Sky Sector Catch-All: May

Situation: Moving in, getting settled...housewarming parties?
Warnings/Rating: None anticipated. Please don't blow the new houses up. We just built them!

The Palace of Landed Sky has been largely demolished, and a good section of the land has been repurposed as Foreigner housing, should they choose to move into the new dwellings. But there's not just housing - there are shops and artisans and a space that may become part of the university. The new sector of the city is abuzz with possibilities.

[He sighs a little as he removes the goggles completely, maneuvering them around the brim of his hat with practiced ease. Geez, nerd, you could take the dumb hat off while you're working, but nooo...]

Thank you. [He sets his equipment on a table off to one side (the better to keep Hiro from suddenly running into it somehow) and offers Callaghan a smile. His skills haven't faded, no, nor his dedication to his work, but there's something different about that smile. Something not insincere, but certainly lacking in some of the enthusiasm that would normally come with a compliment from his professor.]

I'm glad to see it too, to be honest. I was a little worried I'd lose my touch after a month of cleaning bathrooms.

[No he wasn't, but let's keep things light, yes no?]

[after talking with Hiro, he thinks he might have an idea for that odd smile...Robert tilts his head for a moment, then offers a thin one of his own, deciding to start with something else that's been bothering him-]

I'm glad we're going to be putting those skills to better use, then. You were wasted there. Are you looking forwards to this new project?

[the whole 'business', that is. though Callaghan has a few other projects he could be referring to, really.]

There are worse ways to pay for room and board, all things considered. [And having the continued desk work is nice, too. Even if it's just part-time, it's reassuring to know that at least one member of the house will have a ~~legit~~ dependable income until their little business is up and running fully.]

I can't say this is what I imagined we'd be doing when I first arrived, but... [He shrugs a little, still smiling.] We'll be doing good work. Maybe we can even help to up the tech level here.

Well, now that I have a bit of help- once we get going, we'll be able to do that and more. As well as be able to focus on that, instead of splitting our attentions. [he means that desk work, Tadashi. the sooner you move on from it, the better.

all that said, though, he's now starting to clean up. they've got the tools to put away, but a few other things, too]

Any other hopes while you're here?

[He manages a sheepish sort of look before moving to do his own share of the cleaning up. Callaghan's made it very clear how he feels about the desk job and, while Tadashi would certainly rather do the work he's already dedicated most of his short life to (especially if he's going to work with his professor), he has a little brother to take care of. He wants to be sure of things before he lets go of that little bit of stability.]

Well, it's on a similar vein, but I'm looking forward to the school proposal you were talking about. We could fix every broken machine in this place, and it wouldn't have as much impact as teaching the kedan to be able to do it themselves.

Mmm. I think my favorite part of that is that independence, and then being less reliant on those 'families' to get the job done. [he...doesn't have anything against them, per se, but he does think that the more everyone can pull their own weight...

well.]

Anything for yourself, though? Or are you and Hiro working on anything...?

[Tadashi really hasn't had all that much exposure to the different families. Just enough to know that he doesn't really want to get on anyone's bad side... which he's fairly good at, being who he is.

He's not looking at Robert when he answers, instead focused on the stowing the welding supplies safely away, but he shrugs anyway.]

Ah... nothing in particular, no. I think Hiro's got some projects he's been working on, though.

[Not that he knows what those projects are. The Hamadas haven't really been communicating well recently.]

[Tadashi may not be looking at Robert, but Robert's sure looking at him. which approach to take...]

I'd have thought it a little more difficult to lose track of him, here. Didn't you two work on projects together, back in San Fransokyo?

It's just as easy, actually. [He laughs a little, but the sound dies quickly.]

We did. More so before I started school, but whenever there was time...

So what's changed? [his tone remains light, but Tadashi can probably catch the hint of I-know-something-is-going-on in it.]

[Noooo, he doesn't want to talk about this. He could try to deflect, turn the conversation in a different direction, but that tone doesn't leave much wiggle room... and really, he probably should talk to someone. That is, if he can figure out how to even do it. Even when Hiro confronted him directly, he still couldn't manage to put his feelings into words.

He's stalled partway through his cleaning, shoulders tightening a bit as he stares down at the tool in his hands.]

... Hiro told me about the fire.

...did he.

[it's telling in itself that Callaghan seems only so surprised- both at the admission, and mention of the fire itself. he leans back, regarding Tadashi seriously as he mulls all of it over]

...it's a bit to take in, isn't it?

[Tadashi nods. Of course Callaghan's not that surprised. Not when he already knew about the fire. Part of Tadashi wants to be mad angry about the information that was withheld from him, but he can't manage it with Callaghan any more than he could with Hiro. Who would want to break that news to someone obviously better off not knowing anyway? And Callaghan... he's been living with that knowledge this entire time. Knowing about the fire and Tadashi and even his own end in the flames.

Tadashi never would've guessed...]

... "A bit" might be understating it.

Well.

[...well what? what do you say to someone you thought dead, who's only now learned about such? whom you were hoping to let believe all was well, and perhaps try and change things in hopes of avoiding your own fate, and yet...

...

after a moment, he reaches out - slowly - to place a hand on Tadashi's shoulder, and squeeze lightly.]

...you're here now, for what it's worth.

at least, by Tadashi's perspective]

[He looks up at Callaghan after a moment and tries for a smile. He's not particularly successful, but the attempt is there.]

I guess I should be grateful...

[Better alive on an other-worldly turtle than dead at home, right? He doesn't have any memories of the fire, so why is this bothering him so much? Why can't he just carry on as normal like he want to?]

For what? By your point of view, it hasn't happened yet. And honestly, if there was a way to change things so it didn't...

[he gives the shoulder another squeeze, then drops his hand. but he still remains close, all told; looking in to Tadashi's eyes with some attempt at comfort, but also...a seriousness.]

...where I'm from, it's done with. There's nothing that can be done. But if there was a way I could warn you about that, you know I would.

And I would never have wanted you to come in after me in the first place. You know that, right?
