[Midnight Hotel] February catch-all

Characters: Anyone, everyone.
Date: Month of February, 2016 (2017 in-game).
Location: The Midnight Hotel.
Situation: Catch-all post! Feel free to use this post for anything that happens within the Midnight Hotel during the month, using the subject header to label specific rooms or for specific people. See also the OOC note at the bottom.
Warnings/Rating: Mark your threads if content warnings become applicable, please!

This month the Hotel’s wards are back up to snuff, thanks to the fog being blown off. Notably, the main doors open into all sectors once more – which is a relief to anyone who made a habit of using the Hotel for a shortcut. As always, the windows and garage doors still only open into Central.

There’s a sizeable flow of traffic in and out, mostly due to visitors from Hatal and their curiosity. Apparently it’s gotten around that the Hotel is magical and a common location for Foreigners and odd things, and as a result there’s a bit of a ‘tourist’ feel in the Hotel this month. Foreigners may find themselves being treated as novelties and asked to do magic, even if they aren't magical. The igheeri seem mostly interested in critiquing the architecture (for which they are too tall) and the sinayg can be found trying to listen to the magic in the walls (the exact sound of which is apparently a subject of hot debate), while the muin just seem to want to immerse themselves in the ‘culture’.

About mid-month Anton will toss out and ban a group of five Jagaiz fighters, to the surprise of no one who’s seen them for more than five minutes. They’re all the sort which are good enough at fighting to think they’re the best even though none of them are champions; low-grade braggers and bullies, essentially. Other, politer Jagaiz fighters who visit, if asked, will confirm that their lot isn’t particularly well-liked and their means of gaining sponsorship is a bit suspect.

None of the five suffer more than a few broken bones (and a concussion), and the loss of a few cheap items they forfeited by being forcibly shown the door.

Otherwise, for the observant, much of the furniture has been ‘labelled’ with small English or Chinese engravings in unobtrusive places – courtesy of River. Visitors from Hatal apparently find this ‘culture’ of naming possessions ‘delightful’. In other news, there’s a new kedan by the name of Dardul permanently residing at the Hotel. He’s a bit vacant with obvious memory issues, and is liable to forget people who talk to him; he’s regularly visited by Milyn and is under the care of another permanent resident, Malcil, who seems to prefer not to talk much with strangers himself.

In other other news, Anton can be seen wearing a colourful party hat all day on the 7th of the month, with bonus party tooter in his jacket pocket which he will absolutely use to greet Erskine every time they talk (while wearing a very bland expression).

[ooc: The Midnight Hotel’s status page is available here, with the rules at the top and ongoing status at the bottom. PLEASE POST TO THE STATUS PAGE IF YOUR CHARACTER WOULD LIKE A ROOM, JOB OR AREA IN THE GARAGE, OR ARE MOVING OUT. Anton will manufacture means of payment until Foreigners are able to properly offer recompense or choose to move out.]

"It is good then that I don't need such things then," Yorda replied mildly. The smoke smelled as poisonous as the strange amber liquid the man was drinking. Was he human? Or did humans just regularly consume poisonous things? Yorda didn't know.

"Anton Shudder never said he liked to be called Grouch better though." He tone was a tad reproachful, and a tad uncertain.

Still, more of interest than the cigarette and booze and Anton's nickname, however, was the map.

"Is this the city?" She asked, barely able to keep the astonishment out of her voice. She was sure such things were normal for others, but she had never seen such a wonder.

"Good."

One problem solved. Wasn't like he had a lot of cigarettes for anyone to destroy in the first place. Leaning back in his chair, he took a deep drink and sighed as muscles he hadn't know he'd been keeping tense relaxed. Putting his feet up on the furniture in a way that would have the Authority around scowling, John watched her through the smoke.

"He loves it. Just afraid of everyone thinking him too familiar. Man's a marshmallow under all that. Secretly loves puppies and kittens. Heard that's what's in that locked room. Lots of those collector plates with those on them."

When her attention went to the map, John took the interruption as an opportunity to pour himself another drink. At this rate, he was going to end up pleasantly squiffed before long. Not a bad way to end the night.

"That it is. Been taking a few notes. Got the map from Zee's visitor's centre place."

He didn't find it too interesting yet. Hadn't been enough time to explore for that yet.

"Never seen a map? Been to the visitor place?"

"Maybe once. A piece." A forbidden thing, a sign there was a world beyond stone walls and iron bars that age and damp hadn't entirely claimed. "I do not know about the puppies or the kittens or the marshmallow -" Whatever those were. "-But Anton Shudder Grouch is kind." Not that she had much of a basis for comparison. Anyone who didn't put her in a cage was well ahead of things.

"This is wrong," she said, pointing to a part of the map. "There should be a path here." Her eyes narrowed as she pointed to another part of the map. "And here. I have walked these places. I have seen it."

Setting aside his drink and cigarette, John was quick to get to his feet with a pencil in hand.

"Show me again."

He sketched the path she had traced, little symbols marked next to them that read 'Tenative path' next to each one. Until he saw them in person, he wasn't inking it.

"Where do they lead to? Anywhere interesting?"

While his voice was still lazy as if they were discussing nothing of any consequence instead of knowledge Constantine wanted. Maybe needed.

"Where else, luv? See anywhere else things are different?" he asked. The map itself was the generic sort anyone could get at the Welcome Centre with only the most minor exploratory changes made by John. He waited with his next question, wanting to know why she had been there. Curiosity? Something near it? Or just an explorer? She did seem the sort that would look into something because it was there.

As instructed, she pointed to the spots on the map. "Here. And here."

She frowned at his question about the places leading anywhere interesting. It sounded like it had specific connotations she wasn't getting because frankly everywhere was interesting to her.

"One led to a ..." What was the word? "...Garden. There were flowers and colours I never knew. The other is a house but there was no one inside. There had been wood blocking the doors and windows but other children tore that down."

She hesitated a moment before launching into further explanation. She was a sort of nervous ball of energy - someone who wanted very badly to speak, but wasn't sure what would happen if she did. "I listened. They said someone had died there, though a shadow lingered. They used it to test their courage, but none would stay in for more than a little while. I stayed until dawn, but nothing was there. It is not like the shadows I sometimes feel in the city. Now I just go through there because it is easier than crossing the bridge."

She pointed again to a small area in the Wood District. "They put a bridge here also."
