[EVENT] Bonfire Night

Characters: ALL!
Date: February 21st
Location: Various.
Situation: It’s cold. Time to cuddle up and make bonfires for the warmth.
Warnings/Rating: Add warnings as needed.

As night falls the city’s lights take something of a unique turn. Instead of being lit by millions of paper lanterns, Keeliai is tonight lit by the flames and warmth of dozens if not hundreds of fires. Some of them are small, not much more than warming hearths in a barrel on a street, but others encompass squares and boulevards.

The fire lighting procession winds through the city’s streets, beginning at the first bonfire in Fire Sector. By the time full night has arrived, that procession is a snake illuminated by dozens of torches, parting from the main parade to light smaller fires in smaller streets. It ends, finally, in Central, in the Courtyard of Public Opinion, whose bonfire is second only to the initiating one in Fire Sector.

In some areas an exchange of goods arises, mostly in terms of woollens and other warm clothes and blankets. Though food is considered a public resource on this occasion, bartering small knickknacks, songs, stories and even other woollen items is not uncommon an exchange.

Meals are shared among kedan and Foreigners, commoners and emissaries--primarily stews, soups and other foods easily baked in the coals of the fires. Everyone brings food, and what isn’t contributed to the pot is nevertheless shared around after preparation. Although some bonfires are markedly wealthier than others, food and shelter is spread around to make sure everyone is safe and warm. No one goes cold and alone on this night.

THAT was actually somewhat of a relief for Arno. After Tony's reaction, which he suspected wasn't something that went entirely unshared by most people, it had been difficult to work out who to mention his career goals to.

"It must depend, yes. So far, I wouldn't say I've seen a leader who I'd join up for, but the other men are...I would say that's fair enough. The brotherhood I'm part of speaks to the ideal, at least."

"Those who led my unit were good men," Anton agreed, "but the war in which I fought was for greater matters than mere land or philosophy. Those we fought sought to subjugate the world. Even had our leaders been incompetent, I would have fought."

And the incompetents hadn't lasted long, either. Unfortunately not many of the competent ones did either; Skulduggery was fortunate in that regard ... from one perspective.

"You don't say." Arno's eyes lit, not with excitement, by any means, but with a glint of familiarity. The exact situation was different, of course, but, when it came to the details that were shared, well.

"That is...it is not the reasons that I joined my order, but it is the reason that I stayed, when I came to understand it all. Well, all that I was allowed to understand. That, I can completely understand."

Arno wasn't completely sure how he felt about the council these days. They had had points, the last time he'd seen them, but they did seem a bit...narrow-minded somehow.

"The threat of world subjugation is entirely too familiar, isn't it? A pity one world's solution for that, cannot carry through."

"Does it not?" Anton returned, to the click of his needles. "The solution is always, of course, to stand up and say no. To fight. It isn't a particularly easy one, though it is rather simple. Any details are merely dressing, but always, the solution against tyranny is to object."

Very far from easy, but simple, yes. There were many times Anton felt that people equated the two, and that equating the two was the cause behind the willing blindness of those who pretended everything was fine. Few things that were simple were also easy, but by expecting it, people set themselves up to dismiss it.

"Oh, the solution exists." Arno answered, nodding as Anton spoke. "But whether or not it carries through, or enough people careTHAT is where the trouble falls into place. And then, too..."

His frown deepens a little now, considering what he has learned about just who those pushing for revolution, beyond the peasants, are.

"When the proposed solution to ending tyranny is to establish another tyranny, right under the noses of those who would give their support, it becomes harder too. Not impossible, and certainly, the right thing, but finding enough who care..." He shook his head, sighing a little. "Well, one surely has their work cut out for them in such a circumstance, I would say."

"That happens all too frequently also, I am afraid," Anton agreed. "It is easy to presume to speak for others; even governments who mean well do so. That is why I built the Hotel--the governments created after the war are perhaps better than the ones before, but even then they began by compromising with evil. I could not trust that they would speak for those who had no voice."

The Hotel didn't precisely take that role, but it was a place where those with no voice could go and not be judged. The only drawback was that it did mean Anton had to treat with his enemies as he did his friends, but that was a matter of self-respect more than it was politics.

"It's the crux of the matter, isn't it? How to promote something that the people want, without letting it get too far back into the other direction." Arno shook his head a little.

"That WAS a good thought, yes." He added, nodding at the mention of the hotel. "Neutral ground, and such things as that, and a place you can be free to say whatever you will, with no fear you'll get a blade in your back for the trouble I think it's serving as a few things in that vein quite nicely."

gistful: (why give in?)

[personal profile] gistful 2015-04-10 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
"Thank you. I agree." There had been those who didn't like the Hotel, if only because it removed power from governments. There were always those who disliked having their power removed, and usually they were among the most powerful to begin with. "Have you met Enjolras?" Anton asked. "I can't say he has similar ideas to yours, as I've spoken to him only a handful of times--but he has had a similar discourse, regarding the people."
stubbornlittleshit: (charming grin)

[personal profile] stubbornlittleshit 2015-04-12 06:58 am (UTC)(link)
"Enjolras..." He mused a moment, trying to place it. The name was fairly obviously some degree of French, but a bit more Provencial than he was usually used to hearing. Which got him thinking about anyone explicitly french he'd crossed paths with lately, or even...

Suddenly Arno was snorting as a certain picture came to mind.

"Oh. Ohhhh. Blond and unusually somber, yes?" He answered, trying to look very serious and failing at it rather badly. "Well we haven't met officially, exactly but if it's the man I'm thinking of, we've traded snowballs."
gistful: (no longer)

[personal profile] gistful 2015-04-16 06:10 am (UTC)(link)
"Ah, yes, the snowball fight," said Anton with amusement. "Yes, that sounds like him. The discussion we had was somewhat in dire straits, but it wasn't dissimilar." Talking the man down from being controlled by Malicant by discussing political and moral theory had been interesting, if nothing else.
stubbornlittleshit: (charming grin)

[personal profile] stubbornlittleshit 2015-04-19 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
"Interesting. Someone to look for." Arno makes a mental note of that for now. He idly wonders for a moment, if their worlds are at all close to the same, but it seems as though he's mostly the only one of his kind here. It's hard to tell if that is good or not, considering.
gistful: (why give in?)

[personal profile] gistful 2015-04-20 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
"Indeed." Anton inclined his head. "Thank you for the conversation. I do not believe I've heard your name?"
stubbornlittleshit: (Default)

[personal profile] stubbornlittleshit 2015-05-04 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
"Ah, yes, names." Arno smirks, extending a hand. "Arno Dorian."
gistful: (it's easy)

[personal profile] gistful 2015-05-10 11:48 am (UTC)(link)
"Anton Shudder." It was difficult to bow from the seat, so Anton took the hand and shook it; his hand was callused like a workman's, his grip firm but not overbearing. "Good evening to you, Master Dorian."
stubbornlittleshit: (Default)

[personal profile] stubbornlittleshit 2015-05-10 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)

"And you, Monsieur Shudder." The grip felt like Bellec's, he thought. Straightforward, for the most part, and like he'd tell the truth no matter what the circumstances. "I hope whatever comes here finds you well, or at least, well enough."

gistful: (so let this life begin)

[personal profile] gistful 2015-05-11 10:13 am (UTC)(link)
"And you," Anton echoed, and returned to his knitting.
