[EVENT] A NEW WORLD ORDER

Situation: The Foreigners have awakened.

They've been in the Dreaming for so long that when they wake up their bodies feel more like automatons, alien and ill-fitting. They haven’t atrophied, thanks to Milyn, but they’re stiff and a little bedsore, and the solidity of the Life Plane is jarring. Here, the surroundings don’t move on a whim. Here the world is more stable, almost harsh and unyielding in spite of the homey surrounds.

It’s been a year, says the clock on the mantle and on the second floor. Says Milyn, too, when she’s able to stop hugging them long enough to speak.

Nothing much has changed in the Midnight Hotel. There are dishes out of place, objects belonging to either Milyn or Eva in evidence, the diorama exactly where it had been but now brightly-painted thanks to Milyn's boredom. Milyn and Eva took a room each, in the time the Foreigners were sleeping, though neither used them much.

Eva’s upstairs, Milyn will tell anyone who asks. In her room.

Eva hasn't left that room in three days. She hasn't spoken in three days, either, or walked, or moved, or breathed. Her effects are neatly arranged around her bed, and the sheet has been pulled up. There is heavy incense in the room and Milyn has managed to preserve the body enough to remove the risk of too much mess (and other things). In a way, that makes it worse: as though Eva is sleeping. It’s difficult to tell whether Milyn is in denial or whether spending three days with no one to talk to other than sleeping Foreigners and a corpse has had its influence.

"I'd settle for a hot shower," She said, although a long bath did sound nice. "I wonder how much has changed in the time we've been gone..."

"A lot can change in a year," Zelgadis said. "Especially given the country went through two emperors in quick order and the cultists were running the streets when we left."

She winced, they had left the Kedan in the lurch when it came to dealing with the cultists. "True, we did leave things in a bit of a mess."

"Not much we could do; no one knew we'd be gone this long and not left at home," Zelgadis said.

"Best to get moving then," She sighed, "There will be a lot of work to do."

[gathersnomoss]

"Yeah. I wonder if we're still as closely tied to the Turtle as we were," Zelgadis said.

"Well, according to Malicant, the great turtle was never connected to us in the first place," Valdis replied, one eyebrow raised.

[gathersnomoss]

"Magic was weakened or nonexistent on the mainland early on; it did diminish as things got bad," Zelgadis said. "If not the turtle itself, then Malicant's ability to mediate the turtle's power. Or else he steered us to unusual places to trick us into staying in his sight at first. Or it was something the old Emperor did when summoning us for the same reason."

"I think that there are some questions that will never be answered." Valdis didn't know whether or not she needed to remind him that she hadn't been on the turtle as long as most of the others and had no memories of the mainland or the emperor before Evandau.

Zelgadis nodded. "The old Emperor was pretty paranoid; perhaps justifiably so, even if she never figured out where Malicant was holing up. I don't think she told Evandu everything she was up to, unless it concerned him."

She clearly hadn't been expecting to die at the hands of one of the Foreigners she had summoned. Zelgadis hadn't liked her, but he could respect her.

"Their lack of communication is what ultimately led to their downfall." She observed, recalling Evandau making similar mistakes. Perhaps if they hadn't spent so much time keeping the foreigners in the dark, then they would still be alive.

Zelgadis nodded. "We weren't terribly inclined to work with her until she explained a few things," he said.

"Let us hope that a competent person now holds power." If anyone at all, "And that we aren't completely turned away by the Kedan."

[gathersnomoss]

"Right. We don't exactly have much in the way of resources, though I did pack a bag."

Zelgadis hadn't been sure he would or wouldn't be going home, so he had most of his important things with him. He's probably been using them as a pillow for the last year.

"I really didn't have anything of value, so starting over isn't exactly a problem."

There would be problems though, of that she was certain.

"Depends on what we have to work with. We don't exactly have an Emperor giving us start up funds, though I have my savings with me."

[redlightgreenlight]

"We can only rely on ourselves...and each other." She replied, "We can't be fractured like we were before."

[gathersnomoss]

"Hopefully, everyone will figure that out."

[redlightgreenlight]

"I know I have," She replied simply.

[gathersnomoss]

"Same here," Zelgadis said. "This was one of those 'Important Life Lessons'"

[redlightgreenlight]

"One that I wish we didn't have to learn through such terrible circumstances."

[gathersnomoss]

Zelgadis nodded. "Or with so much loss."

[redlightgreenlight]

"That too..." She said quietly

[gathersnomoss]

Zelgadis wasn't sure what to say to that. "Well, I won't keep you from that shower."

"Yeah..."She didn't know how to respond either, so she simply stood up, nodded to Zelgadis and headed for the showers.
