[OPEN BY APPOINTMENT.] And no storming the gates.

Characters: The Snakes and YOU
Date: Throughout the month of July; specific dates in subject headers, please!
Location: Mainly Yunxu's mansion in Central Sector, but potential for all over Keeliai; again, specific locations in subject headers, please!
Situation: A lot of the Foreigners have a bone to pick with Yunxu. (Or if they don't, they will very soon.) On top of that, Meisheng doesn't seem to be recovering from her illness, Jintou's gone missing, and the Snakes as a whole are actually leaving Foreigners well enough alone for the month unless a Foreigner approaches them first.
Warnings/Rating: None for now; will be updated as they apply.

[OOC: If your character has a bone to pick with Yunxu or is planning to approach Meisheng or any of the other Snakes, please contact me either by PMing this account or on plurk at [plurk.com profile] Amaraq. This is more for mod sanity than anything else, so don't be shy about requesting a thread!]

CLOSED to YUNXU; 9 JULY

He waited until it was the wee hours of the morning, when it was late enough that the night-goers were tired and before the early-risers awakened. It was the worst time of shift, when guards were sleepy and awareness relaxed, and even Yunxu, working in his office, didn't think anything would happen. Why would he? The manor was nearly a fortress.

That was when Heojin slipped in the office door and stood in the shadows lingering there, hiding the cut of the Snakes uniform he was wearing. "Hello, brother-in-law."

Yunxu certainly hadn't changed--at least not on the surface. Heojin had thought he might after some time actually being in power. Of course, when it came to Heojin, Yunxu had no reason to show any changes. Heojin had a decent understanding of people--but he had never understood how Yunxu, who knew him so little, could judge him so harshly and think he was in the right.

But that wasn't what Heojin was here for. Not for arguments, accusations, condemnations. He spread his hands. "Peace. The Bresilykians are gone, brother. We could not convince them we were worth their time. We spent too long vying against each other. Now the Chihuelans are approaching and they are far less tolerant. If we cannot present as a unified people to those with whom we have no quarrel, how can we expect to stand well against those who have already wronged us? I am here to see if you and I can put aside our differences."

Yunxu knew about the notes. Those words made Heojin tense, very slightly, but his expression didn't flicker--what of it Yunxu could see, at least. Was telling him so an oversight or a threat? Heojin couldn't afford to believe it was anything other than the latter.

But to him, or to the woman who was sending the notes for him--Valdis? Had Yunxu already made his move toward her, or would he as soon as Heojin had left? What purpose was there in telling him?

"I am claiming that I am willing to make an effort to change these things, if you are," said Heojin quietly, "but I am not going to do so blindly and without protecting myself. We both want our people free and prosperous. What are our differences when compared to that?" He raised his hands palms-up. "I have not been absent from the public, and I am here in your territory unarmed. What further measure of trust to you require?"

Heojin only smiled. "Sleeping. They looked tired. I did not want to cause them undue anxiety." And he was, after all, a cultivator of natural resources. It wasn't very difficult to find something to drop in tea that would help someone fall asleep. He had used it against the invaders. For all that the residents of Keeliai called him coward, Heojin had been the one to first infiltrate the Chihuelan camp to enable the stealing and sabotage of their supplies.

"I also did not want to take the risk that you felt you would need a further advantage on me." Given Heojin was in the manor, with guards all around, ensuring that the ones within the immediate vicinity wouldn't answer was only prudent.

"If you ask me questions," said Heojin, "I will answer, even if to tell you that I am not going to answer. Being dishonest and choosing to withhold a complete reply are not the same thing."

If Yunxu truly thought Heojin would answer anything and everything, he was mistaken. But to answr what he could--yes, that Heojin could do. "If I asked you a question, would you answer honestly?"

A 'test', Yunxu called it. Only a test because Yunxu wanted testing. Heojin didn't feel the need. It was more like a game, otherwise, because the 'test' wasn't mutual. Like him, to move forward as if he had the upper hand. Also like him, to answer a question about honesty with honesty, and have the answer be a denial.

"A question for a question," Heojin repeated evenly. "Ask."

"You ... do not know?" For the first time Heojin displayed some evidence of discomfort, chewing on his lip and shifting in place before realising he'd done so and stilling. "She refuses to tell me. I had--that might have been one of my questions to you."

Yes, Heojin did think they needed to overcome their petty differences for the sake of the city. But it would have been a lie to claim that he wasn't hoping to get some indication of what Meisheng was hiding from him. That was why Heojin had leapt so eagerly at the chance for the letter exchange--it had been his only opportunity to ask. But she'd refused to talk about it.

There wasn't actually much that Heojin wanted to ask. What was wrong with Meisheng had been his reason for this 'test' to begin with. So for some long minutes Heojin stood in the shadows, watching Yunxu.

