent was called) off to whoever's cooking at the time.]

I do not know. Perhaps because I have spent so long camping.

It's sort of like camping, but with a house nearby instead of a tent.

Wait, Baronesses camp? Don't you like, have a portable house or something? [Mark reads a lot of fantasy...]

I had a horse, and a lackey with a mule. We stayed in inns when they permitted, but there are wide parts of the Empire that lack even villages.

I had not considered a 'portable house'. We normally managed with wards.

[Now she is considering it.]

And why were you camping in the first place, if I can ask?

Keep watch and alert the sleepers if something large crossed them. It was possible something that is not an enemy would cross them, so I didn't place any stronger effects on them.

And, I often travelled. I was a Lavode, so had cause to visit many places.

[ And being in charge of a territory bored Tazendra to tears... or to magical experiments that turned into expensive repair bills. ]

That sounds handy. Especially the part that weeds out like... deer or something and sticks to seemingly dangerous things.

Is a Lavode like a diplomat?

Not hardly. They were a group of sorcerers responsible for the security of the Empire against... well, many problems. Those which could not be solved by Her Majesty's guards or her sorcerers.

[Tazendra waved her hand vaguely to indicate such problems.]

Only I and our leader remain. Now she is the only one on world, but no doubt she will find others to train. Or they will find her.

I didn't know baronesses fought people. I just... sort of thought they sat around in big houses and ate crumpets all day. I don't even know what crumpets are.

From the way it's been described to me, when we go back, we'll go back exactly where they took us, so your leader shouldn't be alone while you're here.

Well, if I had remained at home, I would be tasked to administer the barony, or find a competent steward. As I have such people, it permits me to travel. It would have been a disgrace to not fulfill my duties as lord, even if I had no inclination to it.

But, I expect if I return, it will be to the Paths of the Dead.
