[EVENT] Bonfire Night

Characters: ALL!
Date: February 21st
Location: Various.
Situation: It’s cold. Time to cuddle up and make bonfires for the warmth.
Warnings/Rating: Add warnings as needed.

As night falls the city’s lights take something of a unique turn. Instead of being lit by millions of paper lanterns, Keeliai is tonight lit by the flames and warmth of dozens if not hundreds of fires. Some of them are small, not much more than warming hearths in a barrel on a street, but others encompass squares and boulevards.

The fire lighting procession winds through the city’s streets, beginning at the first bonfire in Fire Sector. By the time full night has arrived, that procession is a snake illuminated by dozens of torches, parting from the main parade to light smaller fires in smaller streets. It ends, finally, in Central, in the Courtyard of Public Opinion, whose bonfire is second only to the initiating one in Fire Sector.

In some areas an exchange of goods arises, mostly in terms of woollens and other warm clothes and blankets. Though food is considered a public resource on this occasion, bartering small knickknacks, songs, stories and even other woollen items is not uncommon an exchange.

Meals are shared among kedan and Foreigners, commoners and emissaries--primarily stews, soups and other foods easily baked in the coals of the fires. Everyone brings food, and what isn’t contributed to the pot is nevertheless shared around after preparation. Although some bonfires are markedly wealthier than others, food and shelter is spread around to make sure everyone is safe and warm. No one goes cold and alone on this night.

"Ireland," China confirms, still definitely amused by his reaction. "A different one than yours, I'm sure, but Ireland nevertheless. I've done my share of traveling, of course, but it's home, after a fashion." A little less so than it was, perhaps, but even so, if she does flee the country again it'll only be temporary.

'San Fransokyo', however, gives her all kinds of pause, and she gives him a moderately bemused look in return. "San Fransokyo," she repeats, to be sure she has not, in fact, misheard him. "Would that be any relation to San Francisco?"

Is it his turn to be amused? "That's what they used to call it...over a hundred years ago. With the population coming together after the earthquake..." He shrugs a bit lightly, though something's already come to mind. "One of those differences, perhaps?"

If so...interesting. He wonders what sort of different path the city might have looked, if the immigrants hadn't taken it upon themselves to rebuild it properly prepared for such a catastrophe.

"Interesting," China says, contemplative and not at all sarcastic about her interest. The fact such a difference is even possible intrigues her, and the things that might have been caused by that divergence... oh, she's curious. "It must be 'one of those differences,' as you say. No such enthusiastic collaboration happened in my world, and the city retains its old name. If I doubted at all we were not from the same Earth... But you are from roughly the same time frame?"

To that, he nods. "Twenty-thirty-four, specifically. I don't see how it's not possible- dimensional physics was never my forte, but I know there's a few theories that support it. I imagine," he adds with a wry look, "that if the right people back home knew about this, and knew it was real..."

Rescue? No, that seems to be the wrong word.

"...they could connect," he settles for saying, "with us, here. Given enough time, and assuming they weren't rushed through it."

Given enough time, people can accomplish anything. For better or worse...

Within twenty-five years is close enough, as far as China's concerned. That's not so long. "Perhaps," China allows, thinking. "The situation is not without precedent. There are some mages who are capable of dimensional shunting in my own world, as well. Still... I'm not convinced even they might find this place. There are, in theory, infinite worlds to choose from."

She has a few more reasons than she's voicing. She's not as invested in metaphysical theory as some people, but this matter seems more complex than just a matter of changing location.