Finally he said quietly: "You have always disliked me. Right from the day we met. Why?"

It was something he had never quite understood. Yunxu was many things, but he was intelligent. Most intelligent men didn't cling so to childish grudges, or judge so quickly and resolutely. So: why?

[personal profile] rawiron 2015-07-10 05:39 am (UTC)(link)
Something that Yunxu did not. What did that mean? Was he referring to Meisheng's affection, or the affection of someone special in general? Did this have to do with that childhood friend who had disappeared?

Did it matter? The answer revealed enough. Perhaps more than Yunxu had intended.

"For the sake of a childhood grudge, you cling to your dislike?" Heojin asked, and shook his head. "Perhaps you should look at what you have instead. Unless you already are." At what he could have in the future, at least. Heojin might have asked what that was, but he didn't. It wasn't his turn.

"Holding someone about whom you know nothing at bay is the very opposite of getting to know them," Heojin pointed out. This was the first time he and Yunxu had ever truly talked; the longest conversation they'd had that Heojin could remember. "If you knew me better, perhaps you would realise that I threaten less than you believe."

If anything, he was willing to add to it. True, he would be adding to it with himself, his family, his caste, but it still was an addition. He nodded. "I am. You care about our people. So do I. Our differences are nothing in comparison."

"Allowing me?" Heojin smiled faintly. He could escape unharmed without that offering, if he could so easily enter, and Yunxu was smart enough to guess at that. Of course he was; he all but confirmed that with what he said next. "There is strength in misdirection, brother. If you wish to speak with me further, you know how to contact me."

Meisheng may not know where Heojin was, most of the time--but Heojin was always aware of Meisheng. He bowed and stepped back toward the door without turning, and if Yunxu didn't stop him, he would exit and close the door behind him.

MEISHENG | July 7th?

[personal profile] akito 2015-07-06 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
It had been more than long enough since Akito had last spoken with Meisheng, childishly upset with her for doing what she informed him she would. Just as he had promised Meisheng he would inform her of any attacks made against his person, she had informed him she would be required to tell Yunxu. And Akito was fine with that until it meant a man who sought to live his life out peacefully ended up dead with another apparently tortured.

His blame should have been solely on Yunxu - if not himself - because it was his choice to hurt the Chihuelans, even if he made Meisheng announce it on his behalf. Yet instead he blamed her for something that, over time, Akito wonders if she even wanted to do.

He should have realized after she risked so much to contact him, offering him the chance to save Malcil, that she might have regretted it too. Still, the choices she gave him made it hard to think of it that way. All Akito could think was that he was being manipulated, because she knew him well enough to know just what to offer him. A chance to free what was essentially an innocent pawn in the larger scheme of things in exchange for the life of the rook.

It all makes his opinion of her waver. He doesn't know if keeping in touch with her would be dangerous or disadvantageous. Akito feels stupid for ever putting so much trust in her hands in the first place...

Still, she was a good confidante about other, less important things. A friend, of sorts. Maybe, sometimes, he wondered if the time spent with her was what it might have been like to have a mother.

But those are all stupid thoughts that will end up making him screw things up even more. So Akito shoves them all away to the back of his mind, behind chains and bars and just outside where the light can reach. Meisheng is a friendly acquaintance with good connections who he enjoys conversing with. That's all she is.

If asked, Akito will come up with a good reason why he would track down someone who is just a 'friendly acquaintance' with such a determined look mixed with worry. Every time he's caught a glimpse of her she's had the same features but has looked more... sick. If it was the zhyris she would have been better by now, or at least still quarantined if not.

Maybe it's something he could help fix with his healing?

Nobody asks him too many questions when he pauses for information on where Meisheng is at the moment, for which he's grateful. Running a delivery service does have its perks. Even so, it takes him the better part of three hours to track her down and, once he has, Akito isn't sure how to approach her after all this time.

Being faced with conversation, Akito realizes he hadn't really prepared for this - the talking to her part. He doesn't really know what to say, and so fidgets with his hands, taking the time to consider what to say.

"...I'm sorry I was so upset with you," he settles on, finally. "And I don't know what you're sick with, but I would like to help if there's anything I can do."

Which is part of why he wanted to see her in the first place. He holds out a small, neatly made byouki heyu omamori, with delicately stitched (and obviously handmade) embroidery.

"It's filled with wishes for good health and recovery. If you open it the wishes will go away..." He pauses, then continues. "Um... It's basically just a good luck amulet. They're popular where I'm from."

Being a Foreigner, he doesn't find it ungrateful - just a statement of fact. He didn't have to, which is why it's important. It's a gift with no strings attached, only good wishes.

"Just make sure to get better, ne? If you die then there won't be any more nice Snakes to talk to."
